Man-Eater: The Life and Legend of an American Cannibal, by Harold Schechter

In the winter of 1873, a small band of prospectors lost their way in the frozen wilderness of the Colorado Rockies. Months later, when the snow finally melted, only one of them emerged. His name was Alfred G. Packer, though he would soon become infamous throughout the country under a different name: "the Man-Eater."

After the butchered remains of his five traveling companions were discovered in a secluded valley by the Gunnison River, Packer vanished for nine years, becoming the West's most wanted man. What followed was a saga of evasion and retribution as the trial of the century worked to extricate fact from myth and Polly Pry, a once-famed pioneering journalist, took on the cause of Packer. Man-Eater is the definitive story of a legendary crime - a gripping tale of unspeakable suffering, the desperate struggle for survival, and the fight to uncover the truth.

Overuse of Sourced Material Bogs Down an American Yarn
By Danny Norbury
I first discovered Harold Schechter with his series of engrossing books dedicated to serial killers. Deviant (Ed Geins), Depraved (H.H. Holmes), Deranged (Albert Fish) were three of the most fascinating, disturbing, goose bump inducing non-fiction books I have read. I recommend each very highly for the reader looking to scratch the morbid itch.

Unfortunately I cannot do the same for Man-Eater....

There was a spareness to those earlier works that really helped drive the abominable subject matter straight to the gut. Here, though the subject matter is at least on par with those titles, Mr. Schechter seems to have lost his narrative line a bit. Instead of storytelling we get reporting, instead of vivid images we get stilted accounts. While these are not necessarily problems in a work of non-fiction the tendency to repeat facts over and over and the penchant of dropping every single name even remotely associated with the crime makes for an unnecessarily weighty read.

The story told is that of Alfred G. Packer. A man who at times seems like a swindler, at others a compulsive liar, who poses as a guide to lead a band of prospectors through the Colorado Rockies during the winter of 1873. The group splits and after weeks of being lost in the blinding snow Packer emerges from the wilderness alone and none-the-worse for his ordeal. Immediately suspicions of the other survivors force a search to be made and the inevitable discovery of cannibalism is realized.

What follows is numerous re-tellings with little or no new information to justify the repetition. Perhaps because Packer himself changed his tune so many times and tried numerous attempts within his testimonies over several trials both formal and informal at a sort of insanity by hunger plea, some of this can be excused. But knowing Mr. Schechter's immense talents displayed in those other works, I felt time and again some of the later accounts could have been paraphrased considerably. Even unchanging witness testimonies at each trial are presented again and again until I felt as if I was re-reading earlier chapters by accident.

Perhaps if I was unfamiliar with Schechter I may not have been so confused by what seemed to be clumsy storytelling. Perhaps if I was a history student needing to know transcript level details of the trials I may have been more appreciative of Mr. Schechter's scrupulous use of source materials. Alas, I am just a reader who wanted to be fascinated by the dark tale with just enough historical accuracy to add to, not detract from the story. As it is, the book became a chore by the time Packer is given the opportunity to meet with reporter Polly Pry to recount for the umpteenth time his version of events.

Great, As Usual
By Trumbo123
Harold Schechter's work is characterized by lucid prose, exhaustive research, rich and vivid historical context, abundant anecdote, and a masterly gift for suspense. This book is no different in these respects, but it is also a departure from his other books, most of which focus on serial killers. This is the biography of one man who may or may not have committed an atrocious crime, as well as the chronicle of the waning years of the Old West. I highly recommend it. Then, when you are finished, read all of his others.

Ladies And Gentlemen Of The Jury, Have You Reached A Verdict?
By J. B. Cowan
A non-stop read, puts you in the 19th century mountains and towns of Colorado following Alfred. The reader gets firsthand testimony of the crime and can decide if it happened the way Alfred Packer claimed or not.
As for my verdict, I fear I am still undecided. I can honestly see both sides to the story.
The facts are not presented in a gruesome way. Great story that will touch the reader. Enjoy.

Night Tides
By A Customer
Forget about the fishing for a moment, understanding the type of dedication required to become just good at the sport of catching striped bass is one thing, the level by which the Greek operates in is one of a different zip code altogether.
I will say for those new to striper fishing and interested in pursuing the sport for the first time, the Greek certainly describes in detail the fish and conditions needed to achieve your goal. As for fisherman who are further along at the sport, the information is refreshing, reaffirming and insightful.
There is much good amusing and educational reading in Night Tides. I recommend it both for new and establised fisherman alike!

Striper Madness!
By D. Derasmo
Michael G. Cinquemani's, Night Tides, featuring striped bass legend, Billy (The Greek) Legakis, is as unique as the relationship between the two men; that is, teacher and student with their roles reversed. Cinquemani, an English teacher at the time their friendship was formed three and a half decades ago, was accosted by a fourteen year old cocky kid who was willing to impart his knowledge of striped bass fishing in exchange for a long ride to the beach that his minibike and gear proved challenging.
"Hey! I seen you leave with a fishing rod a lot in the afternoon, but I never seen you come back with any fish. I'll make you a deal. You drive me over to the beach and I'll show you how to catch a bass .... No, really, it takes me twenty minutes on my bike just to get to the Monroe jetty--plus you try riding with a ten foot surf rod and a lure bag. And I got to limit my choices, which really cramps my style. With your car, as pathetic as that thing is ... we can really cover some territory. Really. I can even show a hopeless guy like you how to catch fish."
And so the rest is history, or more accurately, an accounting of life's lessons revealed through a spirited rapport. Billy, to this day, does not score scores or even hundreds of stripers a season; he takes thousands! A fish tale, you say? Not when you do the math! Not when you add The Greek's acumen and compulsion into the equation, for the man fishes twice a day, every day, for a 250 day striper season, equalling approximately 1800 hours. He fishes in any kind of weather, not excluding storms of the decades. He fishes from shore, boats and bridges. In following Cinquemani's vivid depiction of his friend's extraordinary feats, the reader is indeed awed by the audacious man's strength, agility and tenacity in targeting BIG bass; 40-50 pounds and over. Billy's single-minded goal in life? To break the current world's striper record. One of Michael's? To write that story of the century.

Fired Up
By A Fellow Fisherman
I just didn't want this book to end. It will definitely fire you up to go fishing. Because that's what the book is about -- the fire and dedication of Billy the Greek. Cinquemani really captures the all-important intangibles of striper fishing: the majesty and mystery of the fish themselves, and the drive and determination of those who are successful in catching them. It's not a how-to book per se; rather, as I said above, addresses the most important ingredient of success: the desire and persistence of those who pursue them. Billy does reveal the fundamentals, but he also shows you that just knowing them is not enough; you have to apply them, no matter how tough or how much time it takes. Anyone who calls himself or herself a striper fisherman will love this book.

Philip IV is dead and his great kingdom is in disarray. It seems the fatal curse of the Templars is plaguing the royal house of France.

His son has been enthroned as Louis X; but with his disgraced wife Marguerite imprisoned in the Chateau Gaillard for her adultery, Louis can produce no heir with which to secure the succession. But neither can he marry again while she lives…

The web of scandal, murder and intrigue that once wove itself around the court of the Iron King continues to draw in his descendants, as the destruction of his dynasty continues apace.

‘Iron kings and strangled queens, battles and betrayals, lies and lust, the curse of the Templars, the doom of a great dynasty – and all of it (well, most of it) straight from the pages of history, and believe me, the Starks and the Lannisters have nothing on the Capets and Plantagenets. Whether you are a history buff or a fantasy fan, Druon's epic will keep you turning pages. This was the original game of thrones’ George R.R. Martin

‘Blood-curdling tale of intrigue, murder, corruption and sexual passion’ The Sunday Times

‘Dramatic and colourful as a Dumas romance but stiffened by historical accuracy and political insight’ The Sunday Times

‘Barbaric, sensual, teeming with life, based in wide reading and sound scholarship…among the best historical novels’ The Times Literary Supplement

Superb Historical-Adventure Romance
By The Yuletide Kid
I will not endeavor to summarize Maurice Druon's THE ACCURST KINGS series. Suffice to say that the six volumes taken as a group challenge the likes of Leo Tolstoy's WAR AND PEACE. When Druon wrote the final page of the final book he put down his pen and wept with an odd mix of relief and loss. If you read these books you will understand why. Druon not only drew on an incredible number of obscure and fascinating historical sources but brought all to life with a slashing style that is most rare. For instance, Druon can say in five or six sentences what most other writers need a page or two to relate. I found myself stopping and rereading huge hunks of this six-volume masterpiece with always the same question: How did he say that so wonderfully in so short a space? Every character in the books is alive and vibrant, be they the noblest of the good and the vilest of the bad. That these books are out-of-print is a crime of the highest order. There is no excuse for such folly.

A feast of history
By Moni
One of the seven in the series "The Accursed Kings", "The Strangled Queen" is the story of Marguerite of Burgundy, the ill fated wife of Louis X of France. Incredible historical accuracy, attention to detail and high literary form make this novel more than good reading, like all the other in the series. If you can find all seven, by all means, get them!

I learnt so much!
By sally tarbox
This, the second of Druon's 'Accursed Kings' series opens in 1314; Philip the Fair has just died, succeeded by Louis the Stubborn.
The adulterous wives of Louis and his brother, still languishing in prison for their crimes, hope that now they may be freed...
Enguerrand de Marigny, Philip's first minister, realises he may not enjoy the favor of the new king...
And again we meet handsome Lombard banker, Guccio Baglioni, whose firm helps bankroll the Exchequer. And of course the larger-than-life Robert of Artois...
Perhaps not QUITE as enthralling as the previous book (the Iron King) but very enjoyable

Confining Spaces, Resistant Subjectivities: Toward a Metachronous Discourse of Literary Mapping and Transformation in Postcolonial Women's

This book represents a significant contribution to academic knowledge, making a compelling case for a contemporary analytical re-reading of a number of "core" postcolonial women's narratives, such as Erna Brodber's Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home, Buchi Emecheta's The Joys of Motherhood, and Mariama Ba's So Long a Letter. These narratives highlight diversity, contextuality, opposition, and metachrony, have a "generative literary function", and anticipate what have now become postcolonial feminist issues and debates. Bringing together feminist writing from a range of postcolonial contexts, the book contributes to a field represented by the critical writings of Francoise Lionnet, Ketu Katrak, and Elleke Boehmer, among others. The deconstructive, cultural approach of the book is mobilised to support an in-depth literary analysis which focuses on female oppression, difference, voice, and agency. Questions of what it means to be "a woman" and to be "postcolonial" are read as central debates which emphasise "multi-vocal and multi-focal" female narratives and perspectives. That is, they highlight the temporal, as well as cross-cultural links and implications of the selected narratives, which give the project a kind of positive complexity and linkage. Above all, the analysis of several unconventional modes and (physical/imaginative) spaces of female resistance, such as prison, widow confinement, and madness, yields some surprising results that are sustained by a close reading of the texts which are not only attentive to questions of genre, structure, imagery and narrative endings, but also oppositional, instructive and reconstructive.

Review
"This is an ambitious and innovative piece of scholarship which takes a number of core feminist fictional writings from a range of early postcolonial contexts and subjects them to a series of critical re-readings which demonstrate diversity and metachrony. These readings have a generative function and, it is argued, anticipate in their complex representation of women in subordinated positions in the developing world later postcolonial feminist paradigms. [...] Given that many of the themes of the book constitute the living reality for some women in a number of societies, this work represents a timely intervention, not just at the level of literary scholarship and cultural analysis, but also as part of an understanding of the politics of gender discrimination and oppression and as a resource for the development of agency and resistance. As such, it deserves to be widely read and should have an essential place on the curriculum of every university." --Roger Bromley, University of Nottingham

A superficial book about a non-issue
By Robert Duke
I think this book got published because of the Zuckerberg connection. I would have been interested in the author's perspective if she had something serious to say, but it came across to this reader as me, me, me. There was a failed attempt to wrap "all about me" in a respectable and socially useful guise of advice about living in the dot com world. It fell flat with me even though I persisted too long in trying to find something redemptive about the story.

Insightful, Relevant, but Somehow Kind of Self-Centered...
By QueenBeeBooks
If I could give 3 1/2 stars, that'd be a more accurate rating!

Mark Zuckerberg's sister is an author and media mogul in her own right. This is her first adult book (she's also published a children's book called Dot). The introductory (and mostly autobiographical) part of Dot Complicated was a little bland (and sometimes melodramatic), but as Zuckerberg moves onto Internet etiquette and commentary on our digital age, the book picks up speed. It's easy to read and relevant to us all. Despite the fact that Zuckerberg repeats over and over again that this book is for US, it seems a little self-centered at times.

Zuckerberg's goal to help people utilize and take advantage of our new technologies is a noble one, but I feel like it's a little overblown: "When explained properly, in a relatable, approachable way, it [tech] can be amazing and life changing." It's almost as if 'tech' is a new religion, promising a new world of redemption and self-control. I don't believe teaching people about what NOT to post on Facebook is a major philanthropic effort. Nevertheless, the book is full of insightful anecdotes and lessons: "I reached a point when rather than owning a computer, a phone, and a tablet, those devices were owning me...I had forgotten how to just unplug and enjoy the company of those around me. I had forgotten how to be present in the moment."

Honestly, I haven't thought too much about online etiquette, whether I should be posting what I'm posting, or how what I post affects others. Perhaps I should.

Some quotes that stuck out to me:

"A world where every object is a screen means a world of endless access to information, but it also means a world where we risk jeopardizing our relationships with loved ones if we don't look up from that screen from time to time."

"...FOMO, which stands for 'fear of missing out.' FOMO refers to the feelings of jealousy and inadequacy experienced upon seeing the impossibly awesome lives of your friends."

"Technology has completely changed all aspects of dating and romantic relationships. Countless apps and websites help people find potential mates to consider. Texting, video chatting, and social networks have created a whole new set of rules for initial courting and the early stages of relationships."

"Giving everyone a megaphone tends to create a society that favors the loud and self-absorbed. Just because a lot of people are talking all at once doesn't mean anything valuable is being said."

I received this book from a Good Reads giveaway.

Waste of time.
By Penina Sagadiev
This fell WAY short of my expectations. The book was slow and tedious for a good part with name dropping and a level of detail that served no purpose but to make her sound important (and push her liberal agenda). Don't bother.

The Jazz of Physics: The Secret Link Between Music and the Structure of the Universe, by Stephon Alexander

More than fifty years ago, John Coltrane drew the twelve musical notes in a circle and connected them by straight lines, forming a five-pointed star. Inspired by Einstein, Coltrane put physics and geometry at the core of his music.

Physicist and jazz musician Stephon Alexander follows suit, using jazz to answer physics' most vexing questions about the past and future of the universe. Following the great minds that first drew the links between music and physics-a list including Pythagoras, Kepler, Newton, Einstein, and Rakim-The Jazz of Physics reveals that the ancient poetic idea of the Music of the Spheres," taken seriously, clarifies confounding issues in physics.

The Jazz of Physics will fascinate and inspire anyone interested in the mysteries of our universe, music, and life itself.

Review
"At first glance, physics and music may not seem the most obvious of bedfellows, but these seemingly disparate fields have much in common. Part-time saxophonist and full-time theoretical cosmologist Stephon Alexander is especially well placed to comment on both and link the two together. Indeed, his book promises to reveal 'the secret link between music and the structure of the universe.' Interwoven with solid physics and personal anecdotes, the book does an admirable job of bringing together modern jazz and modern physics."
-Physics World's Book of the Year 2016, Shortlist

"I have long been a serious jazz fan and like to think of myself as a budding armchair cosmologist. So I'll forever be grateful to musician/physicist Stephon Alexander, who describes the profound ways in which notes and numbers are connected. Alexander chronicles the great thinkers who have explored these links in the past and shares his own journey in the two fields. He'll help you see how our awe-inspiring universe is on a never-ending, cosmological riff."
-Felix Contreras, NPR, Best Books of 2016

"Marvelous."
-New Scientist

"Music lovers are at high risk of being inspired by this exploration of the connections between music and physics.... Alexander elegantly charts the progress of science from the ancients through Copernicus and Kepler to Einstein (a piano-player) and beyond, making it clear that what we call genius has a lot to do with convention-challenging courage, a trait shared by each age's great musicians as well."
-Keith Blanchard, Wall Street Journal

"In the most engaging chapters of this book - part memoir, part history of science, part physics popularization and part jazz lesson - Dr. Alexander ventures far out onto the cutting edge of modern cosmology, presenting a compelling case for vibration and resonance being at the heart of the physical structure we find around us, from the smallest particle of matter to the largest clusters of galaxies.... His report on the state of research into the structure and history of the universe - his own academic field - makes for compelling reading, as does his life story."
-Dan Tepfer, New York Times

"Music and physics might seem like polar opposites, one having great emotional potency and the other being a cerebral subject of equations, theories and deductions. Both, however, benefit from improvisers - people who stand on the shoulders of giants, taking earlier triumphs and building on them to create something new. For me, analogies like these, which draw parallels between physicists and jazz musicians, are the most fascinating revelations in Stephon Alexander's book The Jazz of Physics.... The book's attempt to bring together modern jazz and modern physics strikes me as admirable.... It is an intriguing comparison, and it certainly seems fresher than drawing analogies between classical music and classical physics.... Time to put on some Coltrane and riff some new research ideas?"
-Trevor Cox, Physics World

"[Alexander] gives an engaging account of his uncertainties and worries as he made his way in the highly competitive world of theoretical physics, seeking to acquire the 'chops' needed to deal with the formidable mathematics of his day job along with those needed to solo on the sax after dark.... Mr. Alexander's rhapsodic excitement is infectious."
-Peter Pesic, Wall Street Journal

"[Alexander's] book, The Jazz of Physics, explores [the] resonance [between science and music] to a depth that far surpasses other works on the same concept."
-New Criterion

"Groundbreaking...[Alexander] He illustrates his points with colorful examples, ranging from the Big Bang to the eye of a galactic hurricane."
-Down Beat

"Using his own life as the baseline, Alexander, a professor of physics at Brown University, sweetly riffs on deep connections between music and cosmology.... Alexander's account of his own rise from humble beginnings to produce contributions to both cosmology and jazz is as interesting as the marvelous connections he posits between jazz and physics."
-Publishers Weekly

"In this loosely autobiographical meditation, Alexander explores resonances between music and physics in Pythagoras' 'music of the spheres,' Albert Einstein's love of music, Coltrane's love of Einstein, and his own ideas as a theoretical physicist and jazz saxophonist. It's a vast, cosmic theme that includes quantum mechanics, superstring theory, the Big Bang, the evolution of galaxies, and the process of scientific theorizing itself.... Alexander's enthusiasm for his subject is infectious."
-Kirkus Reviews

"This book could just as well be called The Joy of Physics because what leaps out from it is Stephon Alexander's delight and curiosity about the cosmos, and the deep pleasure he finds in exploring it. True to the jazz he loves so much, Stephon is an intellectual improviser riffing with ideas and equations. It's a pleasure to witness."
-Brian Eno, artist, composer and producer

"The Jazz of Physics is a cornucopia of music, string theory, and cosmology. Stephon takes his reader on a journey through hip hop, jazz, to new ideas in our understanding of the first moment of the big bang. It is a book filled with passion, joy and insight."
-David Spergel, Charles Young Professor of Astronomy & Department Chair, Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University

"A riveting firsthand account of the power of intuitive and unconscious in the process of scientific discovery. Being both top-notch physicist and jazz musician, Stephon Alexander has a unique voice. Listening to him, you will hear the music of the Universe."
-Edward Frenkel, author of Love and Math

"Stephon Alexander takes us along on his twinned quest to discover the fundamental principles of physics and of jazz performance and composition. He is a great story teller and he paints vivid portraits of the masters of music and science who guide him on his search, which leads to a revelation of a common pattern and symmetry in the universes created by John Coltrane and Albert Einstein. If you spend one evening of your life contemplating the relationship between art and science, spend it with this book."
-Professor Lee Smolin, founding member of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and author of The Trouble with Physics

"Is the universe a musical instrument that plays itself? It is according to Stephon Alexander, a string theorist who shares his journey from a crime ridden junior high school to the upper echelons of physics and jazz. Moving fluidly from T dualities to John Cage, he tells how his two worlds blended together like a stereoscopic vision-a sonic cosmos where Einstein and Coltrane naturally meet, and where intuition and improvisation are as important as technique. Whether he's hanging with Brian Eno or Brian Greene, Alexander never loses sight of the math or the melodies, never condescends to his reader but rather uses his own childlike awe and personal charm to take us into the details of chords and equations. It's impossible to resist following him as he 'solos with the equations of D-branes' on paper napkins in jazz clubs, searching for the eloquent underlying harmonies that brought the universe (and us) into being."
-KC Cole, author of Something Incredibly Wonderful Happens and The Universe and the Teacup: The Mathematics of Truth and Beauty

"Music, physics and mathematics have lived in tune since Pythagoras and Kepler, but Prof. Alexander's book creates a new and powerful resonance, coupling the improvisational world of Jazz to the volatile personality of quantum mechanics, and making the frontiers of cosmology and quantum gravity reverberate like in no other book."
-João Magueijo, Professor of Physics at Imperial College London and author of Faster Than The Speed of Light

"In this very creative work Stephon Alexander leads us through his remarkable journey from jazz musician to theoretical physics, from the music of the spheres to string theory."
-Professor Leon N. Cooper, Laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physics

"Stephon Alexander has written an entertaining and important book about how science is becoming more like improvised music. Young musicians and scientists will find a deeper way to connect with their work in its pages. There is also a message about scientific progress: It isn't just about a sterile quest to make a better equation, but also the struggle to build deeper connections between people and between us and the universe at large."
-Jaron Lanier, author of Who Owns the Future?

Disappointing
By Keith E. Koenigsberg
I'm sorry to report that this book really let me down. The subtitle of this book is "the secret link between music and the structure of the universe" and I was hoping for some good, illuminating analogies. (I teach a course in relativity so I am not coming at this as a total novice) Unfortunately, the author's analogies are strained and forced, and left me with nothing I could use with my own students.

This book is much more of personal narrative of what jazz has meant to the author as a scientist, and what science has meant to the author as a musician, as inspiration and muse going both directions. Fair enough; I have had many of the same inspirations. It contains lots and lots of the first person; stories about his youth, encounters with other musicians and scientists, his journey, and his love for the topics, etc. Also fair enough, and occasionally interesting to me. But his scientific explanations leave a lot out - he often lurches into advanced concepts without sufficient preamble for the beginner. On the other hand his analogies between the two disciplines often come out of left field - "in his song 'Jupiter' one can hear John Coltrane literally channelling Jupiter's moons in his improvisation." At best this comes across as drunken late-night fan-boy-ism, and at worst it can verge on paranoid-schizophrenic ramblings. Coltrane may have been inspired by Einstein, but did he "correctly realized that the expansion [of the universe] is a form of anti-gravity"? Absolutely not. No way.

This sort of thing has been done much more elegantly and inspirationally. I can recommend the classic pulitzer prize winer "Escher, Godel, Bach" by Douglas Hofstader, which uses the music of Bach to illuminate logical, mathematical, and scientific themes. I can also recommend the somewhat more advanced "Quantum Reality" by Nick Herbert which has about the best layman's explanation of wave/particle duality and the Heisenberg Uncertainty principal I have ever encountered, using sound waves. It's not poetry and there is no reference to Jazz, but you might actually gain some understanding of quantum weirdness.

Finally, the most frustrating part of this kind of analysis, is that authors who press and strain analogues between fields, like Alexander has done with Jazz, or like Zukav did with science and Eastern Philosophy in "The Dancing Wu Li Masters", are overlooking a central idea. These analogies expose more about the human brain than about the erstwhile topics at hand. Human beings have finite brains which process the world in a limited set of modes. Saying that Coltrane somehow explains Einstein or vice-versa is in fact a trivial statement of the obvious. As if a computer noticed that "hey, Picasso and Isaac Newton are both expressed in binary code!!" Of course they are, silly, because that's the language your brain speaks.

Inquisitive Minds Will Love it
By Rodney B
Don't be afraid of this book. If you love exploring new ideas, you will love this book. If you like being introduced to some incredible people through biographical vignettes, you will love this book. If like a good story of discovery you will love this book.

I've only finished three chapters, so I can't do a complete review yet. But here are just some of the things that those first three chapters have done for me.

1. They have introduced me to a kid, (the author, Stephon Alexander), whose family is from Trinidad, who grew up in the Bronx with a grandmother who wanted him to become a musician to escape poverty, who went to public schools, who listened to Hip-Hop and Battle Rap and wore dreadlocks, but who is now a theoretical physicist, jazz musician, cosmologist, Ivy-League professor, and someone who knows how to tell a good story.

2. I've learned how understanding magnetism led to a way to describe neural networks; and how that in turn is leading to new approaches for understanding the structure of our Universe.

3. I've been introduced to Small's Jazz Club in New York City. And by going online I have learned about it's fascinating history, the availability online of most performances there since 2007, and the unique and well thought-out revenue sharing model that supports both the musicians and the club.

4. I've learned that a parsec is a unit of measure in cosmology that equals approximately 19 trillion miles. That as recently as 1920 there was serious scientific debate about whether there were any galaxies other than our own in the Universe. And that in 1989 Margaret Geller, the daughter of an X-ray crystallographer, along with John Huchra, mapped out other galaxies that extend for 100 million parsecs. Yes, that is 100 million times 19 trillion miles. The mind boggles.

If you like this taste of what I've experienced you will love the book. I'll write a full review when I'm done, but I am not going to rush it. It is much too good a story, with far too much thought-provoking substance to hurry through it without savoring.

Loved every part of this unique book
By D. A. J.
I cannot say enough good things about this book. It was quite amazing to follow Dr. Alexander's journey to the world of physics through the lens of jazz. I have read review with people complaining about the book being autobiographical or even jumping subjects. That actually is what makes this book so interesting to read. I learned some new aspects of physics, it helped strengthen other elements of physics I had heard about in the past, and it was a pleasure to read about his journey into physics, starting with the first trip to the museum and seeing a display of Albert Einstein.

I would highly recommend this book to those with a novice based love of physics, those who love both music and science, and as an amazing way to aspire children, teens, and young adults to reach for their goals in their own unique way. I love that his journey was his and not limited to a one way, boring, pre-charted road.
