The truth is, this is a book for adults with a dark sense of humor and an appreciation of old-school faerie tales.
There are three separate endings to the book. Depending on where you stop, you are left with an entirely different story. One ending is sweet, another is horrible. The last one is the true ending, the one with teeth in it.
The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle is a dark twist on the classic children's picture-book. I think of it as Calvin and Hobbes meets Coraline, with some Edward Gorey mixed in.

As in all good storybooks, in this one there was once a princess. She and her stalwart bear, Mr. Whiffle, live in a marzipan castle and have adventures. All is happy and cheerful except, of course, for the monster living under her bed. Sounds like a bedtime story, to be sure, but that’s only its superficial veneer. Toss in the odd bit of violence and a smidgen of stuffed-animal rebellion, and we are faced with a different sort of book. Rothfuss and Taylor share a wonderfully wicked sense of humor. The inclusion of three successive ending points, each darker in nature than its predecessor, allows the faint of heart the chance to stop, but really, the payoff for hanging on to the final ending is too good to miss. Taylor’s art is gleefully subversive while maintaining an appropriate sweetness without becoming overly precious. Fans of the classic cartooning of Calvin and Hobbes and Loony Toons will be pleased by this little gem in which children’s picture-book format expresses not-for-kids attitudes. --Tina Coleman

Clever pacing and beautiful illustration.

I love Patrick Rothfuss's writing. This is definitely a different voice from King Killer Chronicle but matches his personality and wit perfectly. I have seen other's say that this is a book about children, but not for children. I don't see that. I think the "monster under the bed" aspects are great and when i was a kid we were allowed to enjoy a little bit of scary or gory. I think most kids would have fun with this book, but i don't have children so read it first and decide for yourself. The illustration is superb and perfectly matched to the cute and not-so-cute aspects of this story.

Bedtime story in the Grimm fashion

I didn't know exactly what to expect out of this book. I'd read the synopsis, read Pat's blogs concerning it, was looking forward to it, but still didn't have a concrete idea of what it would be exactly. That said, I'm SO happy I purchased it. Not only is it a fun read, it's got some serious bite. This is a coffee table book for me. I'm a single adult, with single adult friends, and not only is this something that we all will enjoy, but we'll reference it to each other over the years as a shared awesome experience.
The Princess and Mr Wiffle may not be for everyone, but it's definitely for me.

I want a copy my the kids come first

Patrick Rothfuss knows how to write a fun and deep kids book. It is dark and thus some kids love the details and hidden meanings while others cry. This is a book that requires several readings to catch everything in the word play and pictures. Great coffee table book too.
