About the Author
Mark ‘Marty’ Rathbun was Inspector General of the Religious Technology Center (RTC), the organization that controls the copyrights and trademarks of the materials relating to Dianetics and Scientology. His role was to head the Inspector General Network, described by the Church of Scientology as "an independent investigatory and policing body whose function is to keep Scientology working by ensuring the pure and ethical use of Dianetics and Scientology technology." The post is one of the most senior management functions in the Church and its related organizations. Rathbun left the Church of Scientology in 2004. He is now an independent Scientologist. As such he and his wife, Monique, provide counseling and auditing services for other Scientologists that have cut their ties with the Church of Scientology. He emerged as a critical source in a 2009 Tampa Bay Times expose on the organization, revealing that physical violence is a common occurrence within Scientology management, and that Scientology head David Miscavige regularly beats his staff, and orders staff to administer beatings to designated individuals. The key to understanding this book is that its title is truthful: the author, while no longer a top official of the Church of Scientology, is -- still -- a Scientology Warrior. This is not of the "I-was-a-Scientologist-until-I-realized-it-is-phony" genre.

Rathbun is a true believer. He compares L. Ron Hubbard to the Buddha. His descriptions of Scientology's teachings are supportive and sympathetic. He even seems to accept the Xenu story, suggesting that it is in essence consistent with Gnostic philosophy (which is true, though the same can be said more convincingly of Mormonism; in any event, Rathbun does not explain why the fact that it echoes a recurrently-popular idea over two thousand years old proves that it was a cosmic insight of L. Ron Hubbard). The books' theme is that David Miscavige has perverted and largely destroyed a religion that could have brought wisdom and health to the world, mostly by defeating psychiatrists. Rathbun's animus against them stems from his dislike of the psychiatrist who treated his brother, who was apparently psychotic; this is a principal subject of the book's five introductory biographical chapters, which is, with all due respect, about three too many. They do explain, though, that like so many of the people who have joined and left Scientology Rathbun was a rootless child from a dysfunctional family who lacked education beyond High School.

Much of the book deals with Rathbun's involvement in coordinating legal matters, mostly lawsuits against Hubbard and Scientology. Although he has no legal training his experience gave him a good understanding of litigation. His descriptions of law, procedure, and strategy, as well as of the kinds of debates and discussions that go on behind the scenes before and during trials, are accurate.

The book discusses a few of Scientology's embarrassing episodes and acknowledges that they occurred with Hubbard's knowledge and approval, and generally at his inspiration. But it presents them as unfortunate excesses committed as overreactions to nefarious acts of Scientology's vicious and unprincipled "enemies," including psychiatrists, law enforcement, and various state and federal government agencies. Rathbun tells us that he has seen documents proving that the psychiatrists, etc., did lots of bad things but that the documents couldn't actually be revealed, you see, because even though they were stolen by Scientologists (one of those unfortunate excesses) to prove these things, revealing them would harm Scientology.

The book's editors are Scientologist friends of Rathbun; his prose is clear and easily-read but a professional might have pointed out that it does not always recognize where real English stops and Scientology jargon begins. The proofreading is not perfect; there are, at least at the moment, a few typos and places where information is repeated, clearly inadvertently, but not enough to be bothersome.

What a read!

Loved this book. It reads like an action adventure story. Filled with a "what next" adventure while giving the non-fiction back story on the inside workings of the Church of Scientology from the only man who could tell it. We are blessed that Mark/Marty is in a position and willing to share his story. I enjoyed and I learned and more than once had tears rolling down my cheeks. What more could I ask for?

And, for the record, it is shocking for anyone Scientologist or just interested human being to discover the depth of depravity within the church.

Honest reflections by a key former Scientologist

Memoirs of a Scientology Warrior is a MUST READ for any current or former members of Scientology. Marty Rathbun goes into detail concerning the major legal situations that confronted Scientology in the 70s and 80s. Many of us in Scientology were told to ignore what was going on and were fed a public relations line about what we should think about the dirty and dark activities of Scientology. In this book we get the facts from a key player. The book is also an honest reflection on Marty's many years in Scientology and, after time for examination, a clearer sense about L.Ron Hubbard, his life and technology. The information about LRH in his later years including his interview with one of the last people to live with LRH is page turning and enlightening.

Reported to be several times larger than Trump's, Crow's empire encompasses a mind-boggling array of warehouses, hotels, hospitals, residential developments, and more. The knottiness of the Crow story makes this of limited appeal to general readers, except perhaps where Crow's influence is strongest--Texas, Atlanta, and the entire South. However, comprehensive business collections will want to include this for singular case study value.

A flawed but potentially useful book for those with an interest in real estate or entrepreneurs.

Trammell Crow, Master Builder: The Story of America’s Largest Real Estate Empire, by Robert Sobel, gets mixed reviews. The late Texas real estate developer is certainly worthy of a biography and, to be sure, author Sobel provides a good overview of the maverick businessman. But in other ways this biography falls short, so prospective purchasers should be aware of the strengths and weaknesses.

Let’s start with the good parts. Trammell Crow (1914-2009) led a Horatio Alger life, and Sobel does a good job in establishing why he became a legend. For example, Sobel takes the reader through Crow’s impoverished early years; teenage work experiences during the Great Depression; night school training to become a certified public accountant; wartime service as a U.S. Navy fiscal control officer and, by age 33, his ventures into real estate. So you as a reader get to learn who Trammell Crow was, and the attributes that enabled him to develop a huge real estate empire.

Despite the above-noted accomplishments, there are three significant problems that permeate the book. For one thing, there are very few first person accounts from co-workers, competitors, lenders or investors. The lack of interviews, original quotes, or presence of outsiders who might offer a different perspective of events, make this book a different read. Likewise, the minimal amount of factual data or detailed analysis of any major project or episode produces a narrative that borders on the superficial. So while the reader learns a little bit about Crow’s involvement in (e.g.) the Dallas Market Center, the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco and the Peachtree Center in Atlanta, there’s very little meat on the bones.

What I regard as the third failure no doubt derives from the relationship of the author to the story. As was properly disclosed in the Introduction, the author was hired by The Winthrop Group to write this book. While the author was apparently promised independence with regards to his opinions, his work was nonetheless vetted by his employer and a four-person management committee at the Trammell Crow Company. So while these two highly regarded companies were no doubt vigilant regarding factual accuracy, could such an arrangement assure scholarly independence? That becomes a concern because, at least in my mind, the narrative almost seems to been written for company stakeholders or other interested parties. That may sound harsh, but that’s how I regard it.

Despite the disappointments, students of business and anyone with an interest in real estate or entrepreneurship might find this book to be a useful source of information. And some might enjoy it more than I did. Rating this book isn’t easy, but after considerable soul searching I will give it three stars.

Entertaining Read_Good for Young RE Professionals in Dallas

This book is a fun and easy read that provides an indepth background pertaining to the commercial real estate market progession throughout the 20th century US and especially Dallas, TX. It describes Trammell's non traditional approach and how the company evolved from a random assortment of non-connected LLC's into a corporate institutional player.

Great Summer Preview

I am using the 3rd-grade math minutes as a summer workbook for my son entering 3rd grade. Each worksheet has only a few problems; so it is not daunting when you look at the page. My son has a tendency to be overwhelmed when looking at a page filled with problems (even if they are easy). This lets us tackle a few problems a day with minimal stress. Also, it lets us review concepts that he has not gone over extensively in 2nd grade (mainly multiplication). Each page builds upon the others: fact families are reviewed in clusters, and pages get progressively harder.

Makes math more tolerable for the math-avoidant

These books are awesome for maintaining grade-level fluency. I used this specific one during summer vacation for my son, headed to 4th grade (somehow he had some blind-spots in the 3rd grade content). Once it became habit, it's even enjoyable for him! ;)

A great starting point ...

This workbook is a good addition to my home tutoring efforts. I start out each day with "a minute". It is a good indicator of what your child knows and what areas need work. My daughter actually likes this workbook and finds the problems fun to figure out.

About the Author

For years, designer Golden Krishna has been behind the scenes, solving technology problems for companies from startups to Fortune 50. He’s currently a Senior UX Designer at Zappos Labs, where he works in a small group dedicated to creating new, delightful experiences for Zappos. Previously, he worked at a Samsung innovation lab, designing and building the near future of consumer electronics. He began his career working at the world-renowned design consultancy Cooper in San Francisco.

A great $6 book

Make no mistake: This is a sermon. It's not a practical guide. It's not a set of concrete steps to improve. It's the author standing at a pulpit and railing at the evils of the day. The evils are real, and unpleasant. Every designer should read it. And, considering it can be read in about an hour, that's not asking much.

However, for an everyday geek, or programmer, who doesn't have machine learning tools or skills to implement the ideas here, this book is full of lots of "No", and very little "Yes". The author suggests a few tools which are "doing it right", but offers little concrete advice for curing the ills described. So, you're left with an hour or two worth of entertainment, and little more.

In short, this is a short little sermon, which was enjoyable. It's a 5 star book at $6, but a 3 star book at $16. Read it, or better still, find it on sale later. It can wait.

I'm glad I got a chance to review this book

I'm glad I got a chance to review this book. The premise is really incredible, I do think there will be a point where a lot of digital products will be seamless and will work without a screen BUT the book itself is not that good at delivering the right answers or at least interesting insights. Instead the author complains about the current paradigm for most of the book. He tries to be clever and visionary but instead he comes off as whiny and boring. I love the who No UI concept, I think it's very powerful, and as a product designer I was expecting to find some useful insight instead it's just a waste of time other than a few interesting parts. If there's anything positive about it it's that it made me want to actually learn big data and machine learning myself to make my own products and hopefully someday write a better version of this book with actual scenarios and real solutions.

Quick, Entertaining Read: Needs More Depth

"No Interface" is an entertaining and compelling polemic that I recommend to readers looking for a refreshingly contrarian take on User Experience. Is it good for purists? No. Is it a sound technical overview? Nope. Will it win awards for investigative journalism? Not hardly. It is however written humorously and sincerely and will engage you on a weekend or cross-Atlantic flight. I enjoy reading sour-puss takes on new media and this book fits the bill, with an exposition of idiotic case-studies and supporting snarky graphics. As a reasoned critique of industry trends, in line with "You are not a Gadget" and "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus", this book laments how great brains dedicate their life work to inane, but lucrative advertising platforms, when companies need to be more original and less derivative: service their customers and users more than their shareholders (not that the two are mutually exclusive). The criticism of apps and lop-sided paid market for them was right-on-the-money, not to mention the safety risks of distracted drivers and disappointment of ersatz socialization.

"No Interface" falls short of substance on SOLUTIONS as opposed to the many FAILURES that it categorizes and details in great, mocking detail. Where are all these great "no interfaces"? The examples cited are anemic except for maybe healthcare. Where is a recognition of the substantial technical barriers to rising above the ubiquitous UI itself? Throw more sensors on devices and latch onto the IoT? Another nitpick - glorifying Snowden as a champion of privacy is not only out-of-scope, but untruthful. His supposed revelations have empowered rogue and totalitarian nations more than anything else he "accomplished". Boo on that. Finally, light pollution correlated with cancer does not mean causation - a stretch.

On a final note, the book succeeds in opening a discussion (or argument) about the need to humanize technology and come up with a better business model in doing so. I'd read a serious (and seriously funny) follow-up if there's one planned.

A Great Starting Point

This book was an enjoyable read. If you're thinking about launching out on your own and don't know where to start then read this book.

It's not an all encompassing "how to" manual explaining the ins and outs of setting up and running a successful business (which would probably overwhelm you anyway) but it gives you a good and realistic overview of what you will need to get going.

Highly recommended to get you in the right mindset to get up and and get going with your new job escape plan.

I am quite motivated now and thankful for the "kick in the butt" to just take that leap of faith and start something already.

New author but great read!

This book is a must-read for those navigating the PA school application and interview process!

First, Paul breaks down the basic structure of the interview experience and the types of interviews you might encounter, both from the perspective of applicants and from those of the interviewers themselves. Having an idea about what to expect helps you feel more familiar with the process and much more comfortable going into interviews, which are nerve-wracking enough as is.

Second, his approach to tackling these interviews is unlike those of other PA interview books. Instead of instructing applicants to give the same set of answers to interview questions, his book really challenges you to consider your own unique story and share your genuine self at these interviews. Paul gives you the tools to work through the most important questions that you will be asked and provides numerous examples to illustrate his points. It definitely pays off - I was asked some of these core questions at nearly every PA school interview I attended, and overall I felt well prepared to discuss them. Lastly, not only does his book help in terms of interview content, but it also has excellent tips for how to practice for the interview. Through the methods he recommended, I was able to significantly improve my delivery, which can make a big difference to those listening to you.

This book is incredibly helpful for those at the last stage of a very competitive process. Of note, I also used Paul’s interview coaching services, which take the content of the book one step further and provide mock interviews/invaluable real-time feedback via Skype. I cannot recommend these services enough as I was able to gain acceptance into several excellent PA programs this cycle!

Very encouraging and unique approach with a lot of valuable information and great behind-the-scenes info

I’ve read several interview preparation books and I found this book to be unlike any other. This book offers a unique approach to the interview process where it shows you how to steer away from the rehearsed canned answers you might find in other books and encourages you to be yourself, and as the author put it, “let your freak flag fly.” It sounds like such a simple concept, but it’s easy to forget. I interviewed last year with the “canned answers” approach in mind and did not get accepted. I think not being unique and standing out enough had a huge impact on that. This year, if I’m invited to an interview, I will feel more confident being myself and I think with Paul’s approach I’ll be more relatable and unique. Also, his insight to the behind-the-scenes process from the faculty’s perspective is invaluable. Unlike other books, this one does not have 100’s of questions that might be asked. Instead it presents 10 of the most common interview questions. But his approach emphasizes quality over quantity. He teaches you what the interview committee is looking for in an interview answer in general, which you can apply to any question. For those, like myself, who are easily influenced by reading 100’s of other people’s answers, this book really encourages you to be yourself, and after all, that is what the interview is all about…..the committee wants to know what makes YOU tick. I’d definitely recommend this book and I wish this book had been available last year during my first round of interviews.

Too bad, because I was really excited about this purchase

If this was a $5 book I wouldn’t be so harsh, but at $20 it’s a rip-off. I was misled by all the 5-star reviews, but I myself don’t consider it 5-star quality. Too bad, because I was really excited about this purchase. Unfortunately, about 90% of what is in here is either basic common-sense or stuff you’ll find for free in various places online. I also felt kind of ripped off that in many places the kindle text links directly to his free blog. If you need every edge you can get, you will get some value, but you’d be better served by just reading his blog.

Too be fair, just because it isn’t a great or even good book doesn’t it mean that it has no useful information. The author has some quality information on the types of interviews you may see and how they will be structured. Also, I like how he stresses being yourself and not sounding memorized when you give your answers. He emphasizes not sounding desperate and seeming selective in what schools you will choose—I’ll be sure to utilize this and not present myself as someone who will settle for any school to take me. However, the 10 questions he has you prepare for are questions that anyone with any intelligence or common sense would know to prepare for, and the example answers he gives aren’t anything special. So overall this book has some useful information, but certainly not $20 worth.

Overuse of Sourced Material Bogs Down an American Yarn

I first discovered Harold Schechter with his series of engrossing books dedicated to serial killers. Deviant (Ed Geins), Depraved (H.H. Holmes), Deranged (Albert Fish) were three of the most fascinating, disturbing, goose bump inducing non-fiction books I have read. I recommend each very highly for the reader looking to scratch the morbid itch.

Unfortunately I cannot do the same for Man-Eater....

There was a spareness to those earlier works that really helped drive the abominable subject matter straight to the gut. Here, though the subject matter is at least on par with those titles, Mr. Schechter seems to have lost his narrative line a bit. Instead of storytelling we get reporting, instead of vivid images we get stilted accounts. While these are not necessarily problems in a work of non-fiction the tendency to repeat facts over and over and the penchant of dropping every single name even remotely associated with the crime makes for an unnecessarily weighty read.

The story told is that of Alfred G. Packer. A man who at times seems like a swindler, at others a compulsive liar, who poses as a guide to lead a band of prospectors through the Colorado Rockies during the winter of 1873. The group splits and after weeks of being lost in the blinding snow Packer emerges from the wilderness alone and none-the-worse for his ordeal. Immediately suspicions of the other survivors force a search to be made and the inevitable discovery of cannibalism is realized.

What follows is numerous re-tellings with little or no new information to justify the repetition. Perhaps because Packer himself changed his tune so many times and tried numerous attempts within his testimonies over several trials both formal and informal at a sort of insanity by hunger plea, some of this can be excused. But knowing Mr. Schechter's immense talents displayed in those other works, I felt time and again some of the later accounts could have been paraphrased considerably. Even unchanging witness testimonies at each trial are presented again and again until I felt as if I was re-reading earlier chapters by accident.

Perhaps if I was unfamiliar with Schechter I may not have been so confused by what seemed to be clumsy storytelling. Perhaps if I was a history student needing to know transcript level details of the trials I may have been more appreciative of Mr. Schechter's scrupulous use of source materials. Alas, I am just a reader who wanted to be fascinated by the dark tale with just enough historical accuracy to add to, not detract from the story. As it is, the book became a chore by the time Packer is given the opportunity to meet with reporter Polly Pry to recount for the umpteenth time his version of events.

Great, As Usual

Harold Schechter's work is characterized by lucid prose, exhaustive research, rich and vivid historical context, abundant anecdote, and a masterly gift for suspense. This book is no different in these respects, but it is also a departure from his other books, most of which focus on serial killers. This is the biography of one man who may or may not have committed an atrocious crime, as well as the chronicle of the waning years of the Old West. I highly recommend it. Then, when you are finished, read all of his others.

A non-stop read, puts you in the 19th century mountains and towns of Colorado following Alfred. The reader gets firsthand testimony of the crime and can decide if it happened the way Alfred Packer claimed or not.
As for my verdict, I fear I am still undecided. I can honestly see both sides to the story.
The facts are not presented in a gruesome way. Great story that will touch the reader. Enjoy.

Michael Cinquemani is a retired New York City school district administrator. NIGHT TIDES represents his first venture into a world that has fascinated him for years. His love for fishing on Long Island (New York) is reflected throughout the pages of his narrative.

Michael lives in Massapequa, NY and is married to Rosalie, his wife of thirty-five years. They have two adult children.

Night Tides

Forget about the fishing for a moment, understanding the type of dedication required to become just good at the sport of catching striped bass is one thing, the level by which the Greek operates in is one of a different zip code altogether.
I will say for those new to striper fishing and interested in pursuing the sport for the first time, the Greek certainly describes in detail the fish and conditions needed to achieve your goal. As for fisherman who are further along at the sport, the information is refreshing, reaffirming and insightful.
There is much good amusing and educational reading in Night Tides. I recommend it both for new and establised fisherman alike!

Striper Madness!

Michael G. Cinquemani's, Night Tides, featuring striped bass legend, Billy (The Greek) Legakis, is as unique as the relationship between the two men; that is, teacher and student with their roles reversed. Cinquemani, an English teacher at the time their friendship was formed three and a half decades ago, was accosted by a fourteen year old cocky kid who was willing to impart his knowledge of striped bass fishing in exchange for a long ride to the beach that his minibike and gear proved challenging.
"Hey! I seen you leave with a fishing rod a lot in the afternoon, but I never seen you come back with any fish. I'll make you a deal. You drive me over to the beach and I'll show you how to catch a bass .... No, really, it takes me twenty minutes on my bike just to get to the Monroe jetty--plus you try riding with a ten foot surf rod and a lure bag. And I got to limit my choices, which really cramps my style. With your car, as pathetic as that thing is ... we can really cover some territory. Really. I can even show a hopeless guy like you how to catch fish."
And so the rest is history, or more accurately, an accounting of life's lessons revealed through a spirited rapport. Billy, to this day, does not score scores or even hundreds of stripers a season; he takes thousands! A fish tale, you say? Not when you do the math! Not when you add The Greek's acumen and compulsion into the equation, for the man fishes twice a day, every day, for a 250 day striper season, equalling approximately 1800 hours. He fishes in any kind of weather, not excluding storms of the decades. He fishes from shore, boats and bridges. In following Cinquemani's vivid depiction of his friend's extraordinary feats, the reader is indeed awed by the audacious man's strength, agility and tenacity in targeting BIG bass; 40-50 pounds and over. Billy's single-minded goal in life? To break the current world's striper record. One of Michael's? To write that story of the century.

Fired Up

I just didn't want this book to end. It will definitely fire you up to go fishing. Because that's what the book is about -- the fire and dedication of Billy the Greek. Cinquemani really captures the all-important intangibles of striper fishing: the majesty and mystery of the fish themselves, and the drive and determination of those who are successful in catching them. It's not a how-to book per se; rather, as I said above, addresses the most important ingredient of success: the desire and persistence of those who pursue them. Billy does reveal the fundamentals, but he also shows you that just knowing them is not enough; you have to apply them, no matter how tough or how much time it takes. Anyone who calls himself or herself a striper fisherman will love this book.
