The Bible of Early Electronic Organ Design
By CinemaPete
The Classic book on 60's Organ Design by Richard H. Dorf was a book that got me started on electronic organ design myself. I won't go into my own experieces with organ design, it would take a book of its own. But if you're an electronics buff interested in knowing what made electronic organs of the 50s, 60s, and into lat 70's tick, then this is the book you'll want to own - if you can find it. This is a 2nd copy I purchased. The book covers the basic concepts of electronic organ design as it existed back in the 50's through 70's. There's very detailed coverage of then popular organs, both for the home, and more serious use such as in churches. Actual schematics are included in many instances. Mr. Dorf covers the theory of tone generation as it existed back then and is a treatise in and of itself. He also covers his own brand which was the Schober organ which is now defunct. Mr. Dorf has passed on, but he lives on in his many instruments that exist in the many homes across America to this day. If you want to learn about organs and organ design you need to stand on the shoulders of those that came before and Mr. Dorf had mighty big shoulders. If you can get this book you will treasure it as I do.

This was an unexpected find - a book that spells out the design details of 60s era transistor-based church and theatre organs. A technical goldmine for anyone tinkering with these instruments.

The Forgotten Lands (Demon Lord Book 9), by T C Southwell

The Demon Lord has travelled far across the God Realm to free the Fallen Goddess, and now he faces his greatest challenge. The demon gods are a considerable nuisance on the voyage, and a new factor makes Bane even warier of pitfalls, but no one foresees the danger that waits. In order to free Kayos’ granddaughter, Ashynaria, Bane must avoid detection or risk a confrontation. Without her co-operation, however, the plan will go horribly wrong. The dark god Telvaron is ancient and wise, and poses a dire threat, as Kayos warned. Some of his worst fears are realised, and a few he failed to predict. Bane is betrayed and flung into the last place in the God Realm anyone would wish to go; a place the Grey Gods have tried to forget, without success, despite naming them the Forgotten Lands. Injured and crippled by the celestial metal, adamante, Bane is alone, save for Majelin, the only one able to follow him. To escape the dangers of the hostile and unpredictable region, they take what appears to be the only quick route out that may find help, but it brings them to the ancient, accursed city of Naskara, where even greater perils await.

Refreshing writing style.. Very much enjoy her work
By Miss O'Kelly
I love T. C. Southwell's writing.. I was captivated byher Queen's Blade series and decided to give this series a shot as well.. Loved it just as much.. hard to put down.. My only complaint is that this is NOT the last book.. I hate reading and reading and reading a massive set of books in a series only to find that I'm left hanging while waiting for the next one to come out. Had I known that this was not a completed series yet, I would have waited to start reading it. It's still an excellent read but I hate the wait.. Oh, and for future reference for Ms. Southwell.. In the front of your books in the 'table of contents' would you please start adding the chapters? so if I switch devices when my battery runs down on one and I know what chapter I'm on, I can quickly find it in the table of contents and 'go there' on my backup device.

The author is even more cynical than I am
By agent fluffy
I guess the paid reviews on Amazon and other sites are part of the game nowadays. This isn't one of them.

I'm a guy who's read a lot of evolutionary psychology, and I thought this was pretty good. The problem was that I already knew most of what was in the book, although most people probably don't. I was hoping for some kind of reconciliation and solution to the battle-of-the-sexes mentality, but the author is even more cynical than I am.

If you've read authors like David Buss, websites like bakadesuyo, and "manosphere" stuff like the red pill or roissy(heartiste), you are probably decently well-versed in the concepts this book proposes... Although this book has a more palatable tone, it still felt like reading the redpill subreddit, albeit with less fluff.

I would have liked more focus on what the porn industry taught him, because that is his unique selling point. The stuff about abused women being promiscuous could have used more citation and elaboration. A lot of the book seemed to be sort of anecdotal or inferred, which is still valid, but not ideal. However, I think evo-psych in general is plagued by over-reliance on surveys and difficulty of performing empirical research. I wouldn't have minded if the author had blatantly thrown in many more anecdotes, as long as he was clear that that's all they were.

I'm curious how the author intends to proceed with relationships now that he has written a book which blatantly and repeatedly tells men to cheat but lie about it. The fact that he would shoot himself in the foot by writing such a book makes me wonder whether he is more idealistic than he lets on. (Prioritizing honesty and the search for truth over his own reproductive success?)

Despite my criticisms, I enjoyed reading a book by a fellow evo-psych nut, who never censors himself for political correctness' sake. I find it hard to disagree with the main tenets of this book, although I wish I could, because my idealism comes into conflict with them; I like honesty.

Incredibly Self-serving Thoughts
By Patricia A. Maxwell
The author’s many years in the porn industry has undoubtedly fostered this deeply cynical approach to male-female relationships. In his view, all men immediately want intercourse with every attractive woman they see, and all women judge the men they meet by the size of their bank accounts. He feels a woman owes a man sex in return for the money spent courting her with restaurants outings, jewelry and flowers, and any waiting period before falling into his bed is for appraising his financial standing. If a woman doesn’t intend to “put out,” he maintains, then she should pay the restaurant tab! He discounts male-female chemistry or romantic love, equating marriage with the simple exchange of sexual access for monetary benefit – a legal form of prostitution, in other words. Adultery, in his view is to be expected as men are at the mercy of their hormones – a point he makes over and over again. A wife who gains weight or ages should expect her mate to stray –it’s her fault because men are naturally attracted to younger, svelte women instead of older, overweight ones. The secret to a successful marriage, then, is for a wife to turn a blind eye to her mate’s inevitable infidelity, neither questioning him about it nor investigating his suspicious activities. If their “happy” home is destroyed due to his straying, it’s not the fault of the husband but of the wife for making a big deal out it! Oh, but it’s also natural for a man to exchange his aging wife for a new, younger model, something she should apparently accept with humility and gratitude for any financial compensation. Yes, and it's normal, as well, for a husband to be murderously incensed if the neglected wife dares step out on him, calling into question the paternity of "his" children.

How many ways can this author be wrong? Let me count them. Or no, let’s just call BS on this rationalization for the actions of immature, egotistical males who are too weak to control their sexual impulses, and too cowardly and dishonorable to make any form of commitment, much less one to last a lifetime.

An interesting and candid perspective on the sexual behaviors of men and women.
By Todd Jenkins
This book takes an honest and often humorous approach in interpreting the sexual behaviors of men and women at various stages of life (dating, marriage, etc.). Many of the concepts presented in this book, which are obvious to me as a male, are actually quite foreign to women (such as the analogies of food and sex); conversely, some of the concepts that are so obvious to women were actually quite foreign to me (and, I assume, to most other men). People should read this book not to better understand their own behavior, which will seem obvious to them, but to understand the motivations and desires of the other gender, since what is obvious to them is clearly not so obvious to us. Highly recommended read!

An Introduction to Astronomy and Astrophysics, by Pankaj Jain

Astronomy is the field of science devoted to the study of astronomical objects, such as stars, galaxies, and nebulae. Astronomers have gathered a wealth of knowledge about the universe through hundreds of years of painstaking observations. These observations are interpreted by the use of physical and chemical laws familiar to mankind. These interpretations supply information about the nature of these astronomical objects, allowing for the deduction of their surface and interior conditions. The science associated with these interpretations is called astrophysics.

An Introduction to Astronomy and Astrophysics offers a comprehensive introduction to astronomy and astrophysics, complete with illustrative examples and illuminating homework problems. Requiring a familiarity with basic physics and mathematics, this undergraduate-level textbook:

  • Addresses key physics concepts relevant to stellar observations, including radiation, electromagnetic spectrum, photometry, continuous and discrete spectrum, and spectral lines

  • Describes instruments used for astronomical observations as well as how the radiation received is characterized and interpreted to determine the properties of stars

  • Examines the structure of stars, the basic equations which explain stars in equilibrium, and the fusion reactions occurring in stellar cores

  • Discusses the evolution of stars, the solar system, the dynamics of galaxies, and the fundamentals of modern cosmology

  • Explores the universe at high redshifts, where it is dominated by objects such as active galaxies

Solutions manual and figure slides available with qualifying course adoption

An Introduction to Astronomy and Astrophysics teaches students how to interpret the night sky, providing them with a critical understanding of the stars and other heavenly bodies.

so I’ve been super excited for this book for quite some time
By Mackenzie Carol
A Lady Unrivaled is the third book in Roseanna M. White’s Ladies of the Manor series, coming after The Lost Heiress and The Reluctant Duchess. I am a HUGE fan of Roseanna’s, and this series to be honest, so I’ve been super excited for this book for quite some time. I absolutely LOVED The Lost Heiress, and even though I hardly believed it possible, I loved The Reluctant Duchess even more, so I just knew I would love this novel as well. And I must confess, I most definitely wasn’t disappointed. I already loved both Lord Cayton and Lady Ella, so I knew it wouldn’t be hard to fall for their story, and I was right. If only this book had lasted longer!
Lady Ella Myerston is such a sweet, innocent, spitfire of a character, and I absolutely love everything about her. She is so set on keeping her brother and his wife safe that she completely disregards her own safety, and that is definitely something to admire. But my absolute favorite thing about her is actually not entirely just about her. My favorite thing is her relationship with Cayton. They are literally the cutest thing, and I couldn’t get enough of the two of them.
Lord James Cayton is completely and utterly wonderful. That’s all I can think to say. Even though I know he doesn’t have the best past, and is actually very hard on himself because of it, I can definitely see that he is redeeming himself, and I couldn’t help but love him and feel so much compassion for him as he struggled to finally forgive himself for all he had done. Plus, as I watched him fall in love with Ella, my heart was completely taken over, and if I wasn’t already sure of his perfection, I certainly was after that.
All in all, I absolutely loved every single aspect of this story, and I’m so sad that the series had to come to an end, but I know Roseanna is already working on a new series, so I’m super excited to see what that one will hold! Anyway, I cannot imagine giving this book anything other than all five bookshelves, because it already has a permanent place on my all-time favorites list. The themes that focus on God’s love and redemptive grace made this a story that touched my heart, and the drama and romance made it one I’ll never forget. And all that combined makes it a book I highly recommend.
I received a copy of this book from Roseanna and the publisher in exchange for only my honest review.

Excellent Series Ender
By Suzanne Waltner
Have you ever been in that place where you really want to read a book because you know it’s going to be wonderful while at the same time you really don’t want to because you don’t want it to end? That’s exactly who I felt as I read A Lady Unrivalved, the third and final installment in Roseanna M. White’s Ladies of the Manor series.

Readers met Lady Ella Myerston briefly in The Lost Heiress and got to know her more in The Reluctant Duchess. Now she gets her own story.

Loved. This. Book. The bubbly, optimistic personality of Ella perfectly offsets the negative, surly, taciturn (see how I got that Pride & Prejudice reference in there?) attitudes of Lord Cayton (who also made appearances in the previous books in this series).

Catching up with the Duke and Duchess of Stafford (Justin and Brook) was a treat, and Brice and Rowena (Duke and Duchess of Nottingham) also make an appearance.

The heart of this story is in the personal journeys of both Ella and Cayton. After Ella’s best friend went mad, she doesn’t trust her instincts. How could she not have noticed Stella losing her mind over Ella’s brother? And Cayton’s past traps him. Though he strives to become a better man, he is constantly concerned about returning to his old ways and he’s absolutely certain he’s not deserving of someone as good and pure as Lady Ella.

Through a scheme to rid both the Staffords and Nottinghams of the cure of the Fire Eyes (red diamonds from India), Ella and Cayton’s time together grows their attractions. While Ella’s determined to push past pretending, Cayton’s set on keeping both feet firmly planted in the faade.

This book is the perfect ending to the trilogy. The adventure of the Fire Eyes keeps the story moving along with intrigue while Cayton and Ella’s relationship grows around it. A beautifully written Edwardian series, the Ladies of the Manor now have a permanent home on my bookshelf.

***Bethany House Publishers and Roseanna M. White provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Superb ending to a superb series!
By Fiction Aficionado
Oh, how I have enjoyed this series! Roseanna White has captured the elegance of the Edwardian era beautifully in both her characters and the setting, and added a wonderful flavour of romance and suspense besides. I’m not sure what more a reader could ask for!

After reading the previous book in this series, the Duke of Nottingham became one of my favourite literary heroes ever (yes, right up there with Gilbert Blythe and Mr. Darcy!) but I now find myself thinking it must run in the family. Lady Ella Myerston positively sparkles in this novel – in a refined, English way, of course! – and I can’t help borrowing Jane Austen’s words about her own heroine, Elizabeth Bennet: “I must confess that I think her as delightful a character as ever appeared in print, and how I shall tolerate those who do not like her at least, I do not know.”

Lord Cayton, on the other hand, tries very hard not to sparkle - something that only encourages Lady Ella in her light-hearted banter! Now a widower and a single father, he has genuinely turned his back on the man he used to be, but his new faith is untested, and there is no way he is going to be responsible for Lady Ella being hurt, either physically or emotionally. In the hands of some authors, Lord Cayton’s attempts to be surly and disagreeable in Lady Ella's company could have been overdone and grating, but here they provided some of the most enjoyable scenes in the novel, not to mention one of my favourite ‘first kiss’ and ‘declaration of love’ scenes ever! The latter stopped my heart at one point, it was so beautiful!

As for the Fire Eyes, the intrigue in this novel is two-fold. Firstly we have the introduction of a third point of view character: Kira Belova, a Russian ballet dancer with the Ballet Russe in Paris who is recovering from an injury. She is the mistress of Andrei Varennikov – a wealthy Russian mogul living in Paris - who paid Lord Pratt a deposit for the Fire Eyes almost two years ago, but has yet to lay eyes on them. He wants what he paid for and has contrived to have Kira hired as a lady’s maid to Lady Pratt in order to learn their whereabouts. In fact, he gives her little choice. And so she becomes Sophie Lareau, a mere servant...

On the other side of the coin are Lady Pratt and her brother, Lord Rushworth. If they cannot follow through on Lord Pratt’s sale of the Fire Eyes, they have no doubt a different kind of payment will be extracted from them and Lord Rushworth wants Lord Cayton to use his friendship with the Duke of Stafford, and his charm on Lady Ella, in order to learn the whereabouts of the Fire Eyes...

This is a well-layered story with a delicious mixture of intrigue, danger, betrayal, love, grace, and second chances. Lady Catherine Pratt is also a recipient of Lady Ella’s determined friendship during the course of the novel, and of all the characters in this series, it is perhaps Lady Pratt who tugs most at my heartstrings. You need to have read from the beginning of the series to understand what a twisted journey she has been on, but just between you and me, I would love to see her get her own story – her own new beginning.

I feel like I could talk about this book all day, but then I would be stopping you from reading it. And you really should read it! The whole series! I can’t wait to see what’s next from Roseanna White.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

A definite must have for schools and families.
By Mr. Chad J. Mitchell
As I have said previously, I am a sales rep for a major book publisher so I see a lot of books. I am certainly not afraid to tell you when my company sends out what I call a stinker. On the otherhand if we publish one I really like, I do not have a problem telling a school or library that they have to have a book.

This is a book that they should all have. It will appeal to students on a social level. It is wonderful teaching tool for teachers and parents alike. It does a wonderful job of being consistent on the rhyming text. Plus, it is just a real great story with really great pictures.

I ultimately judge a children's book by how often my child pulls the book out of the bookcase for me to read, and I can truly say that this is a book my two year old grabs almost every night.

Revolutionary monkeys, UNITE!
By Jason Kirkfield
Echoing both Sombertown (from the stop motion classic Santa Claus Is Comin to Town) as well as Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927), Drabsville is a gray town filled with sad inhabitants.

Into this cold, unhappy world walks a suspiciously happy, guitar-playing, vest-wearing hippie named Chutney. Actually, much of the story follows the plot from First Blood. Like Rambo, Chutney finds an enemy of authority (the mayor, to Rambo's Sheriff Teasle) and is unfairly thrown into prison. The *seed* that Chutney illegally brings into Drabsville could easily be seen as allegorical marijuana. "Destroy that nasty weed!"

Upon his release, and with the mayor temporarily out of town, Chutney incites the masses. Surely another influence at this point was Reagan's "Tear down this wall!" speech. We see formerly morose chimps painting their homes pink(!) and turning the palace into a fruity playground. Nor is it a stretch to see the kiddie rocket ship as a decommissioned weapon of mass destruction.

Chutney soon has the entire town's population dancing in the streets. Everyone is eating copious quantities of food, no one is working anymore. Drabsville (now renamed Happytown, in the classic revolutionary tradition) has gone from dystopia to utopia.

Having successfully turned the guards against their master, Chutney has *him* thrown into jail. With the mayor under lock and key, Chutney completes the coup d'tat by assuming the mayoral post. He lets the former mayor out of jail but only to rub his nose in the new world order. Power to the people! Or at least to the chimpanzees.

This children's book packs some heavy messages into its colorful pages. For children conditioned to equating chimps with Curious George, they may not pick up on every facet of the story without parental assistance. How much you clue them in is up to you.

Tricky Territory
By Gary Carter
It is a tricky thing to try to teach kids that authority is not always right and sometimes you have to stand up to it. This book strikes a perfect balance, with the main character being punished for doing something beautiful and for the common good but technically against the rules. When he ultimately wins out (with the help of some young chimps), rather than punishing the person who jailed him, he teaches him the error of his ways. A very thoughtful book, but one that won't be over the heads of the intended audience.

The Career and Legend of Vasco da Gama, by Sanjay Subrahmanyam

Vasco da Gama (?1469-1524) is well known as one of a generation of discoverers, along with Magellan, Cabral, and Columbus. Yet little is known about his life, or about the context within which he 'discovered' the all-sea route to India in 1497-99. This book, based on a mass of published and unpublished sources in Portuguese and other languages, delineates Gama's career and social context, focusing on the delicate balance between 'career' and 'legend'. The book addresses broad questions of myth-building and nationalism, while never losing sight of Gama himself.

A brilliant revisionist view of the discovery discourse..
By Ina Baghdiantz McCabe
Subrahmanyam's book on Vasco de Gama opens like a powerful opera with a nineteenth century ouverture by Mayerbeeer on one of the heroes of European exploration. One instantly remembers Said's use of Aida to illustrate his point about culture and imperialism, also at the heart of this book . It is a theoretically sophisticated book informed by Foucault and Said, who nevertheless are never in the foreground to cloud the real issues. There is no jargon to spoil the sophistication, yet the discourse about de Gama is slowly deconstructed as it unfolds as a biography, a portrait, a eulogy , an opera and a heroic journey. It is no longer a European view of de Gama, but a more global one, where Middle Eastern and Indian merchants long absent on the pages written in Europe play their role, at long last. Itlooks at the Portuguese arrival in India as a real historical event as opposed to leaving it a hymn to exploration and European imperialism. The book examines the construction of the Portuguese heroic myth of de Gama often represented as a Christ like figure, followed by 12 apostles, a Christian hero who has left holy relics. It might infuriate some readers, but it will inform many others about a major chapter of history which has remained, as the book title suggests a legend. A tour de force, and a must read for serious historians. The best book I have read in a long time, and a real pleasure to read.

Well researched and cited study of Gama's career; somewhat lacking in narrative storytelling
By Matthew NYC
Vasco da Gama is one of the great heros of the Portuguese Age of Exploration. This book is a well written and very thorough look at his career and exploits, particularily the impact of political maneuvering within the Portuguese nobility at the time. The author has translated and cited many historic Portuguese writings.

As with many modern histories, the myth and legend are taken down a notch, and da Gama the man - warts and all - is revealed. Nonetheless da Gama is all the more interesting as a flawed human character.

My only disappointment with the book is that the author seemed to have missed an opportunity to delve more deeply into the storytelling aspect of da Gama's voyages, especially his first journey to India. The account of the voyages at times seem rather dry, lacking a narrative voice to pull the reader in and recreate what it must have been like as the Portuguese encountered various civilizations for the first time. But it was only because the author does such a thorough job of detailing the events of the voyages that I was left wanting to hear a bit more ...

All in all a very well researched and documented study of da Gama, which has served as a good starting point for learning more about this fascinating character.

An eye-opener
By Rajeev Rajagopalan
In times wherein we debate kinks and spikes in a flat world, the relevance of the great explorers of the 15th century in contributing to this phase is a moot point. What could lend a boost to any of these debates is this great book on one of the explorers viz. Vasco Da Gama by Sanjay Subrahmanyam. The book is infinitely detailed, sometimes tiresomely so but to a patient reader the facts form a coherent pattern in a tapestry checkered by messianic zeal and greed.

Vasco Da Gama came from a reasonably humble beginning, born to a family of noblemen of an average standing. Though current history and the significance of events have allowed poets and artists to use broad strokes to paint him as an intrepid adventurer, this can only be a partial truth. Vasco Da Gama was a creation of the times albeit a smart and brave one.
15th century Portugal displays an enormous amount of politicking. The power of the royalty is undermined or augmented based on the support of military orders which are leftovers of the crusades, notably one of them viz. The Order of Christ largely being a makeover of the Templars who may have found refuge in Portugal. The king Dom Joao 2 , under severe competitive pressure from neighboring Spain which could boast of greater maritime success (both financially and nominally), discovers an excellent device for his ambitions in Vasco Da Gama who is entrusted with the voyage to India. The purpose being twofold - undermine the power of the Moors who till now have dominated the spice trade, and sound the death knell on Islam by allying with the mythical Prestor John who controls an large army of willing Christians.
May 1498 sees Vasco Da Gama sighting land in Kerala, and the first Portuguese land in India. The spice trade is portrayed to be fairly open controlled largely by the Samudri Zamorin of Calicut. What follows is a tale of greed and power-play with the Portuguese based on their sheer might on the seas being able to control a large share of the spice trade. Religious zeal takes a back-seat to sheer greed and though the spice trade is largely won its at a fairly large cost to the locals. Vasco goes back to a sinecure under a new king Dom Manuel and over a period of time with political upheaval taking a toll on his image and standing, he is "convinced" to become the viceroy of India where he finally is put to rest.
So the questions linger, was the discovery of the sea route to India an enabler for a more global society? From a western perspective, maybe yes, but for the largely peaceful trade routes that existed in the Indian ocean the dark ages had just begun
