Another wonderful Sarah Mayberry romance
By Reviewer Aus
You know Sarah Mayberry's a good writer when she makes me - someone who seriously dislikes babies in books- enjoy a book about two people who want babies.
This woman can write anything and I love it. Of course, this one was never going to be my favourite, but it's very good. Yes, both leading characters first and foremost want a baby, but what this story is really about it is how they are disillusioned by life, and how that changes when they meet each other. I feared that children were going to come at the expense of the relationship, but by the end marriage and children had gained equal importance in the minds of both hero and heroine.

I really liked having a slightly older couple, mostly because it made their dilemma so much more believable. Alexandra is thirty-eight going on thirty-nine and panics when she runs into the ex she left because he refused to have children - to discover he's had a baby with another woman. She realises that even if she meets someone now it's going to be a good long while before the topic of children can even be brought up; and by then it might be too late. Ethan is in his early forties and pretty much wants the same things, but his ex-wife took all that away from him.

Sarah Mayberry has this way of making me all choked up. She finds a way of taking something that could be mundane in the hands of another writer and making it something gut-wrenching and special. Alex's horrible realisation she might be too late for the things she'd always hoped for in life was a big emotional thing. I didn't need to feel the way she did to get how devastating it was for her. Same goes for Ethan.

On the subject of Ethan, he was definitely a different kind of man to most romance novel heroes. He was such a regular guy. Sure, he was a pretty wealthy career man, but in the end the things he wanted out of life were straightforward, and he'd had them all taken from him. How nice for a category romance hero to be someone who simply wanted a wife he loved and a couple of kids. No exterior dramas or anything; just a man who'd thought his life was heading in the right direction, and who then had the rug pulled out from under him.

Perhaps the most memorable scene for me was when Ethan approached Alex about the possibility of being the father of her child. It's the small things that make Mayberry a better writer than most others, and in this scene it was the way he nearly knocked over his coffee, and the colour in his face that showed his anxiety that made me feel for him, and love him a little bit.

Of course it would be really nice if these books could be published without first being Americanised. The story is set in Melbourne, Australia, after all. But alas, publishers have no faith in their readers understanding a few differences in speech and spelling here and there...

I'm getting a little worried because I've ploughed through Sarah Mayberry's books like an obsessed stalker, and I've almost run out!

Lovely...
By RVAbooklover
Lovely is the best word I can come up with to describe this book. Ethan is my favorite kind of hero - smart, funny, a bit damaged and most importantly, has a big, loving heart. Alex is my favorite kind of heroine - smart, funny, self sufficient who wants to love and be loved. I also like the setup - They are colleagues and have worked and played raquetball together for a few years. Both find the other attractive, but were not willing to risk their friendship or working relationship by acting on that attraction. Obviously, I was predestined to love this book, but even so, I was just blown away by the depth of The Best Laid Plans.

Normally, I avoid "baby" books like the plague. Most of them seem so contrived to me, I just can't get past the improbability of the set up. This one, though, had none of that. Alex is 38, and left her longtime lover 18 months ago because he would not agree to have a child. On her way to meet Ethan for their weekly raquetball match, she sees her ex on the street one day, wrestling with a stroller. She is shocked, angry, hurt beyond words...Here is where Sarah Mayberry shines. She is so very good at the details of emotion. I felt Alex's pain, I hurt for her. She breaks down in front of Ethan, horrified beyond words at her loss of control. Alex decides to look into artificial insemination, Ethan finds out, and offers to be her donor.

Ethan is still recovering from a divorce 5 years past. His betrayal at the hands of his ex-wife was brutal and he was completely blindsided by her request for a divorce. He lost his ability to trust, and is determined never to marry again. He thought that meant that his longing for children was forever shelved, but Alex's situation seems like a second chance to be a dad. Seeing him interact with his young nephews makes his longing for a child of his own palpable. He's a good, solid guy. He is a little lost, a little lonely and still trying to find his feet after the breakup of his marriage.

When Ethan and Alex get together to discuss the possibility of creating a child together, she has a 2 page list of questions. He has a 3 page list, but allows that his handwriting is messier. Bless their hearts, they are so earnest and sincere in their desire to have a child. Both of them want the picket fence dream, but feel like it is completely out of reach. That yearning for love, for a home, for a child comes through so clearly, my heart hurt for them both.

The day before Alex and Ethan are to go to the clinic for the insemination, Ethan spots a couple who are expecting. They are glowing with love, feeling their baby move beneath their hands. Ethan starts having second thoughts, and Alex is, too. Again, the writing in this scene is incredibly descriptive and moving.

Ethan can't get past his ex-wife's betrayal, and his fear of being fooled again. Alex is unwilling to spend any more of her life waiting on things that may never be. Ethan is suffering, wanting to take the leap but so bogged down by his insecurity that he just can't. Alex decides to move on with her plan to find a loving relationship via dating services. When Ethan finds out Alex has a date, he about goes over the edge. A cleansing talk with his brother helps him find his courage to try again. Again, the writing...I was sobbing, I don't mind telling you.

Everything in this book worked for me. I didn't want more of anything, or less of anything. The level of detail, background and emotion was stellar. Ethan and Alex captured me from the first page, and I read The Best Laid Plans in one sitting. Incredibly moving in some scenes, very funny in others, it was like seeing a slice of their lives play out. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this, and I will be reading it again and again. I've read other good books by Ms. Mayberry, but this was by far my favorite.

I want to be heroine when I grow up
By 30something
I cannot say enough good things about this book. I had already fallen in love with Sarah Mayberry when I read "Anything for You" and The Best Laid Plans just increased my fan status. This is not a light romance, but the way SM handled both the hero and heroine's drama was superb.

Alex is a strong, intelligent, beautiful lawyer who has managed to conquer everything, except what she really wants: a family. It was a real pleasure to watch as SM peels Alex's layers one by one, exposing her doubts and vulnerability, and how, despite all the hard time she has been given, she never loses hope or changes her values. She remains honest to her heart and dreams and refuses to be shortchanged. This is one heroine I was proud of and who deserved nothing less than a wonderful HEA.

And she got it, because Ethan, the hero, was equally delightful and deserving. You can feel how much he cares and admires the heroine right from the beginning, and how those feelings grow throughout the book and give him the courage and will to overcome his fears. His character development was beautifully done.

The emotional connection between the hero and the heroine felt true and strong - helped, I think, by the fact they have been friends for years -, and I was sincerely happy for them at the end. This may sound silly, because as a romance reader it is obvious that I like happy endings, but it is not every day that you find a book that gets you so emotionally involved that you actually care about what happens to the characters as if they were family. Well this one did it for me, and I loved every step of the way.
