Unbelievably unprofessional

I can not believe, based on how much I needed to spend on this book, that many of the definitions cited in the chapters are from wikipedia. Wikipedia! I can't name a single professor who would accept that on a paper, but somehow, that's perfectly acceptable in the textbook publishing world. And some of the sources aren't even cited at all! And don't get me started on the perspective bias that is in there. One incident of a man who murdered five people was insinuated to be due to a miscommunication/bad persuasion issue, but when I found information outside of the book on the incident, there was no such causation mentioned...and the author had the death count off.

Bottom-line is, although there is certainly useful information in here, but the book is constructed rather poorly, and based upon that alone, it's incredibly hard to trust the text. Certainly not worth the money spent.

Complete waste of time...

The author is so very opinionated about politics that reading it is difficult. In addition the entire book is mostly on how to be a good listener, what to listen for, etc. Only the last few chapters have any reference to how to persuade people and it's very unremarkable information. Suggested my university drop this book from their line-up.

Where is the editor?

This book is, as stated in another review, incredibly unprofessional. If I were to present this book as my written work to one of my English professors, they would laugh me off campus for making a claim founded in Wikipedia and then supporting it with more Wikipedia articles. This is not to mention the grammatical and syntax disasters throughout the book. On page 9, the author defines advocacy according to Wikipedia and then says, "Propaganda is a related word that we hear quite often." Who is 'we'? Then, he grounds that claim in Wikipedia! On the same page, he makes reference to two movies that I have never heard of and cites them without documentation telling me how I can find them to ground his argument. Someone clearly needs an APA style manual!

I think that when discussing technology in this book, since it is the 12th edition, they could have cut out 90% of technological media definitions. I feel like he is undermining the reader in telling what these devices are used for.

The style of writing in this text is relatively elementary. The author is constantly opening sections of the texts by telling us what the previous section discussed and what we are going to learn in another chapter.

The author slaps us in the face on page 17 by writing a paragraph beginning, " College students today are urged to take more core subjects and courses in computer technology." He then ends that same paragraph with, " Students are urged to take more core subjects and courses in computer technology at college." For a published text with several editions and editors, I am greatly disappointed in the redundancy and lack of argumentative support for claims.

In chapter 6, the author discuses syntax, adverbs and sentence structure. I feel greatly let down as an English major. You cant discuss half of English sentence structure and then throw in only the parts you feel like, unless you want to confuse someone. But if the person reading the text were smart enough to figure out this chapter, then they feel offended by the repetition throughout the book.

About the Author
Gerald Corey is Professor Emeritus of Human Services and Counseling at California State University at Fullerton. He received his doctorate in counseling from the University of Southern California. He is a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology; a licensed psychologist; and a National Certified Counselor. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 17, Counseling Psychology; and Division 49, Group Psychotherapy); a Fellow of the American Counseling Association; and a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Both Jerry and Marianne Corey received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011, and both also received the Eminent Career Award from ASGW in 2001. Dr. Corey was given the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from California State University at Fullerton in 1991. He regularly teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in group counseling and ethics in counseling. He is the author or coauthor of 15 textbooks in counseling currently in print, along with more than 60 journal articles and book chapters. In the past 40 years Jerry and Marianne Corey have conducted group counseling training workshops for mental health professionals at many universities in the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England, and Ireland.

I've read a couple of Group counseling textbooks and this is my favorite. I was upset with the price but Corey's writing is excellent, his in depth explanation of the different modalities was perfect and I especially appreciated the examples included. This will stay on my reference bookshelf for future use.

great group work book

Bought this for a course in my MSW program. I enjoyed the class and we really used the book from front to back. This book has a lot of usuful information if you are looking to start running groups or working with clients in your practicum. I plan on keeping this text and not selling it back because of all the information that you can gain from this book. Im glad that I took the course because of this book!.

A quality book from Fine Woodworking. There are a range of really nice designs and projects in this book. The instructions are not completely thorough, so this book is probably not for the beginner, you definitely need a certain amount of knowledge to complete the projects as described, but combined with other woodworking books, this is a great addition to my collection.

Problem solver of so-called incurable states and diseases, the environment, climate change, and the federal budget deficit

A very short book and an excellent introduction to Dr. Campbell's other important books. I have read all of them and will read anything this excellent and very knowledgeable epidemiologist writes. I have personal experience as well. Eating his recommended way, I have gone from 235 pounds on a 5 ft 1 in frame to 121 pounds. I had been testing prediabetic for years and now my blood sugar and other values are completely normal. I stride around like a teenager whereas before I had x-ray verified need for replacement of both hips, both knees, and both ankles. I had severe osteoarthritis such that each step was very painful. I now work all day on my feet and have no pain at all. I have saved Medicare (i.e., US taxpayers) at $50,000/per joint replacement a whole lot of money. It is also predicted that at the current rate that these types of degenerative "old-age" problems are now occurring much younger such that it will take all of the gross national production to just pay for this so-called "health" care. We all need nutrition care and it is Dr. Campell's nutrition, not the government-subsidized nutrition of meat, diary, and grain.

T. Colin Campbell, PhD is one of the most undiscovered researchers of the food we eat and how it impacts our lives and lifespan. His work on the book "The China Study" is unparalled in contribution to "food as a medicine and health and longivity. Read both and you'll discover how you are manitulated by the food industry. Scary stuff...but gives you to power to impact you life in a positive reasonable, sensible way. This book is worth the read...just be ready to be shocked.

Far too short and is missing any substantive argument against low carb! Skip it.

I was very disappointed in this book by Colin Campbell. First, let me say that I read and liked "The China Study" (Campbell), "The Starch Solution" (McDougall), "How Not to Die" (Gregor), and "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" (Esselstyn). I have been eating Whole Foods Plant Based for nearly a year and have lost over 90 pounds and feel great. So I'm a convert to this way of life.

However, this book is misleading, a huge missed opportunity, and a rip-off, in my opinion. First, the book is tiny. I've attached a picture of the physical book, which is smaller than a normal book in dimensions and extremely thin on top of that. Yet it's priced, in paperback and kindle, like a regular book. I actually listened to the audio book, which was astonishingly short, only a few hours. More important: is its failed promise and missed opportunity.

I listened to this book on the way to a family reunion, hoping to get some talking points. I did low carb for about six years (I'd always lose 20 pounds and then just sit there and eventually go off, gain it back, repeat ad nauseum). Nearly all my family is on low carb and they think it's the healthiest way of eating. So I was hoping for some evidence to convince them otherwise. You won't find it here.

Essentially what this is is Campbell's refuting (ie ranting) against "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. As a top US researcher who was involved in many of the findings and committees that Taubes quotes and/or denigrates, I can understand Campbell wanting to set the record straight. Furthermore, I'd read "Good Calories, Bad Calories" years ago, and it's very convincing. I was glad to see a rebuttal made and found Campbell's points interesting and good to know, though they did come off as pretty biased.

Essentially the argument Taubes makes is that "the government recommended low fat, so everyone did that for years and it only made us fatter and sicker". As Campbell points out, very few people truly ATE low fat at that time, despite government recommendations. And what the government actually suggested (which was a compromise) was 30% fat, which is still "high", according to Campbell. Furthermore, studies that Taubes quotes that compare "low fat" to "low carb" aren't truly "low fat" (like 30%) so the results are meaningless. And the carbs Taubes villifies are refined carbs (extracted sugars and starches), not whole grain complex carbs. Next, Campbell has a brief chapter debunking the Paleo idea. In sum: there's little proof ancient man was primarily meat-based. It's more likely our ancestors ate like chimps do today.

That's all well and good so far, but that's where this tiny book ends. There is so much missing that should be in a book called "Low Carb Fraud". If I handed this book to a loved one, it would come across as a biased rant. There's no ACTUAL EVIDENCE here, which is what I needed.

1. Campbell says problem carbs are refined carbs, like sugar. Complex carbs like those found in whole grains are very healthy. But he throws that out there and then never presents any arguments or evidence to support this. At all. Not even anecdotal, like "the Mayans ate sweet potatoes and the healthiest Chinese consume large quantities of rice". There is just nothing to support this POV in this book.
2. Consuming such large amounts of animal protein and fat are unhealthy. This, too, is passed over as a given. Again, no evidence is presented whatsoever to support this claim. How is this convincing to anyone? It's almost a grumbled aside.
3. Low fat. Campbell repeatedly complains that TRUE "low fat" is 10% of calories not the 30% of calories most studies use as their standard, therefore those studies are meaningless. Okay. So then how does a 10% fat diet fare? Is there any evidence that it's a good thing? Why do we need to go that low? What's wrong with fat exactly? No explanation is given. This is not addressed at all!
4. Well then, what about people who have actually done low carb for long periods? Any evidence, or even anecdotal stories, about its dangers? What's so bad about it exactly? Nope. Nothing.

Excuse me!?? I'm sorry. I thought this book was actually going to make an argument against low carb eating. Apparently not.

I realize that Campbell, and others writers, have written on these topics, but I'm not going to hand someone an entire library. This material should have been summarized and presented in a clear, conclusive way in this book, perhaps if only in an effort to make it book length. We NEED a book that fully addresses and clears the "low carb" question once and for all, something that will at least make low carbers think hard. Something, I dare say, like Taubes "Good Calories, Bad Calories". In that sense, Taubes has trounced Campbell soundly.

Finally, to the business and marketing folks and Campbell himself. This feels like a lecture Campbell gave that was hastily put into book form to make money off the WFPB hype. Next time, maybe try making it an actual book.

In Cry Liberty, Hoffer provides a deeply researched and finely nuanced narrative of the Stono River conflict, offering uncomfortable insights into American slavery. In particular, he draws on new sources to reexamine this one dramatic day. According to conventional wisdom, recently imported African slaves-warriors in spirit and training-learned of an impending war between England and Spain. Seeking freedom from Spanish authorities, the argument runs, they launched a well-planned uprising in order to escape to Florida. But Hoffer has mined legislative and legal records, land surveys, and first-hand accounts to identify precisely where the fighting began, trace the paths taken by rebels and militia, and offer a new explanation of its causes. Far from a noble, well-crafted revolt, he reveals, the slaves were simply breaking into a store to take what they thought was their due, and chance events put them on a path no participant had originally intended. The truth is a far less heroic, but far more of a human tragedy.

Richly researched, crisply told, and unflinchingly honest, this book uncovers the grim truth about the violent wages of slavery and sheds light on why North America had so few slave rebellions.

A research (inquest) into the probable events of slave activity which carried onward till the Civil War. The 150th anniversary of that war is a great time to look at this slave conflict. "Cry Liberty" covers much slave activity in early 18th century near Charles Town (Charleston),SC. The author has done an intellectual work in gathering research and visiting (photos in book) the area to attempt to make a determination if the Stono River slave rebellion was planned or an chance accident. As an unbiased writer, he looks between the previously written lines, the culture, Colonial needs, status of people, misinformation, economics of the area, fear, religion, politics, and even land surveys. So well researched and footnoted that reading more on this "rebellion" seems needless. It's not a textbook, but it is solid nonfiction, worthy of an educated look.

The uprising of 1739 was almost silenced for 2 3/4 centuries. It is a story worth reading. Slave activity was little different then than in 1861 when, let's face it, slavery divided America, north to south. Was Stono really a prequel to that slavery rebellion? Or was it simply a case of "chattel stampede?"

PROLOGUE: Maps and a look at the Shono/Charles Town area.
Chapters:
1 AT HUTCHENSON'S STORE- The revolt's beginning place and its likely composition.
2 INHUMAN BONDAGE- Slaves by law, creation, color, economic need as rice field labor. Slaves were mobile.
3TERROR IN THE NIGHT- Ditch digging slaves kill whites (23 total in the end) but began in a search for food and drink. Death & mayhem, even slave against slave. Like white vs white in Civil War.
4 ON PON PON ROAD- The road was slave constructed in 1739. Weary slaves marched, Florida freedom bound, rested, the beginning to their end. Sever times black deaths compared to white.
5 NEVER FORGET- "But the memory of Stono among the whites was quickly recast in the face of the necessities of the colonial economy."--author Hoffer. Slavery & blood had left its mark.
EPILOGUE: The author wraps it up well.

Well Documented bit of History on the Low Country

Let me say I was attracted to this book for two reasons; I am an amateur history buff and I happen to live very close to where the events in the story occurred.

The author made a very enjoyably read story unfold without stating in the typical dogmatic fashion of many educators that he/she has some new clues without substantiating or documenting the reason for their position. The author is a professor at the University of Georgia and has written several other books and many articles on the similar time frame in US history. The author also avoided the one thing in the book he notes many others do, which record a particular fact and then work backward to try to come out with a definite scenario to explain the incident. The author gives several reasons for how things may actually have occurred without being dogmatic about his conclusions. The book was extensively documented throughout with notes and references at the bottom of each page to which they referred. Let me say this is a rather small book in both physical dimensions and also length [173pp] and were it a work of fiction, I would certainly rank it a novella rather than a novel. The upside of that is that it can be easily read in one long or two short readings.

The author sets the tone for his work in the opening paragraph: "The only large scale rebellion in British North America occurred on a single day, from very early Sunday morning to late afternoon, on September 9, 1739. The setting was similarly limited - a store, a bridge, nearby plantations, and a road along the North Branch of the Stono River known as Pon Pon at the time but [now known as US-17 or alternatively Savannah Hwy when heading south from Charleston and conversely called Charleston Hwy when heading north from Savannah].

The author included some obvious facts known to any amateur history buffs as "Without slaves, Carolina would never have been profitable enough to merit colonization." Yet he also explained many interesting observations as "To show deference to whites, ...slave speech was often slowed or mumbled, or spoken with a glance to the side or down. This was a defense mechanism the enslaved learned in Africa, where it was a sign of respect for young people to avoid meeting the gaze of their elders." He also noted that the sex ratio in the late 1730's of slaves was 1.7 males for each female, which made females far more valuable to male slaves but not necessarily to slave owners who felt they couldn't produce as much heavy work as males. This along with a myriad of other minor facts is what made the book interesting and hard to put down. I heartily recommend this book.

This was a very interesting read for a history student as it really does try to create a narrative on an event we know little about. It is a defining work whose insights are worth the read but its particular type of historical narrative is worthy of note and study in itself.

The book arrived in good condition and on time.
