A Book for Advanced Practitioners

This book (The Mahalanobis-Taguchi Strategy) describes the best multi-dimensional database system that exists today. This system takes a database consisting of many variables used to describe a certain `reference population', and converts it into just one variable called MD (the Mahalanobis Distance). The value of MD tells us whether a particular member of a population either belongs to the reference population, or whether that particular member is a member of some other population. Both `populations' are defined by the user.

[A Note: I used this strategy on a large group of buyers who were `loyal' to my client's international product - and also on a large group of buyers of the same type of product who were `disloyal' to my client's international product (meaning that they regularly purchased a competitor's brand). The Mahalanobis-Taguchi Strategy reliably and effectively sorted members of the two groups. Furthermore, MTS (as I refer to it) was capable of identifying several dozen variables which were the keys to separating the two groups. As a matter of fact, the MD values for the disloyal group members generally disclosed the `degree' of disloyalty. Another benefit: the results of the MTS experiment were used to re-vamp and develop an entirely new (and far more effective) marketing strategy for this multi-national corporation.]

A reader of this book will soon learn that it is really an `advanced' treatment of the subject - not necessarily meant for an MTS novice. For example, besides MTS, the authors introduce an alternative method which they call MTGS (for "Mahalanobis-Taguchi Gram-Schmidt"), which they say `sometimes' is advantageous to employ, instead of MTS alone. Another value of this book is that it contains arguments primarily against using the older methods of multivariate analysis (or pattern recognition) - including methods like Principal Component Analysis, Discrimination and Classification Method, Multiple Regression Analysis, Stepwise Regression, Test of Additional Information (Rao's Test), Multivariate Control Charts and Artificial Neural Networks.

Alas! A beginner or novice can receive some benefits from reading this book - like hearing the overall description of MTS, and like moving through several international case studies. However, the book "really" does not tell the reader the secrets of `how' to apply MTS to a particular multi-variable database problem, or how to design an MTS experiment. Even the MTS experiments have trouble, for example, in designing appropriate questionnaires for an MTS marketing experiment - questions in such questionnaires demand that the developers have not only an excellent understanding of the product or service involved, but also a fairly deep understanding of human psychology, coupled with the ability to translated psychological characteristics into meaningful questions (I only know of one advertising agency in the world who can do this).

Based upon the contents of this book (and a companion book), I have very effectively applied MTS to several diverse areas, where pattern-recognition was the objective. These included the following:

* Marketing - Here we examined the market for a huge product used by mothers for young children. MTS was able to decisively discriminate between mothers who regularly purchased one brand, from mothers who purchased another brand. Furthermore, we identified several dozen chief characteristics of both groups of mothers. The results were invaluable for future marketing and advertising campaigns.

* Loyalty Programs - Here we were able to determine the key variables responsible for keeping current customers loyal, as well as the variables which were important to competitors' loyalty programs. MTS did this by considering not only the numerical values of the variables, but by considering their correlation structures as well.

* The Golf Swing - We applied MTS to the golf swing of excellent golfers and to beginning golfers, determining which biomechanical variables contributed to a golfer's ability to A) hit the ball straight towards the intended target, every time, B) maximize the range of each ball, without compromising down-range, side-to-side dispersion. This experiment took only two hours to conduct. We employed a system which measured biomechanics variables at every point in the swing, and we measured over 40 ball characteristics from impact all the way to the ball-landing point. The result was a vastly improved swing (more consistent, significantly reduced down-range side-to-side dispersion, and longer range).

* Equities Trading - We applied MTS to develop highly reliable buy and sell indicators. Five dozen variables were initially considered, but we were able to reduce the number of variables to a much smaller number. The system works well.

Overall, this system not only helped me to better-apply MTS to various pattern-recognition systems - it also served as an `idea kernel' for applying MTS to a host of other application areas. The book is definitely not for everyone, but it is a real gem.

PS: I would disagree with some of the comments on the back cover of this book: "The Mahalanobis--Taguchi Strategy: A Pattern Technology System is an essential book for engineers, designers, and statistical quality experts and programmers in the fields of engineering and computer science, as well as researchers in finance, medicine, statistics, and general science." Why? Because it is missing an all-important ingredient: the `How To', written in a simple way which engineers, designers and statistical quality experts and programmers can readily grasp. Perhaps another book will come along that does this.

If you want to learn how to use Mahalanobis Taguchi System (MTS) to solve real case problems and design robust maltivariate systems using orthogonal arrays, buy this book. It is easy to understand to read and to follow the content. The case studies gives a clear idea how to use MTS and Robust Engineering and the potential of both extracting the required information from many variables efficiently. You learn how to use MTS for inspection, diagnosis systems. But you can develop your own ideas e.g. for software testing and screening purposes etc.

This is a seminal work in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Following an initial period of enthusiasm, the field encountered a period of frustration and disrepute. Minksy and Papert's 1969 book summed up this general feeling of frustration among researchers by demonstrating the representational limitations of Perceptrons (used in neural networks). Their arguments were very influential in the field and accepted by most without further analysis.
I found this book to be generally easy to read. Despite being written in 1969, it is still very timely.

In 1958, Cornell psychologist Frank Rosenblatt proposed the 'perceptron', one of the first neural networks to become widely known. A retina sensory layer projected to an association layer made up of threshold logic units which in turn connected to the third layer, the response layer. If two groups of patterns are linearly separable then the perceptron network works well in learning to classify them in separate classes. In this reference, Minsky and Papert show that assuming a diameter-limited sensory retina, a perceptron network could not always compute connectedness, ie, determining if a line figure is one connected line or two separate lines. Extrapolating the conclusions of this reference to other sorts of neural networks was a big setback to the field at the time of this reference. However, it was subsequently shown that having an additional 'hidden' layer in the neural network overcame many of the limitations. This reference figures so prominently in the field of neural networks, and is often referred to in modern works. But of even greater significance, the history of the perceptron demonstrates the complexity of analyzing neural networks. Before this reference, artificial neural networks were considered terrific, after this reference limited, and then in the 1980s terrific again. But at the time of this writing, it is realized that despite physiological plausibility, artificial neural networks do not scale well to large or complex problems that brains can easily handle, and artificial neural networks as we know them may actually be not so terrific.

This collection of never-before-published letters traces the history of the transfer of the Rockefeller fortune over the course of fifty years. It illustrates how the endowment was bestowed from Senior to Junior with respect, sound advice, and with a mutual trust between father and son. The letters also reveal far more than the business side of entrusting the Rockefeller fortune to the younger generation. The misives are filled with news of family matters and personal wishes constituting a record of the Rockefeller family values which, in turn, sponsored the philantrophies of Junior. Outlined in these letters is the conception for the Rockefeller Foundation, the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, and the General Education Board. Later would follow the realization of the Fort Tryon Park, the Rockefeller Center, Riverside Church, and the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg. Junior's holdings peaked in 1928 at 5 million and his dedication to public parks, and institutions around the world absorbed a considerable portion of his wealth. Ernst's introduction reflects on five themes which run continuously throughout the letters: the respect and love among the members of the family, a father's precautions to his maturing son, the son's willingness to accept his father's precepts and examples, the son's conscious assumption of the responsibilities of the bequeathed fortune, and overriding faith in a benevolent God. These themes continually come together to form the outline of a philosophy of life behind the Rockefeller legacy, as when Senior writes: I am indeed blessed beyond measure in having a son whom I can trust to do this most particular and most important work. Go carefully. Be conservative. Be sure you are right- and then do not be afraid to give out, as your heart prompts you, and as the Lord inspires you.

FATHER LOVES SON VERY MUCH

I have read the CHINESE TRANSLATION of the J.D.ROCKEFELLER's Letters to Jr. I am still waiting for the ORIGINAL ENGLISH VERSION of Rockefeller's
Letters to Jr. I am very touched by J.D., such a GREAT FATHER with so
much LOVE for HIS SON J.D.Jr.

The letters are full of teachings and sharing about experiences in LIFE,
from J.D.'s humble beginning as a $5/week book-keeper in CHICAGO area, I
believe or it was in CLEVELAND.(Pardon me, I am not AMERICAN).J.D.'s
aspirations and determination to succeed in business began with his
HARD WORK, THRIFT, DETERMINATIONS, HUMBLE, a lots of great virtues in the
past which today young people in HK/CHINA & USA have forgotten. You see
the trouble in financial tsunami which we are facing today are the results
of forgetting the virtues of THRIFT & HARDWORK. In J.D.'s letters to
Jr there were many repetition of such GREAT VIRTUES, GREAT IDEAS and
HARDWORK as well as J.D.'s business experiences in facing adversity.

I admire J.D.ROCKEFELLER Sr. not because he was a very RICH MAN, but he
was indeed a man very RICH in SPIRIT. Everything he did he had a humble
goal of fulfilling the WILL of GOD, FOR THE GREATER GLORY of GOD in order
to serve MANKIND. No wonder, he was so successful, his CHILDREN are also
GREAT in the HISTORY of AMERICA. Indeed, I am IMPRESSED!!! USA is a GREAT
COUNTRY to have GREAT PERSON such as Mr.J.D.ROCKEFELLER Sr.

It is not the same book in Chinese Version

I also read Chinese Version " Rockefeller's 38 letters to his son". I looked for English Version.
I read Stephen Young comments " Dear Father, Dear Son" before I bought. But when I received, I found it is not same book as Chinese Verson. It is a little of misleading. So for those people who has read Chinese verson, looking for English verson, has to be careful. It is not the same book!
I am not saying " Dear Father, Dear Son" is not good, but it could be compared with " Rockefeller's 38 letters to his son". I do not know where I can find that book in English, I've searched everwhere.

About the Author
Sri Swami Satchidananda was one of the first Yoga masters to bring the classical Yoga tradition to the West. He taught Yoga postures, meditation, a vegetarian and more compassionate lifestyle to westerners when he was invited to America in 1966 by the iconic pop artist Peter Max. The distinctive teachings he brought with him blend the physical discipline of Yoga, the spiritual philosophy of Vedic literature and the interfaith ideals he pioneered. These techniques and concepts influenced a generation and a spawned Yoga culture that is flourishing today. The organization founded on his teachings, Integral Yoga International, is now a leading institute for Yoga teacher certification. Integral Yoga is the foundation for Dr. Dean Ornish's landmark work in reversing heart disease and Dr. Michael Lerner's noted Commonweal Cancer Help program. Sri Swami Satchidananda is the author of many books on Yoga and is the subject of the 2008 documentary, \"Living Yoga.\"

Excellent book on the philosophy of yoga

This is *the* book to refer to get a proper understanding of the philosophy of Yoga.
I have gone through other books ( B. K. S. Iyengar , Georg Feuerstein , Swami Prabhavananda ) and some audio cassetes on the Yoga Sutras.
This is by far the best book on the subject. The sutras are beautifully explained in layman terms with ample annotations. The sutras in samadhi pada and sadhana pada are covered extensively.
Whenever there was a discrepency in the translation among different authors (such as sutras 18,19,33 of sadhana pada, which have been interpreted very differently) I found the translation and explanation in this book to be most logical, intuitive and complete.

How to tell a good commentary on the Sutras

How to choose a useful commentary on the Sutras? A rule of thumb is to examine the author's take on the first five sutras. These are the ones in which Patanjali defines what Yoga is and in a nutshell points to what the enlightened state is. Authors who have no idea either don't get this, or are not able to explicate it well. Satchidananda is one of the happy few who are able. An illustrative comment is on P7, in reference to Sutra 3: "You are that true Seer. You are not the body or the mind." The thing that makes the Satchidananda commentary reliable is that he never loses sight of that intrinsic point of the first, definitional sutras. Beyond a certain cultural context, Satchidananda does not abandon "no-body and no-mind" for a moralistic exhortation. He keeps clear sight of the concept-free nature of universal reality.

This version is not as good as the out-of-print The Authentic Yoga Sutras of P Y Deshpande, nor does it have the clarity of Osho's limited commentary - but it is miles ahead of commentaries of some of the more famous names in contemporary Yoga.

Extremely well done but still leaves questions

Swami Satchidananda's book on the Sutras is one of the best for digging into the background and foundations of the Sutras, and his commentary, unlike Iyengar's and most other eastern commentaries, is clear, simple and easy to understand. Yet I finished the book still feeling that I did not fully grasp it. Swami Satchidananda is clearly in touch with the truth that he is illuminating with this book, and it's also clear from the powerful tone of authority with which he writes that he has reached the state of awaking which is the end purpose of the Sutras, but it seems too immersed in the history and culture of Hinduism to be fully appreciated and grasped by a westerm mind conditioned by concepts, ideas and images that are vastly different from the eastern traditions. So the book does not have a deep and profound illuminating impact as has McAfee's book on the sutras - "Beyond the Siddhis". But it is rich in historical information and its tone is true to the purpose of the Sutras. I would recommend it for for all aspiring yogis.

The Football Manager's guide to football management is just what fans of the FM franchise need to combat The boredom until FM16 is released. Iain Macintosh has written a humorous book you don't have to be a fan of The game to enjoy. The section on player roles and the chapter on transfers will be very helpful to those that play the game.

Personally I didn't expect much from a book about Football Manager (even though I'm a fan of both the game and football in general). So imagine my surprise when this turned out to be witty, insightful and really rather well put together.

In fact, this is great read for football fans in general - whether they play Football Manager or not!
