Harvard cognitive psychologist Kagan adds a new twist to the nature-nurture controversy in this challenging academic study. Second-century Greek physician Galen posited innate, distinct human temperaments--melancholy, sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic--thought to result from imbalances in bodily humors. Carl Jung carried forward Galen's ideas by asserting that people are born as introverts or extroverts. Though the concept of inherited personality has fallen out of favor, research studies done during the last 15 years by Kagan and others reveal that an infant's fearful or relaxed reaction to novel stimuli is a predictor of whether that child will develop into a sensitive, introverted or a bold, outgoing adult. Kagan believes we each inherit unique neurochemistries that predispose us to becoming inhibited or uninhibited types. He offers tantalizing speculations on how innate temperaments might affect vocational and marital choices, criminality, ethical stances, psychopathology and parenting.

Kagan, one of the world's eminent developmental psychologists, has argued for several decades that human nature is not infinitely malleable. In this book he discusses a project he has led for the past 15 years involving the study of toddlers who demonstrated two temperamental extremes: the inhibited (shy and withdrawn) and the uninhibited (placid and outgoing). Kagan's research uncovered a significant pattern of behavioral and physiological differences distinguishing these two groups from earliest infancy and found that these traits tend to persist at least into early adolescence. He includes a history of the idea of temperament and discusses the political implications of his work. This book is a vital purchase for all academic libraries supporting courses in developmental or personality psychology. Public libraries can probably make do with Kagan's earlier book, The Nature of the Child (LJ 9/15/84), which covers the research in less detail.

A perceptive look at changing ideas about temperament, plus some strong opinions about the implications of current concepts. A research-oriented psychologist, Kagan (Harvard; Unstable Ideas, 1989) begins with the view of Galen, a second-century physician, that temperament is linked to an excess of one of the four bodily humors--black bile, blood, yellow bile, and phlegm. That temperament had a biological basis was a popular concept until the end of the 19th century, when it came into conflict with the egalitarian notion that all human beings are equipped with essentially similar psychological qualities. In the second half of the 20th century, research with young children led to new ideas about the influence of biology on temperament. Kagan looks at some of this research and questions its reliance on parents' responses to questions about their children's emotions and behaviors. He describes in considerable detail his own 15 years of research into the physiology of inhibited and uninhibited children: In studying hundreds of children, he found that two- thirds of infants who at four months were highly reactive to various auditory, visual, and olfactory stimuli developed into shy, timid toddlers, and two-thirds of minimally reactive infants became sociable and outgoing. In his final chapters, Kagan ponders the implications of his findings, arguing strongly that the existence of inborn temperamental biases does not excuse asocial behavior. Free will, he insists, is not undermined by temperament, and though we may not be able to control our emotions, we can control our actions. Temperament is real.

For we folks who feel that we are born "a blank slate", that our ability to live is mainly learned from our environment, Kagan will show how wrong we are. The inborn genetic influence with which we enter this world determines how we act, think, work, and relate to others throughout our lives, despite current thinking that training and experience from birth are all important.

Good News for Introverts

Galen's Prophecy was a stretch for my intellect; it is, afterall, a presentation of scientific research. However, when it was written (early to mid-1990's), it was cutting-edge research in temperament. At the time, I was desperate for answers about the agonies of anxiety and shyness that colored my childhood and followed me into adulthood. It was personally liberating to read Kagan's solid evidence that we are born with our temperamental tendencies. In our culture, where extroversion is desired and rewarded, it's easy for we introverts to feel inadequate or flawed. Kagan's research has paved the way for newer books on shyness and tempereament written for the lay person. Extroverts may never understand the debt of gratitude we introverts owe to Dr. Kagan.

Just like the Irish

I laughed, I cried, I covered my ears. This is such a classic piece of Irish-ness! The storyline is fanciful (unless YOU regularly have Hollywood crews arrive in your little town) but the underlying truths are not. When we saw this play performed in London, two actors played all the parts, which just added to the poignancy and hilarity. Drunks, dreamers and the depressed are all part of the Irish national psyche, and "Stones" hits on all these. This little gem of a story deserves wider acclaim.

This is a wonderful play, but unless you have a prodigious imagination, reading it won't be nearly as enjoyable as seeing it performed. 'Tis no small feat to move this one from the page to the stage.

Plenty of laughs to earn the "comedy" label, but it wouldn't be Oirish if it was nothing but funny.

The Only Game in Town

If you are searching for something to help you understand the world of curriculum development in vocational technical education, there is really no other choice than Crunkilton and Finch's fifth edition. These authors have defined the field for over twenty years.

Curriculum development is really different in vocational technical education. The instructional delivery method often requires that substantial time expires between introducing a topic and completing its study. It may require four years before a student is fully competent in preparing dinner entrees or troubleshooting an internal combustion engine. Classroom settings are simply one of a number of different ways that career and technical educators get their points across. Hence, curriculum planning is vital in the field.

Crunkilton and Finch explore the CTE Curriculum in four sections: perspective, planning, defining content, and implementing. Sections are well thought out and explained. There are areas of weakness, owing to the publication date. As an example, such topics as national program standards and 'all aspects of the industry' are either not mentioned or given transitory treatments since they were emerging issues in the late nineties.

In summary, Curriculum Development in Vocational and Technical Education does the basics of curriculum planning very well. Like all books, its value is diminished somewhat by time, but application of additional timely references can overcome that shortcoming. I recommend it highly.

Of all the curriculum books I have used and examined this is by far the best book out there. In discussions with vocational educators around the world, I have found this book to be one of the most highly regarded informational sources on curriculum development. A great resource tool for all educators, a must have for vocational educators.

I have taken several classes on curriculum development of my 12 years of teaching, but none of them, till now, used this book. This book provides a large quantity of information in a compressed amount of space. This book is very useful for amateurs and experts, alike. It steers you in the right direction to be able to great high quality, efficient, and useful curriculum. This book doesn't beat around the bush, it gets right to the point.

I would recommend this book to anyone attempting to write or rewrite curriculum.

Sometimes referred to as the Battle of White Oak Swamp, Charles City, New Market Crossroads, Nelson's or Frayser's Farm (about 200 acres) or Turkey Bend, the Battle of Glendale was one of the Seven Days' Battles of the Peninsular Campaign. After the Battle of Savage Station, McClellan's Army of the Potomac withdrew the night of 29-30 June 1862 in heavy rain.

Lee had opened his first offensive as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia on 26 June 1862, and in a series of bloody, confused, and mismanaged engagements, the Confederates had driven McClellan's Army of the Potomac nearly 15 miles from the Chickahominy River. It now concentrated behind White Oak Swamp and on a line through Malvern Hill to block Lee's pursuit while his supply trains continued their movement to Harrison's Landing.

Lee now sought to crush McClellan's army before it reached the safety of Union gunboats and a new supply base on the James River. Lee ordered Major Generals James Longstreet, A.P. Hill, John Magruder, Benjamin Huger, and Thomas J."Stonewall" Jackson to attack the Army of the Potomac near Glendale. By attacking the front, flank, and rear simultaneously, Lee's plan was to overwhelm the jammed Union forces at the junction of the Charles City Road, Long Bridge Road, and Quaker Road (also referred to as the Willis Church Road).

McClellan's retreat had bottlenecked at the crossroads as his wagons and equipment slowed the movement to the James River. Nearly half of McClellan's army was trapped on this side by the Confederate forces, with the Quaker Road as the only avenue of escape. If Lee's Army of Northern Virginia could reach the road before the wagons could be cleared, McClellan's Army of the Potomac would face a devastating loss of both men and materials. McClellan would spend the afternoon telegraphing the War Department about his situation while he left tactical operations of the battle to his generals in the field. But as happened before, Lee's ambitious plans misfired and the South lost one of the few opportunities to destroy Union forces.

The Confederates suffered 3,673 casualties, while the battle cost McClellan's army 3,797 men; 1,800 of whom were reported missing. Though the Army of Northern Virginia had nearly 55,000 troops within striking distance of the Union contingent of approximately equal strength, it sent only 18,000 men into the fight. The battle was a victory for Lee in only the most technical sense. This most recent failure to entrap and crush the Army of the Potomac was fresh on Lee's mind the next morning. When one of his officers commented that McClellan might escape, Lee snapped in uncharacteristic anger, "Yes, he will get away because I can't have my orders carried out!" Though Lee failed in his attempt to destroy McClellan's army at Glendale, he succeeded in driving the Union forces even farther from the gates of Richmond.

His detailed research gives the reader an excellant account of the mistakes committed and the personalities involved in the Confederacy's lost opportunity. Stempel's book deserves a place on the library shelf of any serious student of The War Between The States.

Well written, well argued, and entertaining to read

Jim Stempel's book on the 1862 Battle of Glendale is a short, pleasant read with just a few footnotes - well written, well argued, and entertaining to read. It is not definitive, but it isn't intended to be. It is not a micro-tactical history, rather it provides an operational view with great analysis of what went wrong for both sides, but especially for the Confederates. Maps are adequate, which is a rarity in books now. Because of the maps and the clear descriptions, it is easy to understand what is going on. The author goes back to the beginnings of the Peninsula Campaign to give proper background, but the earlier actions of the Seven Days Campaign could have gotten more attention to give the reader better perspective. In the book, as in reality, McClellan comes off looking bad, as he should. In contrast, the author thinks highly of Philip Kearny, and he makes a convincing case for his abilities. The Battle of Glendale, Stempel argues, could have led to Confederate independence, but poor execution of a good plan prevented decisive victory. Jackson, Huger, Magruder, and others are partly to blame, but Lee himself was also at fault. The author also questions Lee's command philosophy. The operation was so bungled that there might not have been a battle at all except for a local attack that escalated. Essentially the battle was an accident after a good plan failed to come together. Although the author doesn't state it as such, the problems were essentially staff issues, and these issues were never completely resolved during the war. The history of Civil War command often seems like a litany of ineptitude, and "The Battle of Glendale" is an excellent example of this - the Confederates wasted their best chance to win the war.

Unbelievably unprofessional

I can not believe, based on how much I needed to spend on this book, that many of the definitions cited in the chapters are from wikipedia. Wikipedia! I can't name a single professor who would accept that on a paper, but somehow, that's perfectly acceptable in the textbook publishing world. And some of the sources aren't even cited at all! And don't get me started on the perspective bias that is in there. One incident of a man who murdered five people was insinuated to be due to a miscommunication/bad persuasion issue, but when I found information outside of the book on the incident, there was no such causation mentioned...and the author had the death count off.

Bottom-line is, although there is certainly useful information in here, but the book is constructed rather poorly, and based upon that alone, it's incredibly hard to trust the text. Certainly not worth the money spent.

Complete waste of time...

The author is so very opinionated about politics that reading it is difficult. In addition the entire book is mostly on how to be a good listener, what to listen for, etc. Only the last few chapters have any reference to how to persuade people and it's very unremarkable information. Suggested my university drop this book from their line-up.

Where is the editor?

This book is, as stated in another review, incredibly unprofessional. If I were to present this book as my written work to one of my English professors, they would laugh me off campus for making a claim founded in Wikipedia and then supporting it with more Wikipedia articles. This is not to mention the grammatical and syntax disasters throughout the book. On page 9, the author defines advocacy according to Wikipedia and then says, "Propaganda is a related word that we hear quite often." Who is 'we'? Then, he grounds that claim in Wikipedia! On the same page, he makes reference to two movies that I have never heard of and cites them without documentation telling me how I can find them to ground his argument. Someone clearly needs an APA style manual!

I think that when discussing technology in this book, since it is the 12th edition, they could have cut out 90% of technological media definitions. I feel like he is undermining the reader in telling what these devices are used for.

The style of writing in this text is relatively elementary. The author is constantly opening sections of the texts by telling us what the previous section discussed and what we are going to learn in another chapter.

The author slaps us in the face on page 17 by writing a paragraph beginning, " College students today are urged to take more core subjects and courses in computer technology." He then ends that same paragraph with, " Students are urged to take more core subjects and courses in computer technology at college." For a published text with several editions and editors, I am greatly disappointed in the redundancy and lack of argumentative support for claims.

In chapter 6, the author discuses syntax, adverbs and sentence structure. I feel greatly let down as an English major. You cant discuss half of English sentence structure and then throw in only the parts you feel like, unless you want to confuse someone. But if the person reading the text were smart enough to figure out this chapter, then they feel offended by the repetition throughout the book.

About the Author
Gerald Corey is Professor Emeritus of Human Services and Counseling at California State University at Fullerton. He received his doctorate in counseling from the University of Southern California. He is a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology; a licensed psychologist; and a National Certified Counselor. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 17, Counseling Psychology; and Division 49, Group Psychotherapy); a Fellow of the American Counseling Association; and a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Both Jerry and Marianne Corey received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011, and both also received the Eminent Career Award from ASGW in 2001. Dr. Corey was given the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from California State University at Fullerton in 1991. He regularly teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in group counseling and ethics in counseling. He is the author or coauthor of 15 textbooks in counseling currently in print, along with more than 60 journal articles and book chapters. In the past 40 years Jerry and Marianne Corey have conducted group counseling training workshops for mental health professionals at many universities in the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England, and Ireland.

I've read a couple of Group counseling textbooks and this is my favorite. I was upset with the price but Corey's writing is excellent, his in depth explanation of the different modalities was perfect and I especially appreciated the examples included. This will stay on my reference bookshelf for future use.

great group work book

Bought this for a course in my MSW program. I enjoyed the class and we really used the book from front to back. This book has a lot of usuful information if you are looking to start running groups or working with clients in your practicum. I plan on keeping this text and not selling it back because of all the information that you can gain from this book. Im glad that I took the course because of this book!.

My book arrived with the cover ripped clean off of the book. I'm astounded that I was charged over $40 for a book that's in such abysmal shape. I seriously hope the seller see this and does something to make it correct.

Great design book

A quality book from Fine Woodworking. There are a range of really nice designs and projects in this book. The instructions are not completely thorough, so this book is probably not for the beginner, you definitely need a certain amount of knowledge to complete the projects as described, but combined with other woodworking books, this is a great addition to my collection.
