About the Author

Doris A. Graber is professor of political science at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has written and edited numerous articles and books on the media and public opinion, including Mass Media and American Politics, Eighth Edition, The Politics of News: The News of Politics, Second Edition, The Power of Communication: Managing Information in Public Organizations, and Processing Politics: Learning from Television in the Internet Age, which won the 2003 Goldsmith Book Prize. This award is given by the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Excellent survey reader.

Well-edited overview of complex field. I _ Robert A. Rankin (Jake Barnes is a nom de plume) _ use it in my Media & Politics course at Randolph-Macon College, where I'm an adjunct professor. I spent 30 years as a Washington journalist and hold two degrees in political science. This volume includes perspectives from both academics and practitioners. My only criticism is that it dropped several wonderful contributions from previous editions _ such as Walter Lippmann on the fallibilities of newspapers _ to make room for new ones, also good. Such is life. Excellent volume.

Tremendously Valuable

I purchased this book for a course I was taking in mass media and communications and was highly impressed the amalgamation of authors that the editor brought together. Being obviously designed for academia, the book is a collection of exerts from the works of top academics in the field. The thirty plus essays cover a wide variety of topics and perspectives, from questioning the citizen's ability to comprehend the information needed to make informed voting decisions, to questing the media's ability to offer the type of information needed to make those decisions in the first place. The book is simply invaluable.

I read this book accompanied by American Public Opinion, which established where Americans stand on a wide variety of issues. The two works read together will leave the readers radically enlightened on the mass media's past and contemporary effects of American politics.

Joan Didion doesn't want you to know this...

...but Run River is her finest novel. "Democracy" is excellent, but it is more a tour de force than a novel. Didion was only in her twenties when she wrote Run River, and it is a winner--stylish but never mannered (something you can't say about her subsequent novels), subdued, witty, assured, and filled with Valley (as in the Sacramento Valley) characters with whom Didion was rather obsessively in love. It is a pity that she seems more interested these days in writing about Washington insiders for N.Y.C./L.A. insiders. Everett McClellan, my favorite character in the book, would not have been able to sustain an interest in such figures as Henry Hyde and Kenneth Starr. That Didion can--even if only for the purpose of eviscerating them--is an indication of how far she has strayed from her literary roots. Ah, but what roots they were. Run River is an extraordinary achievement.

A Californian Elegy

This novel is early Didion, wonderfully lyrical and dark, passionate without sentimentality, and beyond conclusions. It is homage to James Jones, to William Faulkner, perhaps a little to John Steinbeck, but mostly to a California now almost vanished. That California is mostly the settlers' California, but it is also a California felt and known aboriginally. She writes, as always, poignantly about things dying away: but the heirs live on and the Californian sun and hills, rivers and floods, carry on- the part of eternity we can know a little of. I liked this book very much, but the reader should be warned it is not a light read and not written as completely in Joan Didion's famously sharp style as her later works.

As Good a First Novel as First Novels Get

This first novel by one of modern America's prose-writing treasures is set in a part of California no one associates with the Golden State: the Sacramento Delta. The emotional and physical geography of the book blend seamlessly. Didion has since critiqued this book herself, in her much later prose reflection on California, "Where I Was From." She's a bit hard on her former self. This is a lucid, hard etched short novel on the same general theme as Tolstoi's "Anna Karenina": that is, how a uniquely unhappy family got that way. Didion is of an old California family. She takes no false pride in that, here or elsewhere. There is not a useless or spongy sentence in the whole book. Writers will be reminded of what they're supposed to be doing when they pick up a pen.

About the Author
Mark Jeffery is the Director of Technology Initiatives and Senior Lecturer in the Center for Research in Technology and Innovation at the Kellogg School of Management. Lots of irrelevant talking but few useful instructions

This book is mainly talking about how important the data analysis is while containing little instruction about how to do it. It takes you forever to find the useful methods and approaches to implement the analysis. If you just want to read the story of the situation of the company before the data analysis is implemented and that after the data analysis is done, buy this book. If you want to learn how to do data analysis, find another book.

A good talk about data-driven marketing but operationally useless

I was a bit surprised to see so many 5 stars but eventually I found another 2 star reader among reviews and I totally agree with him.
At first you can be a bit fascinated about the author's talking about the importance of data in marketing and so many important case histories. I firstly read this book when I was still quite inexperienced about marketing and thought "wow this is a great book and finally something more quantitative!". But now after second and third reading and some another tenth of marketing books, I can say my first impression was really wrong. As the other 2-star reviewer said this book is useless. If your thinking, like mine, is that a data-driven marketing book should be operational and practical to be effective, expecially if your background is technical or scientific and "regression" is not a strange word for you, do not buy this book: you would be very disappointed.

As a Marketing executive, I can understand the challenges of fusing science and art when making daily marketing decisions. Mark has done an exceptional job at articulating simple, yet thoroughly explainable, solutions for achieving successful marketing metrics. He provides an exceptional foundation of mathematical methods in driving ROI, ROAS, profitability and retention.

Data-Driven Marketing accomplishes the one thing that is most critical when running a marketing organization: using data to drive profits. He stresses the critical relationships between business and IT and how, in concert, these two forces can truly revolutionize business results. Using enterprise customer, operational and transactional data in the 15 metrics are key. His book also points out the power of Voice of the Customer data and how its continued mining is important to driving marketing strategy. Another advantage of his metrics are their versatility: simply put...they are industry agnostic.

Mark also does more than just lay out case after case of why these metrics make sense for any marketer. He also interjects fun and humor during the process. This is an aspect any reader can enjoy.

Data-Driven Marketing is an absolute must-have for any marketer interested in good, solid, directional marketing analytics.

I loved reading Courting Her Rebel: (Taken by Cowboys: Part 2) A Billionaire Western Romance, all about Spencer & Nate the co-owners & business partners of Guest Ranch & Jessica a NYC girl looking for relaxation away from the hustle & bustle of city life. In part 1 she has an instant attraction to Spencer. In part 2 she's still very attracted to Spencer but is also very attracted to Nate! The author wrote an amazing story that is spanning thru all five parts, and the characters are bringing the story to life. Nate is very attracted to Jessica and is jealous of Spencer, and wants her bad! Read this book it will make you laugh, sigh, shake your head and cum! Enjoy reading about Guest Ranch. I can't wait to read part three. Come and read about the hot Cowboys at Guest Ranch, you won't be disappointed, I know I wasn't!
