Crossing the River (Fireside (New Leaf/JZK)), by Ramtha

When we become aware that we are God, we see life differently. For the most of you, you struggle in a raging river of humanity. You are still caught up with the snags of your past. You are caught up with the wounds of your bodies, your neuronets. You are trying to make a crossing, but you are so afraid of being hurt that you hold back, or that you are going to miss something else. So you are caught up on the snags of crossing this river.? When we don't know that we are God, there is one thing we do know, that we are human beings. And that knowingness is so common that we have yet to have a startling realization that when we know that that is what we are, then is it any wonder then that we are part of the snags of life that tear at the flesh, that hook upon it, that we are a part of a life that is so encumbered by the flesh that we are afraid to cross the river? - Ramtha

Interesting, but the author omits most of the "how to" aspects
By Brian
First, the Amazon website description does not inform you what is contained in the "Forward" of the book. And that is, the author and publisher have assumed that you have attended a retreat or workshop at the Ramtha/Knight school or that you are at least familiar with the book Ramtha: A Beginner's Guide to Creating Reality (3rd Edition).

I bought 9 of these little Ramtha "fireside" books and will try to post a review of all of them as I read them, so you can click on the link for my other reviews. I'm reviewing the 2006 Revised edition of Crossing the River, which is about three pages shorter than the original version.

Ramtha states that a person who finds lessons in nature becomes a lover of nature and they become in union with nature. They are a master in the making and can cross the river and can walk on water because they are the water and can command the water to be still and become a bridge.

Ramtha states on page 34, "I taught you how to do the miraculous" and also, if you had heard everything that I have taught and applied yourself, then you will have a crossing. However, when Ramtha says "I taught you how to do the miraculous," he does not mean that he taught it in this book--or any of his other books. He also refers to the "Great Work" (the application of knowledge by which the person becomes enlightened and is transmuted into an immortal, divine being) and the "analogical mind" (the alignment of the primary and secondary consciousnesses, the "observer" and the personality along with the opening of the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th seals). None of these concepts are taught in this book. There is no chapter on how to actually "cross the river."

The book does have a few suggestions on things to work on, like purity of spirit, being honest, maintaining focus, and cleaning the soul and the mind. There is much said of how not to cross the river. Keeping your mind in the past, thinking about the things that went wrong or right, the resentment, expectations, victimization, and the games you play etc. are all ways to keep one foot on the shore so that you will never cross the river and you will continue to manifest the same life you've had before.

After reading this book and Ramtha's Beginner's Guide to Creating Reality, I learned that the actual techniques for how to be create your own reality are only taught in the Ramtha/Knight workshops. So one could say that buying this book is similar to attending a free lecture given prior to workshop in which the concepts are introduced, but you have to pay for the workshop if you actually want learn the techniques.

Other thoughts: Ramtha states (on page 36) that reality begins in the mind, not in the physical, and also references instantaneous manifestation (page 46). There are other books that share this type of quantum physics outlook, such as the Matrix Energetics book by Richard Bartlett. Ramtha talks about being totally present in the moment, and there are other books on this topic such as the books by Eckhart Tolle (e.g The Power of Now and The New Earth).

The Power of Living in the Now
By Laura De Giorgio
Each book in the Ramtha's Fireside Collection revolves around one central topic. The topic of this book deals with the importance of living in the now and the fact that one won't be going spiritually anywhere fast without willingness to let go of the past and be fully present in the moment.

The book deals with some truths that are presented at much greater length in A Course in Miracles - as the entire training manual from A Course in Miracles guides the person through the process of realizing that his mind is preoccupied with past thoughts, helping the person to let go of them and live fully in the present.

Holding onto the past, emotionally, keeps the individual's energy locked in the past and prevents the individual from accomplishing effortlessly many wonderful things which the individual could accomplish in the present moment.

A simple act of forgiveness and just letting go of whatever has happened in the past has helped numerous individuals experience instant healings.

Any conflict that anyone can ever experience is based upon dragging something from the past into the present moment - upon

comparing and judging, instead of just being fully present in the moment.

By living in the present one moves into a timeless zone - his entire energy available to flow freely to create desired reality now, without any obstructions - affording the individual to experience in the outer world even instant manifestations. One moment you think a thought, the next moment it is manifested in your outer experience.

That's why some people, like Jung, would say that you know you are moving forward along your spiritual path when you are experiencing increased number of synchronicities. Synchronicities are simply instant manifestation of one's thoughts which are possible because the individual has become a "clear" channel and is free of any obstructions and encumbrances from the past.

There is yet another wonderful side-effect of being fully present in the moment - as anyone who has wholeheartedly worked with A Course in Miracles can attest to - you begin to feel more vibrantly alive than you ever felt before, you also begin to experience boundless joy, happiness and power.

Private Guns, Public Health, by David Hemenway

"In this small book David Hemenway has produced a masterwork. He has dissected the various aspects of the gun violence epidemic in the United States into its component parts and considered them separately. He has produced a scientifically based analysis of the data and indeed the microdata of the over 30,000 deaths and 75,000 injuries which occur each year. Consideration and adoption of the policy lessons he recommends would strengthen the Constitutional protections that all of our citizens have to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
-Richard F. Corlin, Past President, American Medical Association

"This lucid and penetrating study is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the tragedy of gun violence in America and-even more important-what we can do to stop it. David Hemenway cuts through the cant and rhetoric in a way that no fair-minded person can dismiss, and no sane society can afford to ignore."
-Richard North Patterson, novelist

"The rate of gun-related homicide, suicide, and accidental injury has reached epidemic proportions in American society. Diagnosing and treating the gun violence epidemic demands the development of public health solutions in conjunction with legislative and law enforcement strategies."
-Kweisi Mfume, President and CEO of NAACP

"In scholarly, sober analytic assessments, including rigorous critiques of NRA-popularized pseudoscience, David Hemenway constructs a convincing case that firearm availability is a critical and proximal cause of unparalleled carnage. By formulating such violence as a public health issue, he proposes workable policies analogous to ones that reduced injuries from tobacco, alcohol, and automobiles."
-Jerome P. Kassirer, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, New England Journal of Medicine, and Distinguished Professor, Tufts University School of Medicine

"As a former District Attorney and Attorney General, I know the urgency of providing safe homes, schools and neighborhoods for all. This remarkable tour-de-force is a powerful study of one promising solution: a data-rich, eminently readable demonstration of why we should treat gun violence as an American epidemic."
-Scott Harshbarger, Former Attorney General of Massachusetts, President and CEO of Common Cause

On an average day in the United States, guns are used to kill almost eighty people, and to wound nearly three hundred more. If any other consumer product had this sort of disastrous effect, the public outcry would be deafening; yet when it comes to guns such facts are accepted as a natural consequence of supposedly high American rates of violence.

Private Guns, Public Health explodes that myth and many more, revealing the advantages of treating gun violence as a consumer safety and public health problem. David Hemenway fair-mindedly and authoritatively demonstrates how a public-health approach-which emphasizes prevention over punishment, and which has been so successful in reducing the rates of injury and death from infectious disease, car accidents, and tobacco consumption-can be applied to gun violence.

Hemenway uncovers the complex connections between guns and self-defense, gun violence and schools, gun prevalence and homicide, and more. Finally, he outlines a policy course that would significantly reduce gun-related injury and death.

With its bold new public-health approach to guns, Private Guns, Public Health marks a shift in our understanding of guns that will-finally-point us toward a solution.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
The public health community began researching gun violence about two decades ago, a late entrant in a field traditionally occupied by criminologists. David Hemenway, an economist at the Harvard School of Public Health and the director of the Injury Control Research Center there, has been a leader in this effort. His book is the first to synthesize the findings in this new field and to reference other literature as well. The book provides an account of the nature of the problem of gun violence and views about what can be done to mitigate it, engaging all the principal controversies. Scholars will appreciate the author's logical caution in drawing inferences from the evidence, as well as the methodologic appendix and superb bibliography. Yet the book is highly readable and will serve advocates and other interested citizens as an accessible, comprehensive briefing on the relevant statistics and arguments. (Figure) Hemenway develops the public health approach as a pragmatic, science-based effort to reduce injuries and deaths from gun violence. The goal is not to assign blame but, rather, to find solutions, with an emphasis on prevention. The canonical example for injury-control investigators is highway safety, in which the comprehensive approach propounded by Bill Haddon, a physician who served as the first director of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, continues to provide the conceptual framework. Haddon sought to direct the focus in highway safety away from improved driving and toward improved design of vehicles and roadways. For gun violence, the analogy is to focus less on the shooters and more on access to guns and their design. Of course, it is not obvious that an approach that has been successful in reducing highway crashes, which are mostly unintentional, will also be successful in curtailing the intentional acts (suicide and assault) that produce most gun injuries and deaths. If shooters were determined, resourceful people with clear and sustained deadly intent, then regulating guns would likely have little effect on the number of homicides and suicides; they would find a way. But in the real world, as Hemenway spells out, a large portion of serious intentional violence would be less deadly if guns were less readily available or less user-friendly. Furthermore, although gun "accidents" make up only a small fraction of the total gun injuries, they are common enough that the Consumer Product Safety Commission would surely give them high priority if it were not barred from doing so by federal law. Another feature separates firearms from vehicles: the possibility of "virtuous use." The belief in the importance of giving civilians a means of self-defense has long been used as an argument for preserving the right to keep handguns in the home. In recent decades, that philosophy has fueled a successful effort to ease state restrictions on carrying concealed weapons in public. This campaign has made great use of the work of criminologist Gary Kleck, who concluded from his analysis of survey data that there are millions of virtuous self-defense uses of guns each year. Hemenway has done more than any other scholar in rebutting that absurd claim. The book includes a summary of his results, which are so definitive as to settle the issue for any open-minded observer. When it comes time to assess the evidence on the effectiveness of particular interventions to reduce gun violence, Hemenway is restrained. He notes, "Unfortunately, there exist few convincing evaluations of past firearms laws." In reviewing the evidence on what works and what might work, he tends to believe that studies support the feasibility of reducing accidents and suicides more than they do the likelihood of cutting down on gun assaults. Here again, he summons a public health core principle: that good data are the precondition for progress. Indeed, he and his center get much of the credit for designing a practical system that is now in the pilot stage in a number of states, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The public health approach rests on the optimistic belief that good science will engender good policy and practice. Optimism is a scarce commodity in the area of gun policy. Private Guns, Public Health supplies reason to hope. Philip J. Cook, Ph.D.

Readable, hopeful, informative, and non-partisan study should be in every library and school
By Judy S. Young
Private Guns Public Health is a highly readable non partisan approach to sharing well documented public health aspects of gun policies. Reading this book changed my position from depression to hope. Hemenway has years of experience in the public health field, and makes very astute comparisons between the idea that teens are just going to die in car crashes frequently, because they are reckless, and the idea that gun deaths in the U.S. will remain many times as high per capita as other developed nations, because Americans are somehow just more violent. The facts show otherwise. Only in the area of gun violence are our numbers high. Hemenway quotes from a variety of reputable studies, and also shows where there are problems with some studies that are less reputable. The number of deaths in car crashes in our country have actually been hugely reduced by shatter proof windshields and seat belts, despite the fact that teens and others still sometimes drive recklessly. Similarly, by instituting sensible gun policies and standards for the manufacturing of safer guns, our gun deaths can be markedly reduced. In the past I have found it depressing to read about this issue, when the information shared was a litany of tragic stories of the people who died. Without lacking concern for the death toll in any way, Hemenway focuses strongly on what can be done about it. I have read about this issue before, but in a few pages I was educated far more usefully with this book. For instance, I had no idea before that although a quarter of American adults own a gun of some kind, 77% of all the guns owned in our country are owned by a mere 10% of our adult population. These gun owners have arsenals, whereas 90% of the population have either no guns or fewer than four. I hadn't realized that 60% of American men and 90% of American women do not own a gun at all. Further, gun owners are much more prevalent in the south and West than in the North-east, which makes it particularly revealing that a far higher percentage of gun deaths occur in the regions that are high in gun ownership. Among other things that became very very clear after reading Private Guns Public Health, more guns do not make us more safe. Instead, areas with more guns have substantially more gun deaths. But read this book--there are so many things we can do to reduce this public health epidemic of gun violence. Doctors can help by simply encouraging patients who own guns to store them safely. Manufacturers really must be required to produce guns that at least can pass a simple drop test! The tragedy of people who are killed because they or someone they are with simply dropped a gun, is unthinkable. When that someone is a child, whether the child is the shooter or the victim (often both), the tragedy is further compounded. This may be why pediatricians are the one group of medical professionals who have consistently stood up on this issue. They will ask the parents of the children they treat if there are guns in the home, if there are, they will ask them to store them safely--locked and unloaded. I am currently working with a group of concerned people to ask local doctors to have these conversations, and to provide pamphlets to their patients describing safe storage techniques. This is only one of a number of things that can save lives, not by taking away guns as some fear, but by introducing regulations to make guns safer, and requiring background checks for owners and other common sense measures that are fully supported by studies and shown to be effective. This book is really something that all American citizens should read and learn from.

Good, but with some editorial issues
By Michael J
The book has some editorial issues, but it's still an exhaustive and comprehensive book on the subject of SS7.

The editorial issues appear to be sections that need updating. For instance, portions of the first chapter are very dated, and no longer apply in 2014. For instance, on page 33, the author writes about "PCS" as if it were still the late 1990s. Carriers have now started using their PCS 1900 MHz spectrum for LTE. Also, on page 28, the author writes, "...[there] are many obstacles to supporting Internet access on wireless phones. The bandwidth required to support Web access is not yet available in North America (although Japan and many other countries are already enjoying this level of access)." This was the case as recently as several years ago when we had feature phones with WAP browsers, but no longer applies in 2014 when we have 100 Mbps LTE networks and smart phones and tablets with fully-functional browsers like Chrome and Safari.

If you want to learn SS7, and you're willing to overlook some issues with dated content, then this is still a good book.

The Sling and the Stone: On War in the 21st Century (Zenith Military Classics), by Thomas X. Hammes USMC

4GW (Fourth Generation Warfare) is the only kind of war America has ever lost. And we have done so three times - in Vietnam, Lebanon, and Somalia. This form of warfare has also defeated the French in Vietnam and Algeria, and the USSR in Afghanistan. As the only Goliath left in the world, we should be worried that the world's Davids have found a sling and stone that work." - Chapter 1, The Sling and the Stone: On War in the 21st Century. The War in Iraq. The War on Terror. These types of "asymmetrical" warfare are the conflicts of the 21st century - and show how difficult it is for the world's remaining superpower to battle insurgents and terrorists who will fight unconventionally in the face of superior military power. This change in military conflict may seem sudden.

From Booklist
Hammes is a career Marine Corps officer, and with this selection, he argues that the U.S. has adapted poorly in response to the new generation of guerrilla warfare. Fourth-generation warfare, as Hammes calls it, is what American forces encounter in Iraq and Afghanistan and Israelis find in Palestine, and it is the way of the future: guerrilla warfare characterized by political acumen and patience, using communications networks and strategic strikes to demoralize and exhaust conventionally superior militaries. For many military strategists, including those presently running the Defense Department, this new world order amounts to a call to newfangled technological arms, but for Hammes, smart bombs and spy drones are not the answer. The solution is to study our enemies as they have studied us and build a networked, flexible, and, here's the kicker, less hierarchical military structure that employs humans to fight the humans fighting us. As few as five years ago, such analysis would have had limited appeal, but in today's political climate, this concise, surprisingly readable book will attract a broad readership. Brendan Driscoll

Review

Military Review, March/April 2007
“Can a two-and-one-half-year-old book be reviewed as a classic? It can, and should, if it says the kinds of smart, prescient things that Hammes had to say in 2004. The Sling and the Stone was written to appeal to a vast and diverse audience. It provides numerous jewels of information for the general reader as well as senior military leaders, military operational planners and supporters, interagency personnel, and U.S. political leaders who are looking for a provocative read to aid them in making informed decisions in support of U.S. national security. Since its first publication, this visionary book has ignited others in public and private life to read, research, write, and advocate for the United States to change its defense posture in order to meet the challenge posed by the advent of 4GW. Many of Hammes’ ideas have now been adopted by the military and are currently in practice in Iraq and Afghanistan. Other ideas are being studied extensively within the Washington Beltway. U.S. homeland security and counterinsurgency doctrines have also been strongly influenced and shaped by this book. Hammes has truly been a catalyst for change … Hammes’s book is truly an enlightening must-read for Military Review’s readers, particularly those attending career military schools. It should remain so for many years to come.”

Parameters: U.S. Army War College Quarterly, Autumn 2005“This is a stimulating – nay, provocative – book that should cause military readers and all associated with the security of the United States to question their fundamental assumptions. It is also a gutsy book because the author, a serving officer, asserts in effect that the Secretary of Defense, his team in the Pentagon, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff are wrong in the way they are fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He further contends that the United States stands a good chance of losing its wars in the future unless the forces confront the realities of warfare in this century.”

About the Author
A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a career Marine, Thomas Hammes has spent most of his twenty-eight years serving in infantry and intelligence assignments. Colonel Hammes is considered by many in the defense community as the foremost expert in insurgent warfare. He has written numerous articles on defense issues and has appeared on PBS News Hour and other cable and network broadcasts. He is a senior military fellow at the National Defense University. He lives with his family in northern Virginia.

Modern warfare is every bit as complex as modern life -- and getting moreso every day
By BLF
A very interesting account of the history of war and how war has evolved. It puts in context the motives and intents of terrorists that affect so much of the modern world. Quite important to understand this in coming to decisions on how to respond to terrorism, because if you don't know what they are trying to accomplish you cannot effectively thwart them. I really appreciated this viewpoint as they always seemed like angry but ineffectual criminals, but now I better see what their aim is so I can choose actions that help oppose them.

A Need Type of Training to Help Military Leaders to Succeed
By A dad
USMC Colonel Hammes provides a general education about fourth-generation warfare (4GW) and its implications for our future. Hammes describes this form of guerrilla warfare and devotes chapters to modern experiences. He analyzes the current situation and gives a prognosis for the future.

I found the best chapters on historical 4GW the ones on Mao in China and the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, although all the chapters were unique and instructive. In both of these instances, guerrilla wars were run by practical leaders, not idealists as they projected themselves. They were simply ambitious and disciplined leaders using 4WG tactics over a long time horizon to gain the prize - ultimate political power.

Once in power, 4GW leaders renege on promises made to followers and populations that supported them at great risk. The degree of sacrifice demanded by such leaders versus our own politicians distinguishes them. Think about how many people work for a presidential campaign full-time based on the promise of a federal job and the relatively small percentage that actually get the promised federal job. Guerrilla leaders are no different in that regard except their followers often risked their lives fighting for them. Despite all the rhetoric, successful 4GW campaigns are fought over years by ambitious practical leaders.

4GW succeeds best against bureaucratic political-military organizations that throw great resources at winning non-strategic victories with short-term planning horizons. For example, the U.S. could theoretically win a battle or some territory and declare victory for local press within the U.S. This, however, does not impress enemies of the U.S. or make them lose their will to fight. That's an example of the threat.

Colonel Hammes demonstrates that technological innovation tends to favor guerrilla fighters more than conventionally organized and heavily resourced military hierarchies. This is almost counterintuitive because one naturally understands how technology will favor oneself, but we have to work very hard at understanding the enemy and how the enemy sees things. According to Hammes, we are not going to find salvation in technological advancement, important as it is. We're must take a lot of time to develop human resources. We must fight the enemy strategically as long as it takes and forget about using the military to win reelection. 4GW plays out over many years, perhaps decades.

The Sling and the Stone is a revolutionary treatise on warfare. It has already influenced our next generation of military leaders. Hammes inspired a new cadre of military intellectuals. There will be more books to build on Hammes' concepts, and military courses with updated training and enlightened instructors.

We must change the game which is currently based on using ever-increasing sums of public funds to finance weapon systems that power political campaigns and promise lucrative retirement of top-ranking officers, according to the author. We have to change, adapt, and become flexible and smarter.

Quick and easy answers are desired while the situations call for patience
By Christopher Zell
Even if you disagree with things in this book, it serves as a starting point to understand why the foreign/military policies of the US are dismal failures - and why they will continue to be. They can bomb anyone but can't end most insurgencies. Quick and easy answers are desired while the situations call for patience, wisdom and diplomacy.

Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms: Journeys Into the Disappearing Religions of the Middle East, by Gerard Russell

Despite its reputation for religious intolerance, the Middle East has long sheltered many distinctive and strange faiths: one regards the Greek prophets as incarnations of God, another reveres Lucifer in the form of a peacock, and yet another believes that their followers are reincarnated beings who have existed in various forms for thousands of years. These religions represent the last vestiges of the magnificent civilizations in ancient history: Persia, Babylon, Egypt in the time of the Pharaohs. Their followers have learned how to survive foreign attacks and the perils of assimilation. But today, with the Middle East in turmoil, they face greater challenges than ever before.

In Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms, former diplomat Gerard Russell ventures to the distant, nearly impassable regions where these mysterious religions still cling to survival. He lives alongside the Mandaeans and Ezidis of Iraq, the Zoroastrians of Iran, the Copts of Egypt, and others. He learns their histories, participates in their rituals, and comes to understand the threats to their communities. Historically a tolerant faith, Islam has, since the early 20th century, witnessed the rise of militant, extremist sects. This development, along with the rippling effects of Western invasion, now pose existential threats to these minority faiths. And as more and more of their youth flee to the West in search of greater freedoms and job prospects, these religions face the dire possibility of extinction.

Drawing on his extensive travels and archival research, Russell provides an essential record of the past, present, and perilous future of these remarkable religions.

Review
Wall Street Journal
“It is difficult to imagine a more timely book than Gerard Russell’s Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms: Journeys Into the Disappearing Religions of the Middle East. Equal parts travelogue and history, Mr. Russell’s meticulously researched book takes readers into some of the region’s least-known minority communities: the Mandaeans of Iraq, the Copts of Egypt, the Zoroastrians, the Samaritans, and, yes, the Yazidis.”

New York Review of Books
“[A] remarkable book.... The great virtue of Russell’s book is its courageous spirit of sympathy for an immense range of human experience.... An urgently needed corrective in our age of deepening religious divisions.”

Financial Times
“A fascinating survey of threatened and vanishing minority religions across the broader Middle East, written in an even tone sprinkled with wonder.”

New York Times Book Review By the Book
“[A] highly topical study of Middle Eastern anomalies which is teaching me a lot, and should be read by all Western policy makers — those who do read.”

Literary Review (UK)
“Part vivid odyssey, part lucid history.... Gerard Russell's timely and humane depiction of [these cultures] is a compelling read.”

Bookforum
“A nation-hopping guidebook to the theology and customs of believers who can’t fully inhabit the imaginations of many Western readers without a proper introduction.... Engaging and informative.... Russell introduces a cast of characters who, even when offering cagey responses to his earnest questions, humanize groups that news reports tend to treat as extras on the world stage.”

The National
“Gerard Russell, a former British diplomat who has served throughout the region, is a worthy successor to the great British Arabists of the past, passionately interested in the area and its people.... Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms is informative, thought-provoking and timely. It provides fascinating insights into the mosaic of religious beliefs that can be found throughout the Middle East, and also into how that diversity emerged and survived. Eschewing discussion of modern politics, it presents a challenge, nevertheless, to those who bear the responsibility for how this diversity can be preserved in the years to come. All humanity will be the loser should it disappear.”

Shelf Awareness for Readers
“An important and engaging book for anyone interested in the Middle East.”

Publishers Weekly, starred review
“[A] fascinating account of minority religions in Middle East.... By tying modern practice to historical context, Russell provides a valuable briefing on the ancient and medieval history of the region. He also muses on the immediate future of each community, particularly with respect to political instability and immigration, and his cheerfully personal tone makes all this information lively. This important and enjoyable glimpse into little-considered religious dynamics of the Middle East deserves to be widely read and distributed.”

Booklist
“Russell, a former British and UN diplomat who lived in the Middle East for 15 years, proves an excellent tour guide as he introduces the remnants of these near-extinct groups…a fascinating read, especially when it becomes clear that, with a few twists of history, some of these religions would have been at the top, not the bottom.”

Library Journal
“A fascinating and gracefully written study of minority religions, recommended for its appreciate of cultural richness and variety.”

Kirkus
“Russell penetrates the secret workings of these religions tolerated throughout the ages by Christian or Islamic rulers, even pursuing his research to immigrant churches in Dearborn, Michigan. A pertinent work of history and journalism. As armies again march in the Middle East, these communities are at new risk.”

Ambassador Peter W. Galbraith, author of The End of Iraq
“This beautifully written account of the Middle East’s unknown and vanishing religions could not be more timely. Just as the world turns its attention to the extremist attacks on Iraq’s Yazidis, Gerard Russell tells us who they are. Russell’s book—based on his travels among the Yazidis, Mandaeans (followers of John the Baptist), Zoroastrians, Samaritans, Copts, and Druze—is the story of people and faiths that have links back to the dawn of civilization. It is travel writing in the tradition of Rebecca West and Robert Kaplan, but possibly better.”

Carne Ross, former diplomat and founder of Independent Diplomat
“Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms has the beauty, wisdom, and tragedy of the best elegies. Gerard Russell’s book is both timely and necessary, a scholarly and personal observation of religions that are the heritage of all mankind, yet are rapidly disappearing. It is part travelogue and part history of some of the original wellsprings of human culture, both ancient and modern, but also a meditation upon rites and beliefs that are mysterious and fascinating but grievously threatened. Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms is essential reading for everyone who cares about the Middle East, religion, and indeed our common history.”

Peter Bergen, author of Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden from 9/11 to Abbottabad
“As the al-Qaeda splinter group, ISIS, storms across Syria and Iraq and attempts to destroy the Yazidi religious sect, now comes Gerard Russell, an erudite, polylingual former British diplomat, who documents the fates of the ancient religions of the Middle East, many of which are on the brink of extinction. Russell writes beautifully and reports deeply, and his account of these ‘disappearing religions’ will be an enduring anthropology of largely-hidden worlds that may disappear within our own lifetimes.”

Ali Asani, Professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic Religion and Cultures, Director, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Islamic Studies Program, Harvard University
“An eloquent and sensitive portrayal of the Middle East's lesser known religions, whose existence is severely threatened by the strident nationalisms and proxy wars that are currently tearing apart a region once renowned for its tolerance. Gerard Russell gives a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves, those whose traditions—handed down through many centuries—are being disregarded and indeed obliterated in a blaze of violence and hatred. He lifts the ‘veil of ignorance’ and reveals just what is at stake—both in the Middle East and around the world. Through extensive and meticulous research, and encompassing years of travel to distant places to meet in person those whose lives have been turned upside down, Mr. Russell's passionate message touches the heart and reminds us of the value and beauty of tolerance.”

Tom Holland, author of In the Shadow of the Sword: The Battle for Global Empire and the End of the Ancient World
“It is unbearably poignant that a book so learned and so beautifully written should have been written about the religious minorities of the Middle East just as many of them seem on the verge of extinction. Rarely have I read anything so timely.”

Emma Sky, Senior Fellow at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, Yale University
“Gerard Russell's beautifully written book provides wonderful insights into the Middle East and the beauty of the different cultures that have flourished there for centuries. It is a welcome respite from the usual portrayal of violence in the region, and at the same time a wake-up call of what will be lost if a perverse form of violent extremism is allowed to prevail. At a time when religion is so often seen as a cause of war, this book shows how lives can be enriched by maintaining rituals and beliefs through generations.”

James Traub, columnist for foreignpolicy.com
“Gerard Russell has written a wonderfully beguiling Baedaker to the vastness of the Middle East, where ancient religions have survived like the remnants of an all-but-extinct species. At a time when the region is boiling with sectarian violence, Russell reminds us that the Arab world, and Islam itself, has given shelter to ancient faiths when Christian Europe would not. Heirs To Forgotten Kingdoms is a loving tribute to the ancient and the strange, to spliced genealogies, and to the heroic defense of heterodoxy in an increasingly intolerant world.”

Kwasi Kwarteng, Member of Parliament
“Original, instructive, and entertaining, Gerard Russell’s Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms weaves ideas and travel experiences into an excellent narrative. This is a brilliant book.”

Ambassador Akbar Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University in Washington, DC and the former Pakistani High Commissioner to the UK
“Oxford and Harvard, fluency in Arabic and Farsi, postings with the British Foreign Service in the Middle East and Afghanistan—as a scholar-diplomat Gerard Russell seems almost too good to be true. He brings these gifts to his beautifully written account of some of the most fascinating and little known communities facing the challenges of globalization. Read it to understand the complexity of—and hope in—our world.”

Parag Khanna, author of The Second World: Empires and Influence in the New Global Order
“At a time when minorities—and even majorities—are being persecuted across the Middle East, ancient faiths continue, just barely, to survive. Gerard Russell not only recalls a more tolerant past through his sketches of now exotic tribes and rituals, but also paints a deep and complex relief to help us understand this troubled region’s evolution. Russell is a true classical diplomat: explorer, linguist, scholar—and master storyteller.”

So who are the Yazidis and why should I care?
By Robert Johnston
...that was a question I wondered about. We don't get much background from media who told us ISIL had slaughtered them, hounded them, and then finally corralled them up an obscure mountain called Sinjar to end them. Who are these peculiar people of such primitive, ancient and 'backwoods' roots?

The 21st century veil of obscurity is raised here by Russell. Here you can discover the Yazidis and Harranians, the Mandaeans, Zoroastrian's and Bhai, Druze, the Samaritans, the Copts and Kalasha in an extraordinarily well framed witness to "Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms". Russell takes the reader into the lethal peculiarities of these accursed living lines. We can see them through Russell's expert eye as they fade from existence in the harshest ways. This is the story of ancient 'heretics', followers of a lesser god and pagans living in the deepest tribal isolation under the unrelenting pressure of genocide in today's Islamic wars. Russell explores the ancient nuances revealed in the Islamic Sunni vs Shiite real estate grab of today. I was blind to the implications of Islamic 'justice', finally consummated according to medieval fatwas befalling these living heretics and pagans. Here is the story of 8th century justice at last rendered on the living.

What struck me most in the fascinating read is the magnitude of the catastrophe. It must be historically unique to the 21st century. How can it be that these tightly knit and ancient enclaves are being lost forever with barely a peep from the mightier powers that might preserve them? Are they just not worth it?

This book pulls hard at humanitarian concepts and pulls hardest at the reader's heartstrings ... the 'Last of the Mohicans' is the feeling. It seems this story can't possibly be true but a quick search attests to veracity. What an unmitigated human disaster Russell has profiled. It sticks to me. Russell explores the planets most endangered species, these humans of a lesser god and of the bloody stain on nations that could make it otherwise. It's the story of witness that I've not seen in my lifetime.

The story is incomplete in some ways. The extreme persecutions of the few remaining Jews in Muslim lands are under no less jeopardy ... 10 Jews left in Cairo? This is not a criticism of what the book covers so well. It's simply the fact that there is more to the story. The epilogue as Russell follows the remnants of these communities to exile in America and elsewhere is an uneasy story to conclude upon. Happy they are to be alive, but broken. How will the story continue?

This is a 5-star, well written, must read ... for the interested. I found myself embarrassed for 21st century evolved notions of`humanity'. I was humbled.

A related but more ancient telling of similar calamity caught my attention a while back. If you choose to read this book, you might also enjoy The Lost History of Christianity: The Thousand-Year Golden Age of the Church in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia--and How It Died

Three reasons I loved this book
By Michael Webb
Most reviews of this book focus on its timeliness in the face of ISIS (let alone Modernity). This is no doubt a good reason to read it. But here are some other reasons:

1. What insight into humanity's imagination!

Every other page I exclaimed in delight at some marvelous story or ritual that Russell has uncovered - either in an ancient text he has found in some dusty archive, or by direct observation of its practice today. Consider the characters of Mandaean mythology. There is Krun, the flesh mountain, who according to Russell "sounds a bit like Jabba the Hutt"; the dragon Ur, who sits above an ocean of flammable oil, and, Russell's professed favorite, the demon Dinanukht, "who is half man and half book and 'sits by the waters between the worlds, reading himself.'"

Or consider the Kalasha, whose rule-makers seem to have had a touch of OCD: "The right hand, the male sex, the high mountains, purity, odd numbers, and life all were affiliated with each other; to these were opposed the left hand, the female sex, the low valleys, impurity, even numbers, and death. So the men sat on the right-hand side of their houses and the women on the left. Likewise, it was men who herded the goats and women who planted crops, men who went into the mountains and women whose place was in the valleys, and women who were prone to all kinds of impurity." Russell then tells how "I was scolded for touching a village house as I passed it, since even this made it impure, and meant more juniper branches would need to be burned to restore its pristine state."

2. You'll learn a lot

The author wears his learning lightly, yet it bursts through on every page. What I appreciated especially was the enormous range of his references. For example, a modern Mandaean tells Russell that "I am sure there was a time when Mandaean women could be priests, not just men." Russell not only is able to confirm the particular fact about Mandaeanism: "She was right: in the Drasa da Yehia [a Mandaean holy book], a Jewish woman converts to Mandaeanism and becomes a priest." But he also mentions in passing: "Similarly, in ancient Babylon women could serve as priests. For that matter, women occasionally achieved secular positions of power in the ancient Middle East. The ancient Persian navy had a female admiral - Artemisia, back in the fifth century BC - and in the third century AD Palmyra had a powerful queen, Zenobia."

He also gives fascinating philosophical and historical context for many of his observations. For example, while describing asceticism, he speculates about the philosophical source of the self-denial: "Society was technologically advanced... Yet cesspits had to be cleaned out by hand, diseases such as typhoid were common, and wounds might easily develop gangrene. The body's weakness and foulness were in strange contrast to the intellect's amazing achievements. Since at this time it was not generally understood that the intellect had any connection with the brain (Galen realized that it did, but Aristotle had thought the brain existed just to release heat from the body), it was easy to suppose that the mind, or soul, could survive without the messiness of the body." What a striking thought - and how simply, and gracefully, argued.

3. Last chance to see?

Apart from at the very end, Russell does not say much about what *he* thinks about these religions and what's happening to them: he is the dispassionate academic observer, if one with unusual skill, intrepidity, and verve. He allows his subjects to speak for themselves. But when they do, it is often with considerable passion, beauty, and insight. Consider George, a Palestinian living in a Jewish neighborhood in Detroit. "Coming here [America] was the worst decision I ever made," he tells Russell. "I thought it would be like a salad, every ingredient taking on flavor from the other. It's more like a blender - everything ends up gray."

And this is one reason these religions may not be here for much longer, to say nothing of their more violent and deliberate destruction in recent years and months. The modern world must bear a debt of gratitude to Russell for writing this book: the product of a lifetime of learning, and years of travel in the most dangerous places on earth. That his documentation of these ancient religions has yielded something of enduring beauty - and that is, dare I say it, a page-turner - is remarkable. I urge you to buy it.

Great content, lousy physical book (hardcover)
By Amazon Customer
Splendid content, dreadful physical book. This is a truly wonderful book. Kind, insightful, personally researched. I can't say enough about the content. On the other hand, the book itself is printed on cheap paper and the illustrations can only be called shameful. I have the Kindle version and the illustrations are in color and very clear. The edition I received, to give as a gift, have washed out sepia or b/w photo that were nearly worthless. It is a shame that book published has descended to this level. What ever happened to "printed on acid-free paper?"
