About the Author
Swami Lakshmanjoo was the last in an unbroken line of Kashmir Shaiva masters. As a boy his life was filled with a spiritual thirst to know and realize God. From a very early age he was filled with spiritual experiences. In fact these experiences were so intense that his parents thought he was suffering from hysteria. They were very concerned and approached their family guru, Swamiji’s grand master Swami Ram, requesting him to help their son with his hysteria. Swami Ram laughed and said to them, “Don’t worry, I should have such a disorder.” As Swamiji grew older his desire to completely realize and apprehend the world of spirituality became paramount. To make this a reality he sat at the feet of his guru Swami Mahatabakak and took up the study and practice of Kashmir Shaivism. He became completely engrossed and enthralled in his spirituality, wholeheartedly practicing day and night, ultimately experiencing the fullness of Kashmir Shaiva realization. It is to his beloved Kashmir Shaivism that he devoted the whole of his life, teaching it to those who asked and translating and commenting on what he considered to be the most important texts of this system. He became renowned as a philosopher saint steeped in the tradition of Kashmir Shaivism. With the growing interest in Kashmir Shaivism over the last thirty years, hardly any publication has appeared without a mention of Swami Lakshmanjoo’s contribution to this unique philosophy.

Good interviewing skills are essential for freelance writers. Ken Metzler's book, Creative Interviewing: The Writer's Guide to Gathering Information by Asking Questions, is an excellent source for learning how to conduct an interview and improving your interviewing techniques.

Did you know that most interviews happen in ten stages? Mr. Metzler explains, "Face-to-Face interviews usually, though not always, run through ten stages. Four stages occur before you even meet your respondent. The success of the six subsequent ones depends largely on how well you accomplish the first four."

Do you know what the ten interview stages are? Here's the list from Creating Interviewing:

Required reading for serious journalism students

This book shows you how to conduct just about every type of interview. It also explains concepts, helps the journalist devise a plan and more importantly provides key information on how to cope with the "difficult interview." In my opinion, "The Writer's Guide to Gathering Information by Asking Questions: Creatinve Interviewing," by Ken Metzler should be required reading for serious journalism students everywhere.
"The need for interviewing skills is by no means confined to newspaper writers," according to the author. And I agree. The corporate world is always interviewing...they are always on the look for new talent. In many cases, they need to be better than simply ask, "where do you want to be in five years."
Believe or not there truly are many typical errors you want to avoid when interviewing. To this end, you will find a healthy discussion on how to avoid mistakes here. Moreover, this book will help you navigate the tricky interview process. Chapters two and three are terrific. Chapter two outlines the ten stages of the interview. And chapter three covers the conversational dynamics of interviewing. This book even includes a chapter on interviewing excercises.
All in all this book is a valuable tool for everyone interested in making journalism a profession. The gathering of information in journalism is primarily done by oral means. Not Resnick's best effort

I have been a Resnick fan from the early / mid '80ies, and was prepared for a 'classic Resnick' with a grand scale setting, heroes and villains fast paced with quirky twist and turns. The story is not bad, however it reads dated (published first time 1990) and the characters are a little too superficial for my liking.

The premise and idea is fine, however the execution is at best passable.

This book is what I would call 'airport fare', buy it just before you board the plane, read while flying and be done before you land.

Suspenseful Thriller with a Sci-Fi Premise.

Second Contact by Mike Resnick has a fascinating premise: A space captain on trial for murdering his own crewmen because he believed they were aliens. After that's set up, the rest of the novel reads more like a contemporary political thriller than science fiction, as Becker, the officer assigned to defend the Captain, runs into dead ends with disappearing witnesses. Pursuing every lead with the help of a computer whiz, Becker incurs the wrath of a conspiracy that seems to involve aliens, like something you'd see on the X-Files or The Invaders. The computer technology described probably seemed futuristic when this was written, but seems ordinary now, though the story is still set about 50 years in the future from now. The suspense kept the pages turning. In the end everything is explained and mostly wrapped up.

Harvard cognitive psychologist Kagan adds a new twist to the nature-nurture controversy in this challenging academic study. Second-century Greek physician Galen posited innate, distinct human temperaments--melancholy, sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic--thought to result from imbalances in bodily humors. Carl Jung carried forward Galen's ideas by asserting that people are born as introverts or extroverts. Though the concept of inherited personality has fallen out of favor, research studies done during the last 15 years by Kagan and others reveal that an infant's fearful or relaxed reaction to novel stimuli is a predictor of whether that child will develop into a sensitive, introverted or a bold, outgoing adult. Kagan believes we each inherit unique neurochemistries that predispose us to becoming inhibited or uninhibited types. He offers tantalizing speculations on how innate temperaments might affect vocational and marital choices, criminality, ethical stances, psychopathology and parenting.

Kagan, one of the world's eminent developmental psychologists, has argued for several decades that human nature is not infinitely malleable. In this book he discusses a project he has led for the past 15 years involving the study of toddlers who demonstrated two temperamental extremes: the inhibited (shy and withdrawn) and the uninhibited (placid and outgoing). Kagan's research uncovered a significant pattern of behavioral and physiological differences distinguishing these two groups from earliest infancy and found that these traits tend to persist at least into early adolescence. He includes a history of the idea of temperament and discusses the political implications of his work. This book is a vital purchase for all academic libraries supporting courses in developmental or personality psychology. Public libraries can probably make do with Kagan's earlier book, The Nature of the Child (LJ 9/15/84), which covers the research in less detail.

A perceptive look at changing ideas about temperament, plus some strong opinions about the implications of current concepts. A research-oriented psychologist, Kagan (Harvard; Unstable Ideas, 1989) begins with the view of Galen, a second-century physician, that temperament is linked to an excess of one of the four bodily humors--black bile, blood, yellow bile, and phlegm. That temperament had a biological basis was a popular concept until the end of the 19th century, when it came into conflict with the egalitarian notion that all human beings are equipped with essentially similar psychological qualities. In the second half of the 20th century, research with young children led to new ideas about the influence of biology on temperament. Kagan looks at some of this research and questions its reliance on parents' responses to questions about their children's emotions and behaviors. He describes in considerable detail his own 15 years of research into the physiology of inhibited and uninhibited children: In studying hundreds of children, he found that two- thirds of infants who at four months were highly reactive to various auditory, visual, and olfactory stimuli developed into shy, timid toddlers, and two-thirds of minimally reactive infants became sociable and outgoing. In his final chapters, Kagan ponders the implications of his findings, arguing strongly that the existence of inborn temperamental biases does not excuse asocial behavior. Free will, he insists, is not undermined by temperament, and though we may not be able to control our emotions, we can control our actions. Temperament is real.

For we folks who feel that we are born "a blank slate", that our ability to live is mainly learned from our environment, Kagan will show how wrong we are. The inborn genetic influence with which we enter this world determines how we act, think, work, and relate to others throughout our lives, despite current thinking that training and experience from birth are all important.

Good News for Introverts

Galen's Prophecy was a stretch for my intellect; it is, afterall, a presentation of scientific research. However, when it was written (early to mid-1990's), it was cutting-edge research in temperament. At the time, I was desperate for answers about the agonies of anxiety and shyness that colored my childhood and followed me into adulthood. It was personally liberating to read Kagan's solid evidence that we are born with our temperamental tendencies. In our culture, where extroversion is desired and rewarded, it's easy for we introverts to feel inadequate or flawed. Kagan's research has paved the way for newer books on shyness and tempereament written for the lay person. Extroverts may never understand the debt of gratitude we introverts owe to Dr. Kagan.
