What a treasure!

This reprint of a 1904 survey of Impressionist artists is a treasure and I thank whoever at Amazon made the decision to reprint it! Written by an English art student studying in Paris at the turn of the last century, readers are introduced to the forces -- political and social -- which led to the birth of the Impressionist movement, and then -- one by one -- to the major players in that movement.

The author, Wynford Dewhurst, is himself an artist, and though he is rather modest about it, he personally met and studied under several Impressionist artists. As an artist himself, the author knows first-hand the problems faced by the Impressionists, their rejection by the art community at that time, and their ultimate triumph over the staid and stuffy Classicism that ruled. In sometimes quaint, and always poetic language, he describes how "By avoiding artificially darkened studios they were able to study the problems of light with an actuality impossible under a glass roof. They were, in fact, children of the sun, and through its worship, they evolved an entirely new school ... and [he] is never happier than when attempting to fix upon his canvas some beautiful effect of sunshine, some exquisite gradation of atmosphere."

Dewhurst was most influenced by Monet, and his comments on Monet's serial work is particularly beautiful -- "Les Cathedrales" (the Rouen cathedral); "Les Meules" (the haystacks); "Les Peupliers" (the poplars); and of course the "Water Lilies" (indeed, all the Giverny paintings) are described in his typical poetic style. The Haystacks, for example: There are 20 canvases of two haystacks in a neighbor's field -- "the fruits of a year's labor -- ...the artist watched and painted the haystacks in the making, followed and noted the atmospheric effects upon them at every different hour of the day, at every changing season. He portrays them covered with the pearls of dew, baked by the sun, lost in the fog, rimed with early frosts, and covered in snow. Each picture is a masterpiece of beauty, truth and form."

Unfortunately, the beautiful color photographs given to the author for reproduction are poorly reproduced in black-and-white photos in this reprint. Some of them, of course, are available on-line. However, the author states that even with original photos, "little idea can be gathered of the extreme beauty of the originals. The colour and technique of Impressionist pictures seem unfortunately to be insuperable barriers to their reproduction in monochrome."

This is a most enlightening book on the history of Impressionist Painting! Wynford Dewhurst presents an important argument regarding the "genesis" and inspiration of Impressionist painting. The French will not agree but Dewhurst links the first impressionist paintings to British painter J.M.W. Turner. This is a must read for art history buffs.

About the Author
Thomas L. Friedman has won the Pulitzer Prize three times for his work at The New York Times, where he serves as the foreign affairs columnist. He is the author of three previous books, all of them bestsellers: From Beirut to Jerusalem, winner of the National Book Award for nonfiction; The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization; and Longitudes and Attitudes: Exploring the World After September 11. In 2005 The World Is Flat was given the first Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award, and Friedman was named one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report. He lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with his family.

The Book is Flat

The content of the book (the quotes occupy one third of the content!) can be summarized in a few sentences. 1) Computer technologies, automation, and especially the Internet have opened up new opportunities for everyone. We can be rich, we can work together. 2) Free trade and capitalism is the best solution to all the problems of the world. 3) America needs a better system of education. And that's it.

The World is Flat seethes from the excess of demagogy, which makes the author a great candidate for a politician. The content of the book is painfully outdated. Author instead focus on the mechanisms that shape the beginning of the twenty-first century, persistently presents case studies.

Conclusion; if someone wants to scramble through for more than 600 pages to find some valuable comments and bon mots, then I wish you good luck and a lot of patience.

The world is getting smaller

“Yes, the consumer in us wants Wal-Mart prices, with all the fat gone. But the employee in us wants a little fat left on the bone, the way Costco does it, so that it can offer health care to almost all its employee, rather than just less than half of them, as Wal-Mart does. But the shareholder in us wants Wal-Mart’s profit margins, not Costco’s. Yet the citizen in us wants Costco’s benefits, rather than Wal-Mart’s, because the different ultimately may have to be paid for by society.”

The world has changed and it continues to change and not in the notable, transforming ways history has seen before. Governments are not being toppled. Political revolutions are not exploding. But the power is shifting, it is shifting the people.
With the rapid rise of consumer technology, more people are connected than ever before. The world has become much smaller, or as Thomas L. Friedman says, “The world is flat.”

Consumers do not have to rely on the restricted knowledge of real estate agents to find the perfect home, as countless internet sites can show you the entire market. No longer do we have to drive from car lot to car lot to find a great deal on a used car. And no longer do you have to throw on a suit and walk up and down an office building looking for a job. The information has come to the people and the people have changed the game.

Now small companies with little or no capital can become a global player over night. Established companies have learned to adapt and quickly.

The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman is a very interesting read on the changing times. The latest edition of this book was written in 2007, right before the start of the great recession, so it would be interesting to see if Friedman’s thoughts were changed by this major market malfunction.

This book is good but a little long. Friedman includes a lot of interviews and anecdotes, however his stories do not have the power or sharpness of Malcolm Gladwell or the Freakonomics authors.

If you are an isolationist then don't buy this book.

I haven't even finished the book yet and i'm already regretting not having come across it sooner. This is something that should be required reading in high school, at the least. The book is well written, and the story flows in a nice way (so far at least) that keeps the reader interested. Unless you are some backwards Luddite then I would almost be willing to guarantee that this book will help you to understand the world as it is evolving to be, quite aside from how many people may have seen it coming, or even wanted it to be.

Excellent Project Management resource for heavy engineering and construction projects

There are multitudes of books on project management but they are very general and not specific to engineering or heavy construction projects. This book is directed at complex engineering projects. It would definitely a good introduction to project management for engineering students and I recommend it for project management professionals early in their careers. The material is also suitable for sharing portions with non-project managers such as commercial and operations to better understand the challenges and role of project managers better. The book covers the full range of project management for engineering projects from initiation, early estimating, budgeting, work breakdown, scheduling, construction, risk management, and close out. It also covers soft project management skills related to project teams and personal management.

About the Author
Christine Jaszay, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor and Director of Isbell Hospitality Ethics at the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at Northern Arizona University. She has two graduate degrees with minors in instructional design from Purdue University. She has 16 years university teaching experience and 15 years hospitality industry experience.

Paul Dunk is a freelance writer and author of over eighty short stories, three novellas, and two novels. His most recent book is a collection of short stories called, AStraight Up, A which can be ordered on-line @ www.xlibris.com. He has over fifteen yearsA hospitality industry experience and won the 4th grade perfect attendance award at Gary School in West Chicago. I am happy with my purchase but not with Amazon

I am happy with my purchase, the high quality of the used books and the prompt arrival orders. But I would warn you to be very careful when making your purchases on Amazon. I still do not know what I did wrong, but I ended up ordering some books twice. I desperately tried to stop the shipment, but Amazon does not list a phone number and the online cancelation was in a loop that did not work! Because the shipment ultimatelly ended up in Kingston, Jamaica the cost to return the double ordered books is more than the cost of the books. So I am now left with three books I had NO INTENTION of ordering nor any use for and I can not find a buyer here in Jamaica. I am going to be VERY angry when my credit card bill arrives.

I was very pleased with the price of the book and how quickly it got to my home after ordering. If I remember correctly, it was about a week after ordering that the book was in my mailbox. It was a great relief to know it was here before my next quarter.
