Jason J. Czarnezki is Professor of Law in the Environmental Law Center at Vermont Law School, home to one of the nation’s leading environmental and natural resources law and policy programs. Previously, Professor Czarnezki served as a law clerk to the Honorable D. Brock Hornby of the US District Court for the District of Maine and as a law clerk for the Bureau of Legal Services at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Professor Czarnezki received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Chicago.

Ecclectic subject matter but thought provoking

This book is more like the beginning of several books rather than a single cohesive, finished book. (I urge the writer to take up some of the topics in more depth in other works!). It covers very important subjects, including small species decline (bees, bugs, etc.), and explores how the law and other measures can support their preservation. It touches on many subjects that could be expanded, and provides a starting point for thinking about how to address them. I have been reading a number of books on sustainability, global warming, etc. and this one comes from a different perspective and offers practical measures rather than saying "we should" reduce greenhouse gas emissions, etc. and leaving the "how to do that" piece for the reader to ponder - and worry about - herself. This is not a monumental work, but it adds a very worthwhile and thought provoking dimension to the growing body of literature addressing the decline of the environment, global warming, sustainability and other timely matters.

Home run

This is the 16th and last volume of the super-encyclopaedia to end all super-encyclopaedias, "Handbook of the Birds of the World", published by Lynx Edicions.

The first volume was published already in 1992, this one in 2011. Thus, the entire work took almost 20 years to complete! But then, there are almost 10,000 species of birds, so we shouldn't really be surprised.

This concluding volume covers four passerine families: Tanagers, Cardinals, Buntings and New World Sparrows, New World Blackbirds.

As usual, the photos and plates are excellent (and all in colour!), while the accompanying text is rather heavy and mostly geared to a scientific audience, and perhaps very advanced bird-watchers. This is a book for the reference library. Still, it's so well-produced that I wasn't surprised to find that the website of the publisher offer it to the general reader, as well. You can even pay in instalments!

Of the innumerable facts found in this volume, one in particular struck me. The global population of the Red-Winged Blackbird is 200 million, making it one of the most common birds in North America. Aha! Somehow, this solves the perennial small town "mystery" of why hundreds of Blackbirds occasionally fall dead from the skies...

Here's a clue: it really wasn't UFOs or aliens after all, so please delay that call to National Enquirer!

Managing Virtually

How do you manage a virtual team? What about cultural differences? Is email the best way to communicate? How do you integrate team members across cultural boundaries?

This book answers all these questions and more. It is to the point and has some valuable information. As someone who has managed virtual teams before, there are a lot of helpful hints this book gives you that I wish I had when I started. As much as there is to like, I also thought that everything after Chapter 7 was not as applicable to just virtual teams. The information in Chapters 8 and onward can really be applied by any manager anywhere. Its good information, but not really enough. The authors try and take too many broad concepts and break them down for virtual teams, and the last chapters have a whole lot of good information, but not much great information.

* A lot of good information
* First seven chapters are excellent

Cons
* Last half of the book loses focus
* Would have liked information on building virtual teams (ie, what sites to use, what screening questions, etc.)
* Best information is contained in side bars and bonus boxes rather than the actual text

All in all, this would be a great book to pick up for anyone who has to manage virtual teams or is thinking about managing virtual teams. Recommended. In the "Manager's Guide to Virtual Teams," readers will find more than the typical team leader and team-building information, as it goes beyond the meeting room to encompass members located elsewhere and the issues this brings for the team and leader. Yes, the book covers team basics like: budget, charter, collaboration, communication, decision making, goal setting, roles with responsibilities and accountability, operating guidelines, performance feedback, problem solving, and trust. And the Fishers go beyond that to explain how these things may be more important to or more difficult for virtual teams. Why it is important for the team to understand business and their customer is also presented. The virtual team issues of members being in different geographical locations, across multiple time zones and work shifts, as w ell as dealing with varying cultures is emphasized throughout the book. The use of technology such as telephone, email, internet meetings, texting, videoconference, and etcetera is discussed. Tips on obtaining work/life balance for the manager and their team members are also provided.

As a leader's guidebook , case studies and assessments for the team leader are included for use in planning, as well as a checklist at the end of every chapter to review main points. Plus helpful activity instructions are available in the chapters where the leader should facilitate a particular type of discussion with their team.

Great Management Advice for a New Type of Team

Most of us now either work or know someone who does in "virtual," or non-face-to-face, environments. This new work innovation presents special challenges, benefits and obstacles whether workers are in the same country or increasingly, in several different countries around the world.

Organized Format Expedites Learning

The book contains seventeen concise yet detailed chapters introduced by enlightening quotes. There are also ample table of contents and index sections. The co-author's writing style is engaging, conversational and knowledgeable. "Key Terms" sections quickly explain concepts that may be unfamiliar to the reader. I liked this feature since it provided easy access for future reference. There were also helpful sidebar items to reinforce integral points such as "For Example" and "Smart Managing". I also enjoyed the "Manager's Checklists" at the end of each chapter which was another innovative feature to help virtual team managers.

Practical Advice

One of the most salient features of this book was its generous doses of common-sense advice. For example, "We have a business contact in Moscow who has an 11-hour time difference from our location in Portland, Oregon. Every virtual meeting requires someone to work outside of the "normal" 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. workday. In these cases, do your best to minimize this problem by choosing the least disruptive times." Or one that few writers would have had the courage to include: "If you discover that deep-seated or irreversible cultural biases exist on your team (members of warring groups or religious sects, for example), you may have to adjust your staffing."

Cluttered Layout in Some Areas

At times, too much information was presented in small spaces due to the chosen book layout and sidebar features. Even though this is a "Briefcase Book," I believe that more white space in some areas (for the physical book which I read) might have made this publication easier to read. This is not a criticism of the excellent content; however, a longer book (it was 214 pages before the index) might have made a few sections less cluttered. Some readers may not mind. Especially if they use this book more as a reference source than a daily guide.

The fuzzy picture's gone!

This book should be recommended reading for analysts, police executives, operational staff and students of policing.

Ratcliffe's experiences and knowledge provide rich insights into ILP, painting a clear picture in the process. Specifically, Ratcliffe answers several questions about ILP. In doing so, he:

* defines ILP;
* traces its origins;
* explores its relationship with other policing paradigms;
* highlights its distinctive features;
* shows how ILP impacts on crime and
* discusses whether it prevents crime.

The book is well structured and is complemented by chapter introductions defining Ratcliffe's arguments. Each chapter also contains a practitioner viewpoint, which augments the chapter contents and demonstrates theory in practice. Ratcliffe's writing is readable, clear and often provokes a smile. He includes a limited list of acronyms and, as expected, a comprehensive bibliography covering extant literature on ILP (none as comprehensive as Ratcliffe's), other policing paradigms and several interesting research studies.

Conceding the elusive nature of ILP, Ratcliffe defines it as a business model and managerial philosophy in which data analysis and crime intelligence (a combination of crime analysis and criminal intelligence) are the cornerstones of an objective, decision-making framework. At the framework's core are crime/intelligence analysts, responsible for producing analysis and intelligence, that is, actionable knowledge that is client-specific. This is used to impact on crime and problems (reduction, disruption and prevention.)

Ratcliffe employs two key conceptual aids to support his arguments: the crime funnel and the 3-i model. The crime funnel is used to illustrate the size of the crime challenge and to demonstrate the limitations of the `arrest and prosecute' approach to suppress criminal acts. Ratcliffe uses the crime funnel to show that for every 1000 crimes only 4 offenders are incarcerated.

The 3-i model - interpret-influence-impact - is a cyclic concept that conceptualises the processes inherent in ILP. The agency's crime intelligence analysis section interprets the criminal environment; the agency analysts attempt to influence agency decision makers through recommendations; and the decision-makers then make decisions and take actions to impact on the criminal environment. This model departs from other analytical process models in that it is contextualised in the crime and policing environments.

Early in the book, a New Jersey Fusion Centre worker lament is quoted: "Building the plane as we're flying it." The same charge can no longer be levied against ILP for Jerry Ratcliffe has produced its first blue print.

This book is touted as the definitive work on ILP which is the newest policing philisophy. The book came highly recommended as one to read, re-read, and keep around as a reference if you are involved in the implementation and/or management of ILP so for that I would recommend it.

Dr. Jerry Ratcliffe presents the policing philosophies in a framework with strengths and weakness along with actionable solutions using "intelligence"! His book is an excellent guide for police agencies to address the policing paradigms.

Police leaders, managers and patrol officers all must recognize the support the academic community can provide. Yes Jerry, "intelligence" is an abused word per se in policing; not just the "Secret Sam" surveillance, undercover work or covert operations. "Intelligence' is problem resolution leading with accountability and sustainability.

We must look in our own backyards and focus on the local priorities to keep our communities safe to reduce crime and the fear of crime. Local police resources must be balanced with the State and National levels to target organized crime including terrorism without over taxing the local citizens' pockets.

Police Leaders, this is a must read and a must share with your organization!

Excellent book to "spark" your creativity!

I love this book! I can not say it enough, this book is absolutely wonderful! Just opening the front cover will spark creativity and leave you with tons of notes and entries in your journal that you will enjoy for years to come! Not only are the ideas full of creative fun, they leave you with tons of other ideas and ways you can branch out from an activity to create new ones. Plus the book comes with colorful paper and stickers that you can use as well. How cool is that?! I love books that serve many purposes and this one definitely does. Each idea has tons of cool pictures with directions, tips and other things you can try. I have not been able to put this book down all weekend and have filled tons of pages in my journal while preparing lessons for my kids. I can't wait to get started with this book with my kids!

I bought Journal Sparks for my son but keep borrowing it back!

Journal Sparks is so appealing, with thoughtful projects and beautiful artwork -- I knew my son would love it. What I didn't expect was that I'd find myself lingering over pages with watercolor washes and feeling inspired to add doodles and color to my own journal. So many cool starting points for even the youngest kids and Neuburger's playful approach will draw out even hesitant writer and artists. Highly recommended. I love this book!

This book just landed in my hands and I can't stop turning the pages and smiling.
It is vibrant and clever and filled with joy. The colors alone make me want to grab a paintbrush and step in!
It's all manageable, all approachable, and the invitation to take a risk is offered with an open hand and heart.
The tiny drawings, the collections of small objects, small phrases, small prompts make it all so possible.
Don't be fooled by the child-friendly instructions. We are all children when it comes to taking that first step.
This is a book for the child who lives within each one of us:)

A Simple Idea with Profound Implications Nicely Done

After reading Glimmer, Warren Berger's 2009 book looking at designers and design thinking, I became a fan of sorts and pre-ordered A More Beautiful Question anticipating something good as a follow-up. I wasn't disappointed. Like Glimmer -- and perhaps design thinking -- Berger takes both a deep dive and a broad stroke over his subject matter. This is tough to do well, but Berger pulls it off.

There is something delightful about looking at something that seems so obvious and simple, but is far from simplistic, in detail. Berger goes through the vast swaths of research and evidence on question formation and innovation and blends it seamlessly with anecdotes, observations and questions...lots and lots of questions. To 'live the title' of the book, the text is organized around questions and, at least with the Kindle, the questions are hyperlinked to explanations at the back about their origin and relevance. This feature was wonderful and frustrating -- but largely due to technology. I read using a Nexus tablet, but my preferred reader is the original Kindle. On that latter device, the linking becomes a frustration in that it is sometimes hard to get back to your place. But that's a small point.

Berger's style of writing is engaging, balancing conciseness with informality, and using enough revisiting of ideas in different places in the text to thread ideas throughout the narrative, but not too much to feel repetitive. I loved this just as I loved Glimmer.

What a reader will take from this is that questions are important, that the best (and most consistent) innovators, leaders and scientists are typically great at asking questions and not just providing answers. Indeed, Berger makes the case that the question and answer are inextricably linked showing dozens of examples of how the habits of questioning lead to exciting outcomes. He also offers a challenge to anyone involved in education -- which, he'd argue is nearly everyone in this age of change and ongoing learning -- to examine how questions are encouraged and discouraged to shun curiosity. This has enormous implications and, as we see, gets replicated in our businesses and other organizations.

If this book does anything for you I hope it gets you to ask better questions and enjoy not always having answers. Taken to heart, the message of paying attention to the questions -- living the questions if you will -- is one that may have profound consequences on your life, work, and learning.

An Inspiring Look At Inquiry Leading To Innovation

I recently attended an excellent seminar for senior executives called "Authentic Leadership." The facilitator of my small group had some encouraging things to say about the way that I frame questions. He then added: "I think that you would enjoy reading 'A More Beautiful Question.'" At his urging, I ordered the book and found that he was correct in his prognostication. I found this book to be intriguing and inspiring.

Using some excellent cases to illustrate principles, author Warren Berger discusses "The Power of Inquiry To Spark Breakthrough Ideas." He quotes liberally from such icons of innovation as Joichi Ito of the MIT Media Lab, David Kelly of IDEO, and Clayton Christensen of Harvard Business School. My office is contained within a hub of innovation, the Cambridge Innovation Center ,on the campus of MIT, so I am always intrigued to learn new lessons about innovation and the things that may spark it.

One of the threads that weaves itself throughout this book is the fact that children are natural questioners. It is only as we grow older that we tend to squelch our innate propensity to ask questions in order to better understand ourselves and the world around us. In this book, Mr. Berger offers many examples of individuals and companies that he re-learned the art of asking great questions.

I was intrigued to learn that Edwin Land, the father of instant photography, was prompted to develop this technology when his young daughter innocently asked him why they had to wait to see a photograph that he had taken when they were on vacation as a family.

He makes specific suggestions, based on research done at the Right Question Institute, regarding how to frame appropriate questions at each stage of a process of exploration, discovery and innovation. One insight that stood out for me was the use of terminology that is useful in a group setting that disarms defensive posture on the part of those participating in the conversation. The form of the question that often provokes healthy discussion is to ask: "How might we . . . .?" He also describes the technique that has worked for many companies of replacing "brainstorming" with "question storming."

His final challenge which he poses in the final chapter of the book, is to ask how each individual might frame "a more beautiful question" that frames and sparks inquiry and endeavors to provide meaning and purpose for the rest of one's life. Inspiring!

Excellent Book About the Question Process

Don't think it really occurred to me that that there was a process to questions. That there is a progression from why to what if to how. That things don't work so well if you go straight to the how.

I have had it in my head that I am not supposed to ask why questions. That this supposedly gets you stuck in the past, on who is to blame, on explanations. But when you ask, "why am I doing this? " you are really looking for intention. So I have put back "why" into my toolbox after reading this book.

Another useful thing was the discussion about how business sees asking questions as a waste of time and a distraction from acting. I have not been a fan of the old "just do it" thing and this reinforced why I am uncomfortable with it. A quote from some other book - "action without strategy is stupid!"

So overall a very powerful and practical book. No academic ivory tower "let's just sit here and theorise and make our selves sound smart by asking lots of questions" type of stuff.
