This path-breaking study of gender, grassroots globalization, and neoliberalism in Bangladesh looks critically at the Grameen Bank and three of the leading NGOs in the country. Amid euphoria over the benefits of microfinance, Lamia Karim offers a timely and sobering perspective on the practical, and possibly detrimental, realities for poor women inducted into microfinance operations.
In a series of ethnographic cases, Karim shows how NGOs use social codes of honor and shame to shape the conduct of women and to further an agenda of capitalist expansion. These unwritten policies subordinate poor women to multiple levels of debt that often lead to increased violence at the household and community levels, thereby weakening women’s ability to resist the onslaught of market forces.
A compelling critique of the relationship between powerful NGOs and the financially strapped women beholden to them for capital, this book cautions us to be vigilant about the social realities within which women and loans circulate—realities that often have adverse effects on the lives of the very women these operations are meant to help.

Best Book on Microfinance

This is groundbreaking work. It reveals that underneath all the hype and cheerleading for microfinance, there is a different, and less hopeful, story. This book is set in the home country of Mohammed Yunus, who received the Nobel Peace Prize, along with his Grameen Bank, for developing microfinance. Karim shows that microfinance in Bangladesh has really served mainly as a way for those who run microfinance institutions to make money and status, while the women who are supposed to be served have found increasing negative pressures on their time and meager resources. Microfinance, rather than helping women, has only reinforced the patriarchal social structures in Bangladesh, leaving women with even more obligations than before and making no real dent in poverty. It's no wonder that Yunus' legacy is being challenged today in Bangladesh. If you want to know about microfinance, buy this book!

The stories of these women's lives will haunt you.

This is an incredible book written for a scholarly audience but accessible and quite powerful for those of us who aren't in the world of academia. Despite her research orientation, the author (full disclosure: a college friend of mine a long time ago) cannot help but use a few choice exclamation marks when the subject calls for it--like the story of the single mother of a toddler whose house was literally dissembled before her eyes and all her belongings carted away to settle a loan with a balance of just over $2. Karim learns the truth because she speaks the language and knows the terrain since as a native of Bangladesh and Pakistan. Microfinance was meant to inspire women's empowerment but instead harms women, with high interest, often unaffordable loans usually controlled by male family members,and collection procedures from Hell.NGOs promoting these loans should be ashamed; instead they are awarded the Nobel Prize.This is an important book and honestly I could not put it down.

A Must Read

As a long time proponent of microfinance, I was very skeptical about this book. I had to read the first 3 chapters for school, but ended up reading the whole book. The book provides a difficult yet realistic aspect of microfinance in a country where NGOs have taken on the role of local governance. The author, having carried out her research in Bangladesh, exposed the "other side" of microfinance that we often do not hear of through different narratives, many of which are disturbingly true. If you're interested in international development, microfinance or women development, this book is a must read! Highly recommended.

An impressive work

As an amateur history buff, I found this to be an amazing work. I had been looking for a history of how the Native American federations had inspired the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and I was not disappointed. While Sidis seems to take a pro Native American approach, he is very complete in his expositions. There are no citations to show his sources, but the few things I checked up on seem to pan out. His explanation of the differences between the New England, Mid-Atlantic and Southern States resonates in a very meaningful way, increasing my understanding of the history of the U.S., and how that history continues to play out in today's politics. For example, his point that our Constitutional form of government was meant to undermine democracy is clearly reflected in the 2016 controversy over how delegates are selected in the Presidential primaries, often undermining the will of the voters in favor of party-selected "representatives." Also, the distinction between proponents of "States rights" and those of "individual rights" is still very much alive.
I also appreciated the clarity and intelligence of his writing.
What I learned from William Sidis will stay with me, and I'm sure I will return to this fascinating work many times.

Native American influences on the founding principals of the American Revolution.

Sidis' unusual take on American history shakes the usual view by drawing correspondences from Native American federations to the forms out of which the various and very different constitutions of the states were envisioned. He draws clear distinctions in the use of words like federation, democracy, republic, monarchy, freedom and liberty, all keystones of the philosophy of governments that has come from the American revolution and its influence on European history. Sidis ties in a fair amount of detail about the "Cincinnati Conspiracy". Very interesting take, especially for someone somewhat versed from the usual versions.

Cambridge English Advanced is good preparation for the CAE test, taking into account that it has full tests and explanations about which criteria are adopted by Cambridge to correct the exam. There are, however, two problems. First, it does not provide an example of the sheet used in the writing part. Second, there are only four tests available.

Brian L. Weiss, MD, a graduate of Columbia University and Yale Medical School, is Chairman Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami. Have it in English and bought for an acutance in Spanish......this was required reading at a sociology class that I took....if you are searching for answers to divine questions, this book may answer some or make wonder more......a very well documented case from a reliable source.
Este libro en ingles tiene el nombre de "many lives, many masters".....puede poceer repuestas sobre preguntas divinas, este caso fue muy bien documentado por un doctor en siquiatria.

A book that opens our minds

Granted, ultimately it is all a matter of faith and most times the ideas we believe in were put there by our parents, teachers, priests, etc. We grew up with them and we accept them as a natural part of our lives. But what if....?
That's when books like this one show us there are other ways of understanding our selves, of answering the doubts we may have, even when we do not ask them out loud, of looking at life and death. And the very least we get is a glance at another way of solving some of our existential problems. Plus it is interesting, and entertaining.
So I believe this is a great book.

I read the english version of this book, really liked it. Changes the way you think of things, sometimes I don't believe what it says since I need to experience to believe it but then again with science anything is possible. I bought the spanish version for my grandmother thats really interested in these topics too.

About the Author
Nicolai Lilin was born in 1981 and grew up in the small republic of Transnistria, which declared its independence in 1990 but has never been recognised. Nicolai left home to fight in the Russian army against the Chechens. He later lived in Ireland, before moving to Italy, where he continues to work as a tattooist. Siberian Education was a major bestseller in Lilin's home country of Italy and was published in the UK in May 2010 to critical acclaim. The author lives in Turin.

Really bad fiction?

I was interested in this book as it purports to tell the story of a trained sniper working in Chechnya, and there have been excellent accounts of expert snipers operating in Russian forces during WWII. I found it difficult to believe anything in the book. Other reviewers have commented on the complete lack of detail in terms of missing place names, but I had bigger problems with the book. According to his account, he went directly into a 'special forces unit' called the Saboteurs, (can't find anything on this unit) rather than serving with any line unit before applying to SF. These Saboteur chappies apparently don't wear uniform but walk around in civvies, with many specially sown-on pockets. Bit of a risk if you think of the provisions of the Geneva Convention. They also don't appear to do much saboteuring. And he did not receive any specialist training in sniping - a skill which the Russians have espoused for years at the unit and tactical level, but apparently he was able to cover off 'coz he'd shot a bit in his youth. There is not much actual sniping - most of the time, he and his buddies are operating as infantry (again hard to reconcile with an SF role). The actual details of what sniping there is, are risible - for a skill which in most armed forces requires many weeks of skilled training, he seems to just go with the 'point-and-shoot' approach. Maybe he thinks the sniper rifle is a camera. Great for a laugh, but if you want to read something sensible, go for books on Zaitsev, or Hayha. A disturbing trend in bad fiction masquerading as fact.

Remarque he ain't, dear Lilin

I got this book because I wanted to get a perspective of the Russian style of combat, which I thought I needed after reading a bunch of books about UK and US troops in Iraq.
Only after I started reading I found out that it's not a memoir but rather based on Lilin's and his buddies' old 'army tales'.
At first I wanted to stop reading and throw the book away, but then I thought about other similar books, most notably Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front which is a work of fiction written by a veteran.
I thought that if they could produce good books about war without being 100% accurate eyewitness accounts, maybe so could Lilin.
So with that mindset I kept reading, and I don't regret it. While Lilin is no Remarque and Free Fall will not be a classic I still enjoyed it. But then again, I'm known to enjoy -and tell- the odd army tale now and then and know to expect some embellishment and deviations from the bare naked truth. And in that light, Lilin has written a good book.

A final note, as others here have said, the translation is horrible at places. But as long as you keep that in mind and 'compensate' for it you'll have a good read if you enjoy these kind of books.

Fact or Fiction

I have a great interest in the conflict in Chechnya so it was with pleasure that I picked this book up. It wasn't long before I started to doubt the truth of what I was reading, this soon turned to an almost certain view that what I was reading was more fiction than fact. Unfortunately the book is not well written at all as well as lacking a convincing narrative so any enjoyment from a reading as an action adventure novel is muted. The reason that I primarily doubt the truthfulness of this book is its divergence from any other accounts I have read of the war, the lack of dates and place names compounds this. The descriptions of battle read like a boys own adventure full of heroics and macho posturing but really lacking convincing reality. Compared to a good soldiers account such as 'One Soldier's War' by A. Babchenko and N. Allen this book just doesn't add up. It is a pity but I cannot recommend this.
