Beginners only

This book provides a good introduction to Japanese grammar for the beginner and there are plenty of usage examples. However, due to its small size some points are not explained in enough detail and in other areas you are expected to understand the grammar points through examples alone. I would not recommend this to intermediate or advanced level students, but for the beginner it provides a very good starting point due to its clear layout and uncomplicated explanations.

Stellar reference book

This is a stellar little reference book. Clear, to the point, and with very easy to understand examples.

It does a wonderful job comparing Japanese grammar with English grammar, which allowed me to immediately put the ideas into a context I could understand and build upon.

The Japanese words and phrases are written in romaji, which, for someone like me, is critical. I have only just begun to learn Japanese, and have barely tackled hiragana and kana, never mind kanji! With romaji, I can get the full impact of the grammar lesson without having to struggle with Japanese characters, too. THAT is a DIFFERENT lesson! :)

There is some vocabulary, and some tips on conversational usage, but it does remain focused on Japanese sentence structures, parts of speech, and verb tenses.

It is a surprisingly in-depth and indispensable reference book.

Great Concise Grammar Book

Japanese Grammar (Barron's Grammar Series) This is a great little book, very concise and small in size - it can fit in your pocket. Very well laid out with color headings. Great for the beginner, gives concise coverage of pronunciation, writing systems, word order, nouns, pronouns, particles, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and special topics. The best book I have seen for the beginner. I bought several other books, but this is the only one I use, in addition to a good dictionary -recommend Langensheidt Pocket Dictionary Japanese. Also, you need another book that gives sample use of words and sentence structure.

like a narcotic!

Somebody should make an opera of this book! I've loved this book since high school, perhaps more than all the others! Genet as always is like a dark narcotic; impossible to shake, and constantly ecstatic. His genius is like a kind of suffocating honey on the page, it pulls your heart out. This edition has a substantive Introduction by Sartre, whose "Saint Genet" is one of the seminal books of the late twentieth century. If you've never read Genet, you've got something coming! What is there to say about literature of this standing? Read it and be ennobled.

An unparalleled literary masterpiece

Although I first came across Genet reading "The Thief's Journal", I believe this to be his greatest work (if not the greatest work of modern fiction, better than "Ulysses"). His writing lyrically flows and gives the work an organic unity. No other work, except "Swann's Way" by Proust, has the creative control and beautiful images Genet infuses in his work. A recommended read for all people. A shimmeringly beautiful work of fiction which makes the underworld and the sexual outlaw sublime. (Also, I'd recommend "City of Night" by John Rechy.)

fantastic, but not for everyone

Jean Genet's seminal novel "Our Lady of the Flowers" is a glorious celebration of transvestites, lowlifes, prostitutes and murderers in the underworld of 1940s Paris. Our narrator, Jean, who may or may not be Genet himself, regales the reader from prison with stories he's created about fellow inmates between fits of furious masturbation.

The story begins with the death of Divine, a notorious drag queen and inmate of Jeans. From there Jean goes into the story of the recently canonized Divine, from "her" beginnings as the boy Culafroy to her living in an apartment overlooking the french cemetery Montmartre with her pimp Darling, and a young boy dubbed "Our Lady of the Flowers", whom recently committed a murder.

Our Lady is a brilliant exploration of the darker side of life. But naturally, a novel based around a perverted narrator inventing lives for people in order to help him masturbate isnt exactly for everyone. Id call it a healthy mix of Celine's stylistic sensibilities with Battaile's sexual overtones. An early influence on writers like Bukowski. And the 30 page, raving endorsement from Sartre in the preface should entice the existentialist crowd. So, give it a shot. You'll either be a little grossed out or particularly enthralled.

About the Author

Rebecca Kirby, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC

Rebecca Kirby is a charter Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and started the first residency-training program in that specialty. Her articles, textbooks, and clinical research have advanced the veterinary profession and inspired students. She has lectured in over 24 countries and won recognition as Speaker of the Year at the North American Veterinary Conference. Her awards include 2001 Veterinarian of the Year by the AAHA, 2003 Ira Zaslow Distinguished Service Award from the VECCS, and 2005 Hills Award for Excellence in Veterinary Medicine awarded by the WSVA. She is also a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Elke Rudloff, DVM, DACVECC

Elke Rudloff is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. She has trained 25 ACVECC Diplomates and is currently a clinical instructor at the Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists in Wisconsin. She serves as the IVECCS Program Coordinator. She is the 2008 recipient of the Ira Zaslow Award for distinguished service in the field of veterinary emergency and critical care and is an internationally recognized educator in the field of veterinary emergency and critical care. Her special interests include fluid resuscitation, emergency surgery, and trauma management, topics on which she has published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.

Andrew Linklater, DVM, DACVECC

Originally from Canada, Andrew Linklater moved to the US to pursue advanced veterinary training; he is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. He has been actively involved in mentoring critical care interns and residents for over a decade and works at Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists in Wisconsin, where he oversees the management of critically ill and injured patients and performs advanced diagnostics and therapeutics. He is well-published in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks in the field of critical care and continues to lecture nationally and internationally.

Until recurring headaches drove her to seek medical help. "Sorry, we can't find any tumors," they said. "However, you are going blind. Oh yes, it's incurable, irreversible, and hereditary." She was twenty-three.

She bore a second child, a son. He would probably go blind, too. That made her mad and changed her life. No, by God, he wouldn't go blind!

This is the true story of Grace Halloran, a survivor, a person who gets things done against all odds. She tells how she, a blind mother, raised her son. She recounts the step-by-step process of intuition and serendipity that led to her developing unorthodox therapies which finally reversed her irreversible disease and reversed it in others, as well! What? The official scientific/medical commuity was incensed. How dare she!

She tells about her growing reputation. She gave classes. People from all over the world came to her, and she went all over the world. Her stories of helping people to see again are poignant. One thing is clear: she loves these people. She cares, and passionately.

But when she founded the Center for Eye Health Education in northern California, that was too much for the scientific/medical community. Who did this woman think she was? Reversing the irreversible! Political pressure led to the cancellation of the $100,000 grant from the State of California. The Center folded. But Grace didn't.

Amazing Grace is the powerful story of one woman's courage and fierce determination to save her son and herself from blindness. Full of fun and gritty reality, it is an inspiring account of what determination in the face of overwhelming odds can do. It is also a story of personal triumph over helter-skelter beginnings, even to the final pages, when Grace discovers what happened to the daughter who was wrested from her and put up for adoption over twenty years before.

Grace Halloran is an unstoppable woman!

Her early years, however, hardly foreshadowed what she was later to become. She was a military brat, an angry street-kid; rebellious, unsettled; a high-school dropout. By the time she reached eighteen, she was in Federal prison.

Today, she has become known internationally through her lecturers and seminars on eye health. Her unorthodox views and methods for improving eyesight have revolutionized the lives of people worldwide who are afflicted with the incurable, degenerative eye disease Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP).

Two major events brought focus to Grace's adult life. One was when her newborn daughter was taken from her and put up for adoption, as a condition of her parole. The other was her being informed, in her early twenties, that she and her young son were going blind from RP. Though she was told nothing could be done--the disease was known to be irreversible--Grace simply didn't believe it.

Determined to do what everyone said was impossible, she undertook a long-range process of informal study and experiment which led to her celebrated program of eye health, improved vision for many to whom the medical community offered no hope, and the founding of her nonprofit Center for Eye Health Education in Northern California. Her inspiring new autobiography, Amazing Grace, has drawn widespread praise, including enthusiastic endorsement from Willie Brown, Speaker of the California Assembly (whom she helped with his career-threatening vision problems).

But in keeping with the flavor of her whole life, none of Grace's accomplishments came easily. (Much of Amazing Grace was written while she sat in front of a computer screen that displayed her words in huge, oversize type she could see with her reduced vision. While she was writing it, she took a fall down some stairs in a Los Angeles apartment and broke her back. And she has recently battled life-threatening health problems, apparently the result of her having been in Sweden lecturing when the Chernobyl nuclear reactor blew up.)

Grace Halloran lives near San Francisco. Her son is married and recently reenlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Her daughter is married and has two children.
